Jewish Hillel Foundation awaiting acceptance by student affairs ajg

A group of Jewish students is
awaiting acceptance by the Student AfMrs Committee for their
organization, affiliated with the
national Jewish group the Hillel
Foundation.
The Stetson group formulated a constitution and bylaws,
includingPassover, Hannukah,
and Yom Kippur.
Rosenberg said to past years
she has contacted the Food Service about providing kosher
meals duringreligious holidays,
but was unsuccessful.
She said because Stetson
does not offer any special recognition to Jewish students during the holidays, she was
prompted to start the group.
Jenkins, Beasley, and Eisen
were unavailable for comment.
The group wiE meet about
onceamonth to begin with, said
Rosenberg, because almost
everyone in the group is heavily
involved in other campus
activities.
She said social activities
could include gathering during
holidays for kosher meals. Religious activities may include
hosting speakers and attending
seminars to learn about their
Jewish heritage.
Rosenberg said Stetson is

the school's listing in a directory
of schools with Jewish affilia
tion. She said there hadbeen no
opposition at any level of the
university to formation of the
group. - „

her faith had become stronger.

SGA recently voted to
approve a donation of $200 to
theProjectFeed-A-Family. This
motion was considered after a
local man who is employed with
the Neighborhood Center which
is sponsoring the project spoke
to the full Senate.
Senator David Whidden
berg said she didn't know when
the committee' would vote, but
was told it would be soon.
Rosenberg said the group
would be both social and
religious.
"We're just tiying to organize
a social or religious group so
that we can be together during
the Jewish holidays," she said.
Most major Jewish holidays
fall during the school calendar,
students asking if they'd be
interested in forming an
organiation.
"The response was overwhelmingly *yes,'" she said.
There are approximately 30
Jewish students at Stetson.
Rosenberg said fellow group
member Eric Eisen met with
feculty advisor James Beasley
and Dean of Student Affairs
Garth Jenkins to draft the constitution and bylaws.
opposed the donation, claiming
that it is not the purpose of the
SGA to be a "charity organization". Whidden attempted to
propse an amendment which
wouold change the SGA donation into a dollar matching
incentive. ' l
Before Whidden was able to
propose his amendment he was
ruled out of order by the chair
for not having his amendment
presented in written form.
Senator Hansen then proposed an amendment which
would double the amount of
original $100 proposal. This
amendment passed after little
debate.
When the question was
called of the entire proposal, the
Senate voted overwhelmingly to
pass the motion. SGA on 11
