McAloon Stetson's annual "Hatter Holiday" starts this evening at dinner and runs until tomorrow night. The events this year will include a concert by the Mission Mountain Wood Band, two movies, an afternoon in DeLeon Springs and a "Sadie Hawkins" dance. ■ "It's a chance for people to have a good time." said Dennis Dunn, coordinator of the weekend's events. The special concert begins tonight at 5:00 and runs to 7:00 and will be held by Hully Tower. Later tonight, there will be two movies, one of which will be shown out, doors in the Forest of Arden. The first movie is Tommy with Ann- Margaret and Roger Daltry. Tommy will begin at 8:30 in the Forest. The second movie will be Serpieo with AI Pacino and Forensics Team Ranked No. 1 The National Forensics Association has recently ranked the Stetson forensics team number one in the country, it was announced last week by forensics coach Ron Baugt-. In addition to its number one ranking, the forensics team also learned that it is currently the strongest school in &e running for the coveted Founders Trophy, given in recognition of achievement over the past five years. The team is currently preparing for the Individual Events Nationals Tournament, to be held April 20-24 at Monmouth College, New Jersey. "The team is much improved this year over last year's squad," Baugh commented. "If every member works as he or she has pledged tc, we should do very well at this Nationals tournament, and pretty well lock up the Founders Trophy." This optimism is shared by Speech Union president Jeff Crowe. "In quantity and quality, we have one of the best teams in competition," he remarked. Saturday events begin at noon in DeLeon Springs. The SUB will be providing transportation beginning at 11:30. At the springs there will be an all day Cellar Door with local talent along with games and events pegged as "College Fads." Hatter Weekend will end with a "Sadie Hawkins Dance" to be held in front of the CUB. "Originally, Hatter Weekend was on a Wednesday and the school would close down," said Dunn. In recent years, however, the holiday has been celebrated on a weekend. Students will have only one expense for the weekend; there will be a fifty cent charge for the DeLeon Springs events. Approximately $1,750 was budgeted for the holiday and Dunn stated that close to that amount was expended. John Gardner To Speak Monday Novelist, critic, Medieval scholar and teacher Dr. John Gardner will speak at Stetson Next Monday, April 17, at 8:30 p.m. in Elizabeth Hall. Originally scheduled as the keynote speaker for this year's Winter Term, Dr. Gardner had to cancel that appearance to undergo surgery tor cancer. Now recovered from the operation, Dr. Gardner's appearance at Stetson next Monday is being sponsored by the Artists and Lecturers Committee. His works include The Life and Times of Chaiieer, Grendel, October Light, poetry, and fairy tales for children and adults. He has also done radio plays, and worked on TV and film scripts. What he wants to do in his talks, he says, "Is encourage thoughtful people to speak out against the bad (first understanding what makes bad art bad), because not to do so is to lose our society's values by default." Dr. Gardner received his BA frmom Washington University, and his MA and PhD from the State University of Iowa. He has taught at nine universities and colleges throughout the country, specializing in medieval literature, creative writing, some classics and contemporary literature. In recent years, he has been teaching less simpley "because I've run out of time." He now works mainly on creative writing classes, having developed a special approach to teaching such classes. The theory behind this approach will be found in his soon-to-be-released book, Thor's Hammer. John Gardner: Monday April 17, at 8:30 p.m. m Elizabeth Hall Attorney General Candidate To Visit By Larry Golf Mel Pearlman, Republican Candidate for Attorney General, will be visiting the Stetson Campus on April 20. Pearman's day long visit is being sponsored by the Stetson College Republicans. On April 20, at 3:30 p.m. Pearlman will be conducting an informal discussion with all interested students in the faculty lounge of the Carlton Union Building. That evening he will deliver a major address in the Davis Hall Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. There will be a reception afterwards. Pearlman, 33, has been very active in Republican politics for the past ten years and is presently an elected member of the Orange County Republican Executive Committee. He has long been a member of the Florida Federation of Young Republicans and has worked diligently for the state federation, particularly in modernizing its platform and presenting Republican philosophy and principles in positive terms. From 1966 to 1970, Pearlman was employed with RCA and the Boeing Company at the Kennedy Space Center working on the Gemini and Apollo manned space programs. He also worked on the Minuteman III ICBM test programs. In early 1970, he became a consultant to. the Space Shuttle Program and was instrumental in bringing the primary launch facility for the shuttle to Cape Canaveral. Pearlman obtained his law degree in 1972, and entered the private practice of law in Winter Park. In November, 1974, he opened his own office in Winter Park specializing in trial practice and criminal law. The Stetson Republicans are in charge of Pearlman's visit. During the day he will be attending coffees, meetings with various newspaper and radio stations, and & courtesy cali with President Duncan. Pearlman's schedule will end with his 7:30 p.rn. speech in Davis Hall. All interested students and DeLand residents are invited to attend.
