Clinton's Daytona visit draws student participation

Governor Bill Clinton's
Presidential Bus Tour stopped
briefly in Daytona Beach on Monday for a private rally at
Bethune-Cookman College and a
larger gathering at thebeach' sband
shell.
The group consistedofBill
Clinton, Al Gore, and their wives
Hillary Clinton and Tipper Gore.
Also in attendance were
several Florida political figures,
including Bob Graham, Buddy
McKay, and local nominees for
public office.
The Clinton campaign
extended a personal invitation to
the Stetson Young Democrats and
chartered a Gray Line bus to transport Clinton supporters from the
CUB stepsto the Bethune-Cookman
College auditorium.
The rally, scheduled to
begin at 8:45am, included an hour
and a half prelude during which the
Bethune Cookman choirs offered
renditions of various gospel and
secular selections.
A standing ovation welcomed the Clinton party when they
made their appearance at 9:45am.
Loaded with cameras, telephones, computers, and other
communication equipment, the
press quickly established them-

befittingly related the importance
of education to his goal of making
the U.S. a competitive participant
in an increasingly challenging

With former President
Jimmy Carter coming to Stetson in
a few weeks, the university seems to
be undergoing some changes.
One detail that is noticeable is that the campus bookstore is
now carryingtwo of
the seven books
authored by Carter
in the "Recommended Book" section.
If taken
advantage of, these
books should give
more insight to the
private life and
presidential term of
the nation's leader,
which are, for most undergraduates, justvague grade school memories.
The more serious of the
two book, Keeping Faith: Memoirs
of a President, was a number one
best seller, published in ] 982 after
he left the office of President.
The memoir covers major
issues (i.e. Iran Hostage Crisis) in
the thirty-ninth president's term in
office.
As an outsider to Washington, Carter gives a home town
insight into the dealings of our
nation's capital.
The 596 pager
will set you back
$17.50 and takes
sometime to read, but
it is well work the effort.
Political Science
and History majors
might be interested in
this book.
The more personable book, An
Outdoor Journal: Adventures and Reflections, a Personal
Memoir, was a New
York Times Best-seller printed in
1988 that covers the lighter side of
the president and his time away
from the oval office.

The president of BCC introduced Bob Graham, who in turn
presented Vice Presidential nominee Al Gore.
Al Gore presented his belief about the proper direction for
the United States in the next four
years.
He was interrupted several times by loud applause.
Al Gore prefaced his introduction of Bill Clinton with a
summary of his achievements in
the state of Arkansas and a prediction of his success if elected
President.
Bill Clinton's speech was
an enumeration of his various economic and social policies.
He focused on the future
of education, which he believes is
in jeopardy under the Bush/Reagan
xtlicies.

Bill and Hillary Clinton
and Al and Tipper Gore descended
from the stage and made their way
down a line of supporters who
waited to shake hands and ask for
autographs.
Within a few minutes,
the team had left Bethune-
Cookman College for the Daytona
Beach band shell.
Proceedings at the band
shell were interrupted briefly by a
scuffle at the front ofthe crowd in
which several Stetson Bush supporters were later implicated.
Following the Daytona
Beach rallies, the Clinton-Gore
bus tour left for other Florida gatherings.
Florida polls reflected an
increased support for the Clinton-
