The Stetson Volume 90 Number 23 Stetson University DeLand, Fla April 21, 1978 ' Myers, McAloon, Cavanaugh Elected, Run-Off Today For Assembly President Chopin In Concert By RUSSELL SCHROPP Tuesday's general campus elections made winners out of Wade Myers, Frank McAloon, Kim Cavanaugh,. and others, but left unanswered the question of who will be the next president of the Student Assembly. The field still in the running for the Assembly presidency has been narrowed from four candidates to two, John Draper and Andy Smith, who will compete in a run-off election today. Draper managed the largest vote count, pulling in 40 percent of the 691 votes cast while Smith drew 25 percent of the voters. Meanwhile, outright victories were won Tuesday by Wade Myers in the race for Judiciary Council president, by Frank McAloon in the election for Reporter editor, and by Kim Cavanaugh in the election for president of the Stetson Union Board. Myers easily outdrew opponent Mark Thrash, garnering 508 votes to Thrash's 248-or two-thirds of the electorate. McAloon decisively defeated Barbara Knipper for the Reporter editorship, drawing 57 percent of the vote. Final vote count was 370 for McAloon, 274 for Knipper. And in the race for SUB president, Cavanaugh came away an easy winner, capturing 53 percent of the Sig £p Char/of Pull Nets $200 The Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity held its annual Chariot Pull on Saturday, April 8, and raised approximately $200 through pledges of local businesses. As had been the custom, the money raised in the Chariot Pull is donated to some worthy organization, and this year's recepient is the Stetson History Department and the proposed John E. Johns Film Room. One of the more colorful sights in Stetson's Spring, the Chariot Pull consists of a 25 mile run from the Sig Ep house to the ocean at Daytona Beach. Relay teams each pull the the chariot about 100 yeards and are then picked up and cont'd, p. 4 vote in a three-man race. Opponent Dennis Dunn drew 26 percent of the votes while Mark Cobb managed 21 percent. Under the Assembly's election guidelines, a run-off election is required if any one candidate fails to receive more than 50 percent of the total vote. In addition to the election of the Assembly president, other run-offs being held today include: The election for SUB representatives at large. Tuesday's election resulted in the selection of six of the eight, representatives, and the final two will be selected today from a field of four candidates: John Bishop, Kurt Panouses, John Yan- chek, and Gail Shuck. The election for Judiciary Council rising senior male. Keith Gold, Brad Berko, and Daryl Richards are the three candidates remaining from an original field of five. The election for Judiciary Council rising junior male. Alex Ford and Vlic Scott are the remaining candidates in this election. And the election for Judiciary Council rising sophomore male. Larry Goff and Tony Julian remain from an original field of six. In other election results, Ed Towson defeated Gary Wolfe for business manager of the Reporter; Amy Speers defeated Rick Eggers for business manager of the Hatter; Rebecca Brannon defeated Karen Schmitt as the rising junior female representative to the Judicary Council; Diana Luke defeated Karen Jackson for the rising sophomore female positon on the Judiciary; and Michael DeGolyer defeated Hunt Limbaugh as the Liberal Arts School representative to the Student Affairs Com- mitteee. The Hatters tallied 290 sweepstakes points in a field of 30 schools from throughout the eastern United States with second place Morehouse College of Atlanta earning 225. "This tournament has been a testing ground for Nationals," pointed out Coach Ronald Baugh, who was recognized as Outstanding Copch at the tournament. Stetson travels to Monmouth College in New Jersey for the eighth annual '. National Championships in Individual Speaking April 20- 22 to detent its. record of placing in the top 12 schools in the nation for five consecutive years. Jim McCarty, Brandon, was ranked second overall speaker at the tournament winning: first place in duet interpretation with his partner Monica Wiebe, Daytona Beach; second place in persuasion; third place in rhetorical criticism and fourth place in poetry interpretation. Michele Miles, Boynton Beach, ranked third overall. speaker, won second places in exptemporaneous speaking, impromptu speaking and rhetorical criticism. Jeff Crowe, Ocala, was ranked sixth overall speaker at the tournament for his second place win in after- dinner speaking. In prose interpretation, Cheri Varnadoe, Winter Gardens, took forst place honors while Liz Paz, Miami Springs, came in second Miss Varnadoe also placed sixth in poietry in terpretation. Kim Swoyer, DeLand, ranked sixth place in extemporaneous speaking. Jack Pelzer, Altamonte Springs, came in fourth in rhetorical criticism. Mortar Board Inducts Nine women were inducted into Stetson University's Mortar Board Wednesday night, according to Mortar Board president Linda Harkness. Those inducted include Charlotte Breed, Sebring; Beth Fogle, DeLand; Amanda Gable, Marietta, Ga.; Donna Hope, Gainesville; Jill Jinks, Atlanta; Mrs. Kathryn Johnson, DeLand; Karen Mclntyre, Largo; Tracey Sutherland, Avon Park; and Nancy Uhl, Ft. Pierce. Mortar Board is a national honorary for women who have been outstanding in the areas of service, scholarship and leadership. Stetson's chapter was established in 1935 by Etter Turner, fonder Dean of Women at Stetson.
