Students Punch Their Ticket to Hollywood
Campus MovieFest premiere recap

Campus MovieFest's
two-week presence on Stetson's campus came to a
close last Friday night at a
red carpet premiere event
inside the Stetson Room
The affair was as close
to a Hollywood premiere or
award ceremony as DeLand
could get, with hoards of
students dressed to the nines
and posing for photos on
an actual red carpet leading
into the upper level room in
the CUB, making everyone
in attendance feel like a star.
The night's hosts were
CMF's Promotion Manager
Wey Lin and Hatter Productions' President Naudia
Jones, who handed out raffle
prizes and humorously read
student's cinematic observations . submitted through
Twitter.
Students had one week
to complete a 5-minute or
less short film with free
rented equipment courtesy
of CMF, including a laptop
loaded with Adobe Creative
Cloud, a MacBook Pro, and
a Panasonic HD camera, in
addition to training and support.
A total of 48 movies
were submitted for judging by a panel of Stetson
students, staff, and faculty.
During the event, the top 16
entries were screened at random to a massive and enthusiastic audience.
Four films were awarded campus Jury Awards.
The winners of these awards
earned a 12-month membership to Adobe Creative
Cloud video editing software (a $600 value), CMF
t-shirts for each cast and
crew member, as well as
advancement to CMF Hollywood, a four-day series of
workshops, screenings, and
awards in June
The winning films included Sick, a tale about
a bedridden sister and her
brother's twisted care-giving, written and directed by
Crystal Bernadette; The In-
nerview, a humorous short
displaying a man's descent
into a hunger-driven madness (brilliantly portrayed
by Peter Flounder) during
a job interview; Spaceless
Craft, a charming music video created for singer-songwriter Zoya Zafar, directed
by Erin McCollum and starring the silent and stirring
Eliza Colmes and Andrew
Aldrich, and Two Diseases
That Want Me Dead, Hannah Marie's heartfelt tribute
to her mother's struggles
with Bipolar disorder and
alcoholism.
Two of those films also
received a Silver Tripod
Award. Sick took home Best
Actor for Frank DiMar-
co's devilish portrayal of a
brother caring for his immobilized sister, and Spaceless
Craft won best soundtrack.
Aubrianna Lee Spurgin-
Kabinu also picked up a
Silver Tripod award for
Best Actress in her polar
opposite rendering of a'dim-
witted woman whose plans
to be taken more seriously
involve an unexpected pregnancy in the film Quarter
Life Crisis.
Boogieboard culture
mockumentary Man Without
a Wave took home the Audience Award for the most
tallies at the door. Easily
being the most anticipated
short of the night, when the
film's opening shots of ocean
waves graced the projector
screen, a fever pitch eruption
brought several people out
of their seats in hysteric applause and impending laughter.
The remaining films
screened throughout the
night explored a variety of
themes: The struggles of
suicide depicted in the Lyn-
chian Apologies, body pos-
itivity as highlighted in The
Kallos Project, the downfall
of an abusive relationship
in 10 Steps, a piece of pasta
yearning for something more
in Life as a Cheese Ravioli, a
testament to the spirit of athletics in Being Us, a beautifully ambiguous recollection
in Homecoming, a hilarious,
yet cautionary tale about
unexpected pregnancy in
Knocked Up, the subtle metaphors of depression of The
Man Who Had No Words, a
musician's destined passion
in Salt of the Earth, and finding love due to the power of
the oh-so-lovable Rock in
Love on the Rocks
All films submitted for
the festival are available
