At this year's State of the
University Address, President Pope
Duncan spoke about the change of
leadership at Stetson and the
problems the new president will
have to face, and Student Government Association President John
Moore discussed upcoming SGA
projects, including the possibility of
extended-visitation hours.
The State of the University Address was held 7:00 p.m., Monday
October 8, in the John E. Johns
Lecture Ball. Speaking for the
Student Government Association
was President John Moore.
After introducing President Pope
Duncan (President Elect Douglas
Lee was unable to attend), SUB
Director Bob McCarthy, Dr. Brian
Gillespie, Acting Provost, Rodney
Ellis, Director of the Carlton Union
Building, and David Troupe,
Director of Food Service, Moore
called on President Duncan to
reveals

Duncan opened his speech by
congratulating members on the SGA
participation this year.
Then Duncan described the events
involved in the transfer of the
presidency from himself to Dr. Lee.
One aspect he described was the new
president's responsibility of getting
the University's budget in order.

In a recent letter to Dean Jacobs of
the Stetson University College of
Law, President Duncan ordered The
Pretade,£he college of law's news
paper, "to stop featuring alcohol in
any form in , any university
publication". This directive, if
carried out will force The Prelude to
cancel or alter many of its advertising contracts.
According to a Prelnde editorial the
paper is only budgeted to recieve
$300 next semester after requesting
$1,200. This will result in an allotment of $37.50 per issue. The Prelude
claims it costs about $300 per issue to
publish. Prelude Editor, Nat Kidder,
stated that The Prelade is
primarially dependent on advertisements to cover its costs.
When asked to explain the decision
to stop alcholic advertsements
Duncan stated he was enforcing"
"University Policy". Duncar
elaborated, "Had I been aware of ii
earlier, it would have been stopped
before now." Duncan then
stated,"its always been a problem''
and continued by saying, "I don't
have to justify it (the ban)."
The Prelnde published an unsigned
editorial in its September 16,1986
issue which stated, "a news paper
that is advertiser supported, that is
"That's one responsibility I'm
glad to have lifted off my
shoulders," said Duncan with a
chuckle. Duncan continued by
challenging the University to raise
$200 million by the turn of the century. "So far we've reached $100'
million and it will be up to Dr. Lee to
continue the centennial fund,"

and staff, a proposal to place
bleachers on the intramural field,
and a bill calling for extended
parking privelges behind the library"

Another problem Dr. Lee will have
to face is area growth. The traffic on
Amelia Ave. has become unbearable. There are 4,500 pedestrian
crossings and 20,000 cars passing
through daily. In ten to fifteen years
that traffic is expected to increase
that all these guidelines are needed.
According to The Prelude Jacob said
"that the school (Stetson) already
does things the Baptists don't like
and we don't want to risk pissing
them off even further."

John Moore announced in his address to SGA that Dr. Jenkins , Dr. -
Gilespy , and Dave Troup of the
Food Administration would speak at
the annual State of the University
Address, Monday, October 5. Moore
also called attention to the fact that
there is a shortage of intramural
referees and all persons interested
in the situation should contact
parking
Dennis Davenport. As a final note
Moore reminded SGA that all
senators must receive an excuse
prior to SGA meetings if they are
unable to attend.
Following the President's Address
, Senator David Whidden suggested
a vote for Article 5 Section 4 of the
Stetson Constitution which defines
the responsibillities of participant
members. Regarding their election*

Top, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd and
the Police. Show times are 9 p.m.
and 12 midnight in the Edmunds
Center. Tickets will be on sale in the
Hat Rack. They're only $3.50 for
Stetson students-a real entertainment bargain.
Steve Moore recently declined
from his position as a SUB
representative due to lack of time.

TMs year's Mini-sub-hours are:
Monday-Wednesday-Friday-2:304:30;
Tuesday-Thursday-1:30-3:30. They
rent out canoes, tents, and all sorts
of camping equipment.
Fourteen SUB representatives left
Thursday, October 9th for a NACA
(National _ Association of Campus
Activities) Convention in Raleigh,
North Carolina. It will be in progress
through Sunday, October 12th. There
SUB members will scout out entertainers as well as learn how to
better represent their school.
