Flip Barth Editor-in-Chief Since Aug. 1, Public Safety officers have written 687 total parking citations across campus. Theoretically, if all the tickets were paid in full Stetson would receive $30,750. Unfortunately for Stetson, many of these tickets were reduced to warnings, which carry no monetary fine. Also, 160 of the citations were writ ten for vehicles having no Stetson decal. Although 687 tickets may seem like a large number, Public Safety does not keep track of the total amount of tickets written to faculty and staff. The total number of tickets written by Public Safety since the beginning of the semester could be larger. According to Public Safety, "All parking and traffic fines must be paid to the Office of Student Ac counts prior to the release of school records, diplomas, certificates, or before a student can register for classes or activate pre-registration schedules." If the citation is not reduced to a warning or appealed students are responsible for paying the fine one way or another. Public Safety's website does not explain how faculty and staff pay for parking tickets. Public Safety officers have the authority to write tickets for 12 dif ferent parking citations. The most expensive citations are for either parking in a handicapped space or in a fire lane, which both carry a fine of $100. Since Aug 1 though, the most citations given were for parking in a prohibited zone. Between now and the beginning of the semester, this made up 289 of the 687 citations written. Public Safety defines that as, "any registered vehicle parking in a prohibited zone for any amount of time without having the proper parking permit for that area." Again, if all 289 of these tickets were paid, Stetson would receive $10,115. Parking on campus has become somewhat of a hassle considering the recent increase in students. There are currently 2,832 cars registered with Public Safety, which includes students, faculty and staff.
