Electrical Problems Shut Down Radio Station

WHAT - "The Stereo
Sound of Stetson" - is off the
air due to a problem in the
stereo-or control-board. The
station is expected to be off
, the air for a minimum of one
week, according to Theo
Etzel, director of the intra-
University radio station.
Fears of a fire hazard had
been expressed by some, but
Etzel explained the
situations "There is no fire
hazard. The transformer
inside the stereo board
malfunctioned, and the
board just wouldn't work.
The power was then cut, and
a local engineer, Tim Trott,
checked the board."
It was Trott who
discovered that the problem
arose from a tar-like substance which coats the interior of the transformer.
For some (unknown) reason
the tar had begun to "ooze"
in Etzel's words, causing the
problems.
"The power to all parts of
the station is now off, and
there is absolutely no fire
hazard, either to the building
(the Carlton Union Building)
as a whole to jhe station
area," said Etzel.
The board, built by GLI
Disco, has been used by
WHAT since the station's
inception almost two years
ago with no previous
problems.
Once a year an engineer
checks out the board for
possible malfunctions. Mr.
Trott was not at the station to
check the board when the
problem was discovered, but
was asked by the station
management to check the
board as a precaution,
however. Mr. Trott then
found the oozing tar and
suggested that the station be
immediately closed down.
As of Tuesday, the station
should be open by about
October §-8.

Students Go To Polls In 'Near Record Numbers'

Stetson students went to the polls in near-record
numbers last Tuesday to elect selected positions to the
Student Assembly, Judiciary Council, and Publications
Board.
In all, twenty new members were elected to the Student
Assembly, two positions were filled on the Judiciary
Council, and a representatives-large was elected to the
Publications Board.
"We had no problems whatsoever," stated Assembly
president Ion Sancho, coordinator of the election, adding,
"I was particularly pleased with the off-campus vote. Over
280 votes came from off campus students."
In the off-campus race for Student Assembly, senior :
Tim Scranton easily pulled in the largest number of votes to
secure one of the four off-campus rep positions. Jim Eolfes,
Pam Cole, and Bob Rains were also elected to the Assembly
from off-campus.
In other Assembly positions, Michelle Blank and
Debbie Miley were elected from Emily Hall, with Miley
pulling in only two more votes than opponent Kelly Duffield.
Cathie Clemmer and Margaret Healy were elected from
Stetson Hall, Dean Bethea and John Draper from Smith
Hall, and Gary Wolfe and Ed Towson were elected from
Carson Hall.
Two races for Assembly representative — from New
Tuesday's turnout was the second highest
in Stetson history
Men's Form and Gordis Hall—resulted in only one winner
each with a subsequent run-off on Friday to determine a
second representative. Jack Scalera was elected from New
Men's and Russ Bauseh from Gordis. In the run-off on
Friday, Tony Julian and Dan Perry will compete for New
Men's and Richard Filson and David Fox will oppose each
other from Gordis Hall.
Six representatives were elected to the Assembly
unopposed: Yvette Webster and Debbie West from
Chaudoin Hall, Dana Dunmire and Cindy Lampert from
Conrad, and Rhett Barker and Harry Messersmith from
Frat Row.
In the two Judiciary Council races, Mark Thrash
narrowly defeated Kevin McDonough for the position of
Junior male rep, and Patricia Boyd defeated Pauling
Evans for the Senior female position.
Freshman Joni Ammazzalorso ran uncontested in the
race for Freshman Representative-at-large to the
Publications Board.
According to -Sancho, the election was the second
largest turnout in the history of Stetson, second only to the
election held last December.

Blood Drive Scheduled Next Week

October 34 in the Stetson
Room of the Carlton Union
Building.

counting on a heavy turnout

This year's blood drive will
have a new twist to it,
making it easier to fit a blood
donation into your schedule.
Students will be able to pre-
register for a table for a
specified time on Friday
"We have approximately
80-90 cadets that will either
work at the blood drive, give
blood, or both," commented
Captain Leo LaFranee of the
ROTC. "The ROTC will have
representation there from
opening to closing."
LaFranee indicated that
special recognition wiH be
given to the top three
organizations on campus
that have the largest percentage of turnouts for the
drive.
Another added incentive
for students to give Wood will
be a free chicken dinner and
refreshments provided after
donation by the co-sponsors.
