■■'.■ Thursday, November 15, 2012 Vol. CXX issue 7 Stetson University | DeLand, Fla Photo by: Ian Campbell Green Team wins scrimmage in front of over 2,000 fans Kayla Johnson Staff Contributor More than 2,000 students, alumni and Stetson fans gathered at the new Athletics Training Facility for the Green and White Homecoming Scrimmage. The Stetson football players were divided in two teams to compete against each other, giving spectators a little taste of what is in store for next year's official season. After a 56 year football drought, players and coaches definitely felt the excitement from the stands. "The energy around the program, around the university, and around the community has just been spectacular" Head Coach Roger Hughes said. "Today was absolutely the epitome of all that energy coming together." Keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats the entire game, the Green team snagged the 20-19 victory. The White team put up a good fight which was noticed by the coaches. "I told [the players] they looked like redshirt sophomores today," Hughes said. White led in the first quarter with punter James LaGamma's 32-yard field goal, putting them ahead 3-0. They continued to gain their momentum after recovering a fumble on Green's 46-yard line. The Green team's relentless defense allowed them to regain possession after stopping the White team on fourth and nine. On the punt return, QB Ryan Tentler of the Green team stunned the crowd with his 72-yard touchdown, putting them in the lead 7-3 with 1:44 remaining in the first quarter. "Our defense stepped up for us and that motivated me to get going," Tentler said. With just three seconds left in the first quarter, White running back Joe Sweeney ran for a three yard touchdown putting them back in the lead 9-7. The White team continued to show their stamina leading at the half 12-7. LaGamma was to thank for their 25-yard field goal. At the top of the third quarter, Green defensive back Donald Payne intercepted and returned the ball 35 yards for their second touchdown. "Personally, I thought I wasn't going to score, but I got in the end zone and celebrated with my team. Got to take the lead with that touchdown," Payne said. Along with Payne, linebacker Julius Holder led the game defensively collecting 10 tackles. "A lot of adrenaline was pumping through me," Holder said. "I just wanted to do my best and help my Green squad out." Green led the game 13-12 until White wide receiver Ryan Selimos caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jonathan Jerozal. Selimos stood out for the Hatters as well receiving 130 yards. "We had good looks offensively. I was able to find spots and great passes from the quarterbacks, great protection from the O-line. Offense today was a real team effort," Selimos said. Going into the fourth quarter, White lead 19-13. Green was determined to fight to the end having the previous scrimmage slip out of their hands. Green wide receiver Keegan Moore caught a 31-yard touchdown pass, from Tentler. Kicker Eric Fogle finished the play putting them back in the lead 20-19. After Green stopped White on their final fourth down of the game, they swarmed the field with emotion. The saying "defensive wins games" was no cliche for the Green team. "We were ecstatic when we saw that. It was incredible. Their fourth down, we made the final stop. Everyone ran onto the field. It was just really exciting," Holder said. This Green and White scrimmage set the bar for what is to come next season. "It's a small taste of how exciting this is going to be over the next five to six years," Hughes said. Photo by: Ian Campbell Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood headline Stetson's first Feather Fest Austin Fuller A&E Editor "Whose Line is it Anyway?" stars Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood performed at the Edmunds Center Friday, Nov. 2, for Stetson's first Feather Fest. According to the coordinator for Homecoming's Friday events, Daniele Mottier, the comedy performance sold out of its 2,200 tickets. Mottier said, however, that while the Edmunds Center was almost full, it appeared as though closer to three-quarters of the ticket holders attended the performance. "It's amazing to see that all this hard work has really payed off and even to see little kids laughing means a lot more to me than I thought it would," Mottier said. Stetson President Dr. Wendy Libby said that she "loved the show" and that she also "loved the television program they're on." "I've seen more excitement than I've ever seen before. Just a lot of pride in being a Hatter," Libby said of the difference between this Homecoming weekend and previous alumni weekends. Caitlyn Foster, who started Stetson's improv club, Mission Improv-able, said seeing Sherwood and Mochrie perform the moving- bodies game, an improv game in which audience members position and move the performers' bodies around in a scene, would help influence her future improv. "Just the way even if they were given something odd, how to keep rolling with it., just how quickly they justified everything," Foster said. "It was incredibly inspiring as someone who does improvisation all the time to know that it can be a career...It's just really inspiring to watch the people that you've looked up to come and do it." Andrew Ramos, an audience member who was called on-stage to perform sound effects for Mochrie during one of the improv games, said that he had previous improv experience and that getting to perform with Mochrie and Sherwood was amazing. "It was beautiful and surreal...Colin and Brad are just amazing. So to be up there and actually do sound effects, that's actually one of my favorite games, so to do that for Colin Mochrie, that's insane," Ramos said. Mochrie and Sherwood concluded their routine by saying that those who attended the show should create a legend of "the night Colin and Brad came to the home of the Hatters." The duo then broke into a song in which they took comedic jabs at how excited Stetson is to finally have a football team. Mochrie and Sherwood's performance came after an earlier pep rally in which head football coach Roger Hughes called on Stetson students to talk about Saturday's football scrimmage on twitter. "Let's get this thing trending all over the country," Hughes said. Feather Fest also featured a performance by Sibling Rivalry POI, a duo of fire twirlers who also give LED performances at nightclubs. "The comedy show ran late, so the end of their act was the only thing that everyone saw.
