Borders, vice president-student affairs at Stetson University, has been elected president of Palm Beach Atlantic College, it was announced Monday afternoon by Riley Sims, chairman. The announcement followed the election by Trustees of the college held in West Palm Beach. Assembly Eyes Book Company By Frank McAloon On their October 5 meeting, the Student Assembly discussed and voted on two resolutions presented by Russ Bauseh, Gordis Hall representative. The resolutions dealt with the Southwestern Book Company and a financial statement from the Commons and Hat Rack. Resolution 78-1 deals with the creation of a "task force" under the tutorage of the Campus Affairs subcommittee of the Assembly. This "task force" would investigate "improprieties concerning a firm known as Southwestern Book Company." The task force would be terminated with its final report. Bauseh had originally desired a separate committee created for the investigation. The Assembly, however, decided to ga the task-force route suggested by the Vice-President and Secretary of the Assembly Deb Fanner. Farmer is also the chairman of the Campus Affairs sub-committee. Bauseh described the task force as "just a housekeeping" committee whose duty it was to look into the book company's past. Apparently, the Southwestern Book Company has been under investigation by a number of colleges in California with one school taking the company to court. Resolution 78-2, also presented by Bauseh, asked that "a request be sent to Mr. Boone from the Assembly to publish a financial statement concerning the operation of the Commons and the Hat Rack." Farmer suggested that this committee be placed under the direction of the Campus Affairs Committee as another "task force." John Draper, Smith Hall representative, raised the point that the "motion couid be viewed by the SUB (Stetson Activities Board) adversely." Said Draper, "Mr. Boone would say it would go through the Commons Committee (an arm of the SUB." Despite the objection, the Assembly unanimously voted to refer the resolution to the Campus Affairs subcommittee. Bauseh had no objection to this move. In The News,.. He will assume his responsibilities at Palm Beach Atlantic in January succeeding Dr. Warren Fusselle who resigned as president in May. "The decision to leave Stetson and DeLand was certainly not easy," Dr. Borders commented. "Stetson has been wonderful to us during our twenty-year association and we shall always love and support our alma mater. I regret that I will not have an opportunity to work with Stetson's new president, Dr. Pope A. Duncan. After having worked with him for only three months, I am confident Stetson will grow and prosper under his effective leadership." "When the 21st century historians do their research, they will find that some of the greatest years in the life of Stetson University came under the capable leadership of Br. Duncan," Dr. Borders added. Dr. Borders served as chief administrative officer of, Stetson during the interim period following the resignation of Dr. John E. Johns as president and the election of Dr. Pope A. Duncan one year later. "Stetson will sorely miss the administrative abilities, leadership and wise counsel of George Borders," Dr. Duncan stated Mowing the announcement in West Palm Beach. "He has been an effective force for this institution for twenty years and it had been our hope that we would have many years of work and. fellowship together." Dr. Borders served the city of DeLand as a City Commissioner and the area as a member of the Board of Directors of the Volusia County Drug Council and the advisory board of the West Volusia Hospital Authority. "Now is indeed an exciting time to be moving from Florida's oldest and finest institution of higher learning," Dr. Borders stated. "I am confident that my twenty-year association with Stetson has provided me with the necessary preparation and experience to assist Palm Beach Atlantic College in reaching its full potential" The election of Dr. Borders is the third instance in George R. Borders recent years when Stetson has provided a president to another institution of higher learning. Dr. Harold Schuttz was named president of Bethel College in 1971 and Dr. John E. Johns was elected president of Furman University in 1976. Con a. p. 5 Debaters Take Honors In Tourney "Highest Ranked Team! Best win-loss Record and Highest Total Speaker Points,": that's the honor earned this past weekend by Stetson debaters Jack Peher and Jeff Crowe, two 2nd-year debaters who competed as a team at Stetson's 9th Annual Invitational Debate Tournament. The tournament was held here on campus and was attended by 30 teams from over 15 schools throughout the Southeast, S of these teams from Stetson. Looking at the record of those teams, as well as several other surprises of the weekend, debate coach, Ron Baugh, is full of pride and optimism. "It's amazing!" says Baugh. "In this tournament we have'six teams competing. That's the largest squad we've ever had, and the largest squad of any other school in the South. And of those six teams, four were eligible for the octafinal cut, the cut of the top 16 teams at the tournament." "Three Stetson students, Jack Pelzer, Jeff Crowe and Mike Reeser, would have been eligible for speaker awards, being in the top ten speakers." Mr. Baugh explained that none of the Stetson teams, not even Jack and Jeff with a 74 record, actually advanced into the final rounds. Since Stetson was the host school, its own teams were ineligible to win the tournament. "And not only are our teams winning now, but we have students contacting us from across the nation to come to school here to debate a year from now. Just this weekend we received such a letter from alumnus recommending two high school students aH the way from Missouri who have expressed interest in Stetson debate." The caliber of Stetson's program makes it one worthy of notice. For example, in the final round of competition at the tournament this weekend, the finalists were teams from the University of Miami and the University of Georgia. Georgia was the winner and was awarded the first place title and a huge traveling trophy. According to Professor Baugh, "these two schools are traditionally very strong debate schools, and proved it by their performance in the finals." Stetson debaters were ineligible to only watch the final round this weekend. But at the tournaments that comprise Stetson's Fall schedule, the Stetson team expects to be doing much more than watching. Their successes in the Stetson tournament's preliminary rounds was a good beginning.
