Fight over Winter Term continues

The battle at Stetson University over the fate of Winter Term
has continued unabated this last
week.
According to a memo obtained
by the Stetson Reporter, the Faculty
Senate Academic Affairs Committee met behind closed doors last
Thursday, November 5, to discuss
the Provost's report on Winter Term.
The outcome ofthe that meeting is
not known at this time.
The report that the memo alluded to was a lengthy ten-page
analysis of Winter Term written by
Provost Louis Brakeman for the
Faculty Senate. In this report was
the recommendation by Brakeman
to end Winter Term. Also included
in the report is a brief history of
Winter Term, the results of an informal survey sent out to 145 faculty members last May, and commentary by Brakeman.
This last week, a survey was
also sent out to all students by the
Student Government Association
to determine students' interest in
keeping Winter Term. The survey
asked general questions about past
experiences with Winter Term, the
personal feelings of students to
Winter Term, anda section in which
students were presented four options concerning the fate of Winter
Term.
The four options presented to
students included two choices to
keep Winter Term and two choices
toend WinterTerm. Thefirst choice
students were presented with involved maintaining the status quo.
This would involve no change in
Mugavero resigns after 2 seasons

Mike Mugavero, who has
served as Stetson University'sHead
Men's Soccer Coach for two seasons, has announced his resignation effective December 11.
Mugavero, 25, was promoted
to the head coaching position in
April of 1991 after serving two
seasons as assissant coach under
Gary McKinley. Mugavero has
compiled a 7-27 (.206) career mark
while guiding the Hatters.
"I sincerely thank Stetson for
the opportunity to develop professionally," Mugavero said. "It is
tough leaving after making such
good friends among the Stetson
and DeLand communities, but I
have no reservations leaving the
position as I plan to pursue options
in my family's business."
Mugavero has taken an active
role during summer months working with his father who co-directs
the successful Pocono Cup Soccer
Tournaments in East Stroudsburg,
Pa.
"I am sorry to see him leave
us," said Stetson Director of Athletics Bob Jacoby. "We certainly
felt he was on the right track in
building a solid program here. It's
not only a loss for the soccer program, but for our department as
well."
Jacoby indicated a search for
Mugavero's replacement would be
initiated immediately. Additionally, a head women's soccer coach
position will also be announced
shortly as the Stetson Athletic Department will add the sport next
fall.
Despite announcing his decision after the Hatters final game of
the 1992 season Friday afternoon,
Mugavero opted to remain on staff
until Dec. 11 to support his players
through the completion of the fal
academic semester.

the length or content of Winter
Term and would maintain the current school year of sixty-six days for
Fall semester, seventeen days for
Winter Term, and sixty-four days
for Spring Term.
The second choice involved
the total elimination of Winter
Term. Under this option, Stetson
might adopt a calendar similar to
the state university system. Under
this system, there would be two
semesters both running for seventy-four days. This year in the
state system„classes run from August 21 until April 24.
A modified winter term was
presented as the third option of
dealing with the WinterTerm question. This option might involve returning Winter Term to its original
status as a four or five week term.
Last, students were presented
with the elimination of Winter
Term but retaining the possibility of creating an optional May
term in which students could take
advantage of internships, trips
abroad, and possibly the completion of Senior research.
According to Gayle Littleton,
President ofthe Student Government Association, and Ron Piccolo, Vice-President of S.G.A.,
the results ofthe surveys are being sent to Stetson's Institutional
Research department and should
beavailable midway through this
week.
The lines of this battle over
Winter Term appear to be drawn
between the different colleges of
Stetson University and rough categories of Stetson faculty. For the
