'''/Florida's Oldest College Newspaper" 73rd YEAR No. 28 STETSON UNIVERSITY, DELAND, FLORIDA FRIDAY, MAY 13, 1960 .> Plans Set For Leaders to Meet Next Weekend ,Plans have been set by the Student Affairs Committee sand the Student Government Association for a.Leadership Conference on the weekend of May 21. The outstanding student leaders of the major student organizations and many university officers have been invited to this two-day "retreat." The 135 students and administrators will have as their purpose some early planning for the 1960-61 academic year, leadership training, and an opportunity to better acquaint themselves with their mutual problems. Camp Eaton, a Youth Conservation Camp near Oeala, will be the headquarters for the weekend conference. All participating stu- ■ .ents will leave Stetson on Saturday and return to the campus on Sunday afternoon. The opening session on Saturday will divide the participants into groups of similar interests. The general group discussions will concern themselves with Greek Week activities, denominational discussions, and student government plans for next year. Co-chairman and eo-ordinators for the conference are Dean Parker, Dean Olofson, Judy Cox and Bill Lyon. The key speaker on leadership will be Dr. Joe Sutton of the psychology department, i UWE KLINGER IS CHESS CHAMPION by Helen Megee In the chess tournament, Uwe Klinger made the 82nd move to finally defeat Louis Martini and win the title of Champion Stetson Chessplayer. * The beginning of the end came when Martini deviated from the theoretical opening variation and Klinger unleashed a somewhat premature attack upon his opponent's King which was rendered futile through Martini's defense. This stage of the game was followed by the exchange of several pieces, further equalizing the board. During the end game phase, Martini committed an inaccuracy which resulted in the loss of two pawns. Martini again managed to defend and prolonged the game to the 82nd move. Except for the Louis Ebert- Patrick Kelly game, which will have no effect on the upper standings of the tournament, all games are completed. Winner is Uwe Klinger with nine points, with Louis Martini second by one point. Larry Richardson is third with six points and Bob Bennett fourth with five Tie for fifth and sixth places with four points each are Dr. Gilbert Lycan and Clarence Fouse. Mr. Bob Blake, Louis Ebert and Pat Kelly, and Charles Harrison trail in that order. POINTS TROPHY WON BY ZETAS Sigma Alpha Omega Joins National Group The Stetson mathematics honorary, Sigma Alpha Omega, has petitioned and been accepted as a member of the national mathematics fraternity Kappa Mu Epsilon. A formal initiation will take place at 'a banquet May 26 at Hunter's Rlestaurant. Miss Orpha Ann Culmar, professor at Alabama State Teachers College in Florence, Alabama, and a national officer of the society, will be the presiding officer. Stetson is to be the first university iri the state of Florida to become affiliated with Kappa Mu Epilson, and will be known as the Floria Alpha Chapter of the society. At a recent election, the math students elected David Hayes pres- dent of the honorary, to fill the office vacated by Ann Severance Booth. Other officers elected were: Donna Stevens, vice president; Nancy Walker, secretary; Jerry Tate, treasurer; Col. Way- land Parr, corresponding secretary; and Dr. Gene Medlin, faculty advisor. JIM MOODY ELECTED GENERAL MANAGER OF STETSON BAND The Stetson University Band elected its new officers for next year, this past week. They are: President and General Manager, Jim Moody; Publicity Chairman, and Vice President, Gail Johnson; Operations Chairman, Bill Seigel; Secretary-Treasurer, Eleanor Dickey; and Social Chairman, Donna Evans. Four members were also selected to work on the operations crew, including Gus Lee, Jack Robinson, Richard Matlack, and Robert Wood. These people will go into office immediately. LANIER HEADS PHI'S Phi Society, freshman scholastic honorary, recently elected Jim Lanier to serve as president for the coming year. Other officers are: Judy MacKenzie, vice-president; Sandra Porep, secretary; and Mary Lou Goslin, treasurer. At the present time, Phi Society is conducting the annual Quiz Bowl, under the chairmanship of Jay Haskell. Tri-Delts Win Trophy Named For Teacher Last night the Women's Intramurals Board honored Miss Esther Hick with the annual Intramurals Banquet, and officially named the participation trophy for her. Delta Delta Delta sorority was the winner of the Esther Hick Participation Trophy, and Tri-Delt Anna Bryan Perry was chosen outstanding player of the year. The points trophy went to Zeta Tau Alpha for the second year, in a row, as well as plaques for the shuffleboard, pingpong, tennis singles, and badminton singles tournatments. Tri-Delt won. the basketball tournament and the badminton doubles, and Pi Beta Phi won the volleyball tournament. The softball tournament was not over by press time. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR Rookie' of the year is Mary Lynn Chapman, assistant student director of intramurals for women. Emblems for participation in six or more tournaments went I to Bunny Bergin, Sally Lied, Ann | Quarle's, Barbara Harper, Pat \ L'Eeluse, and Gerrie Wegener, f Mrs. Sara Jernigan was the main speaker at the banquet, for which the theme was "Around,the World with Sports." Miss Hick, an outstanding and well-loved member of the faculty for eighteen years, is retiring after this year. She holds the bachelor's and master's degrees from Stetson, and has coached and taught in junior high schools. At Stetson, she has been adviser to the physical education majors club and a guiding star to intramurals. She also holds office in the national professional organization to which she belongs. ESTHER HICK A friend has said of her, "Her loyalty to her profession and to her students, as well as her sincerity and good sense of humor, have brought her the love and admiration of all 'who know her. She has done much to bring honor to her profession." Scabbard and Blade Adds Five Members Stetson's chapter of Scabbard and Blade, National Advanced ROTC honorary, initialed five new members on May 2. Those initiated were Keith H. Morgan, Pete M. Matteodo, Gary Luing, Robert J. LaiBle, and Paul V. Hendrix, all juniors. The group also elected new officers for the coming year. Marcus M. Cornelius was elected Captain President); Keith H. Morgan, 2nd Walter S. Farr, 1st Lt. (Vice- Presient); Keith H. Morgan, 2nd Lt. (Treasurer); and Michael C. Mohn, 1st Sgt. (Secretary). The Scabbard and Blade held a beach party at Daytona Beach, Sunday, May 1. Ten Seniors Get Graduate Aid •- To date, 10 Stetson seniors have received fellowships and assistantships to graduate schools all over the country. Harry Allen has accepted an assistantship in the department of Sociology at Vanderbilt University. Norman Fizette has also received an assistantship to Vanderbilt. Jere Hutcheson has received an assistantship in Theory at the Graduate School of Music at Louisiana State University. William Speck has won an NDEA Scholarship to Florida State University and Mary Ann Aiken has been awarded a two year Fellowship at Southern Illinois University. Uoanne Williamson has been offered a graduate scholarship at Oklahoma : University and an assistantship at the University of Texas. Lindley A. Wyman and Carol Howell have . won Southern Fellowships Fund Scholarships. Carol Howell has- also received a Wood- row - Wilson Fellowship. William Rhmehart accepted a U. S. Public Health Scholarship to the University of Wisconsin in preference to a Southern Fellowships Fund Scholarship and an assistantship t o Pennsylvania State University. If any senior has received an offer of graduate assistance and has not contacted Dr. Evans Johnson or Mrs. Peggy Cox, he is asked to do so.
