Phonathon reaches goal

Nearly $50,000 has been pledged
during the Alumni Annual Fund
phonathon this week, due largely to
the contribution of time from
campus individuals, organizations
and greek organizations, according
to Jack Fortes, organizer for the
annual event.
The phonathon ended Thursday
night, ivith hopes that pledges would
exceed the fS0,0OO goal. After seven
nights of calls to alumni ail over the
United States, the amount reached
$47,885, with one more night to go
Fortes said.
"It's the best fall of contributions
we've ever had, Fortes said, "and
students have been the saving part."
For over 13 years, the phonathon
had been held during the month of
March to conclude the University's
fiscal year in June. According to
Fortes, the change in tax laws
forced the fundraiser to be held
before the end of 1986 to allow
alumm the advantages of a 100% tax
deduction on their income taxes.
In previous years volunteer
organizations had given their time
each night to make phone calls. This
year, however, local volunteers
were "worn out," Fortes explained
it was necessary to turn to students
as a ready-made audience."
Members of campus organizations
gathered each night in two teams
which would compete to see who
could ra1Se the highest amount of
pledges. Fortes said the idea of
competition between groups had
been thought of in the past, but local

Stetson University's Florida
WATS line has been discontinued
and replaced with a new long
distance company to provide call
billing services and reduce costs
according!to Director of Physical
Plant, Charles Johnson.
The University has contracted
with Microtek a long distance
service which will provide individual billing to each department.
The new service will replace Southern Bell's Florida WATS line due
to increasing costs.

for unlimited usage. In April the
amount was increased to $2000, and
is expected to increase to $2500 on
Oct. 7,1987, Johnson said.
The service, which was available
to personnel during the day and for
personal calls after regular hours
and on weekends was available 24
hours a day. Long distance services
were provided by AT&T for calls
outside of Florida, Johnson added.
According to reports, the "cap",
or maximum costs on WATS lines
was expected to be removed in
April, allowing each call to be
