Johns room of Elisabeth Hall last Monday. The address included speeches from two of the three eomponants of the Stetson Commonwealth of Students, as well as several of the Universities key administrators and academic officers. The Address began at 8:00 P.M. when SGA President John Moore delivered opening comments and introduced the pannel of guests. The guests were; - President of the University Pope Duncan, President Elect Douglas Lee, SUB Vice President Mike Brennan, Acting Provost Bryan Gfilespie, Director of the Carlton Union Building Rodney Ellis, and Dean of Student Affairs Garth Jenkins. Duncan was called to speak first. Duncan stated that this year- has been very productive for the admissions office. He noted that more applications had been recleved and that would lead to national recognition. Fraternities bid Pledges By GLENN KINDRED Associate Editor The Stetson Greek community held its semi-annual Bid Piek-up ceremony to welcome forty two young men into fraternities. This Bid Pick-up, however, differed from those in the past because not ail of Stetson's eight national fraternities < participated. Bid Pick-up is held immedfatly following Rush each semester in front of the Carlton Union Building to allow newly pledged students to formally accept their bid for membership and to provide the- fraternities with a chance to show off their new Pledges or Associate Members, While six of Stetson's fraternities call candidates for . membership Pledges the other two; Phi Sigma Kappa and Lambda Chi Alpha, call their candidates Associate Members. In order for the University to allow a student to pledge or associate with a fraternity a student must be male, maintain at least a 2.0 grade point JCONTIMJEDONP.4)i Duncan continued by stating that the Universities Master Plan was preceding and the University was almost ready to begin the next phase. He added that this progress would "Makethis as beautiful and functional as any campus anywhere." Duncan also noted that Lee's Provost Search committee had ! stated Dr. Lewis Brakeman will begin his tenure in July. He added that the University is still searchiong for a Vice President of Development and Fundraising. Duncan concluded his remarks by stating that he felt Lee would "make a splendid leader." Duncan has been named Chancellor of the University and will step down from the Speaking on behalf of the SGA John Moore then gave his remarks. Moore stated that he feels the SGA is gaining in influence and is now running more efficiently than in the past. He added that participation of students has "radically increased." Moore then listed the accomplishments of the SGA. The sky is the limit to make Steton the kind of university you want it to be." SUB Vice President Mike Brennan then spoke. Brennan was filling in for SUB President Laura McCarthy who is currently attending a convention to book entertainers for the University. (C»NTIMUEDONP.4K Maddox gi¥es Last Class Lecture ByP.T.WASMUND Staff Writer This past Tuesday evening Stetson University along with the Department of Residential Life presented its last speaker in the on campus lecture series. This lecture series has been an effort by Stetson and the Department of Residential Life to give the students a chance to hear and question professors outside of the academic environment. The last featured speaker was Dr. Nick Maddox, currently Assistant Professor of Management in Stetson's School of Business. Dr. Maddox did his undergraduate studies at East Carolina University. He completed Ms Masters Degree at MarshaE University, and received the Ph.D. from The Florida" State University in Tallahassee. During the hour lecture Dr. Maddox addressed the topic of "What the future holds in store for the citizens of earth." Dr. Maddox (CONTIMJEDGNP.4) Lady Hatters set record against UCF By SCOTT WILLIAMS Sports Writer Behind Dieidre Hillery's 26 points and 11 rebounds, the Stetson Lady Hater basketball team routed their arch-rivals, the U.C.F. Knights, 100- 64 to set an all-time school record for most victories in one season. The Lady Hats lifter their record to 17-7 (6-3 in the New South Conference), and upped their record in the Edmunds Center to 12-3. Although the outcome of the game was never in doubt, the action became exciting as the game reared its conclusion. At halftime, fans became aware of Hillery's persuit of 1,000 points scored for a career. Coming into the game she was 25 points shy, and she returned with 2:11 left in the second half needing seven points to reach the century mark. However, U.C.F. was so preoccupied in trying to stop Hiilery that other Hats began hitting one layup after another, lifting the team's point total closer and closer to 100, Finally, with one second on the clock, Hiliery stole a pass at mid- court only to be fouled, sending her to the free throw line. Score: Stet- son-98, U.C.F.-64, Hiliery 999 points. With a sheepish grin on her face and the cheers of the crowd in the background, Dee drilled both tosses giving herself 1,001 points in her career white helping Stetson score 100 points. The 36 point win was very satisfying for head coach Nancy Nichols. "Sure, in some ways this is just one more win. But in many others this is a measuring stick for our program. We're going forward. Our record, style of play, and the type of athletes we have on the floor all show that we are building a good program.! To set thetall-time record for wins in very satisfying personally."! The Hatterswere never headed in this one, as they opened up a quick 12-2 lead and never trailed by less than 13 points during the remainder of the contest. Ten different Hatters played more than 10 minutes each, giving much needed rest for some of the ailing Hatters. "Brenda (Eason) has a problem with a ligament in her knee.
