The ROTC Review STETSON UNIVERSITY MARCH 13, 1959 PAGE ONE Stetson Celebrates M y Week Candidates To Vie For Military Queen At Ball DOT BALLARD Phi Mu candidate for military queen is Dot Ballard. Dot is as 21 year old juniod from Coral Gables and is majoring in Psychology. Her activities on campus include membership in Phi Mu sorority, Canterbury Club, and Women's Council. Her plans for the future include graduation and then marriage. ELIZABETH FRIX Liz is a 19 year old sophomore from Miami and is being sponsored by Pi Beta Phi. Being one of the outstanding students on campus, she is social chairman of her sorority, a member of the Women's Council, Hatter Staff, B.S.U., N.E.A., and Phi Society. Liz plans to get a B.A. in English and then go on to graduate school. LINDA FULFORD Lida is being sponsored by Alpha Xi Delta and hails from Ocala. She is a freshman and is a member of the Westminister Fellowship and a Panhellenic Representative. Linda is an elementary education major and plans to teach upon graduation. FRANCES HANCOCK Tri Delt candidate is 20 year old Frances Hancock. Frances is a - sophomore elementary education major from Palatka, Fla. She is a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, Methodist Youth Fellow ship and F.E.A. Her plans are to finish school and teach. COOKIE RILEY Cookie is an eighteen year old freshman from St. Pete. She is a secretarial science major and is being sponsored by the Independent Women's Organization. Cookie was runner-up in the Pi Kapp Beauty Contest, and a candidate for the "Miss Hatter" and "Miss Basketball ■ Queen" contests. Most of you know her as a cheerleader. Her plans for the future are to graduate and to become a legal secretary. MARILYN WHITE Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia is Alpha Chi Omega candidate Marilyn White. Marilyn is an eighteen year old freshman and is majoring in English. Her activities include cheerleading, Hatter Beauty Contest, "Miss Stetson Basketball", and the Women's Council. Marilyn has interest in tumbling and piano and plans to continue her education here at Stetson. MAE FRANCES TAYLOR Zeta Tau Alpha candidate for military queen is Frances Taylor. Frances is an eighteen year old freshman from Cleveland, Tennessee. Her main interest at Stetson is her sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha. Frances is majoring in General Business and plans to continue her education at Stetson. One of these girls will be crowned Queen at Military Ball Seniors eceive Orders Frances Hancock Marilyn White U.S. Army orders for the seniors who will have completed all ROTC requirements at the end of this semester at Stetson University have been received at the ROTC Headquarters according- to Major Malcolm D. Brannen, PMST. The orders will assign the newly commissioned officers to their first duty station for either six months or two years. Duty for six months or less is called Active Duty for Training, and the two year assignment is called Active Duty. Whether six month or a two year assignment is received depends on the desires of the individuals jointly with the requirements of thes service. Following attendance at their branch school, the officers will be assigned to a unit for the remainder of their tour of duty. William R. Sullins, Vero Beach, Battle Group Commander, and William L. White, Jacksonville, Battle Group Executive Officer, who are both contemplating accepting commissions in the Regular U.S. Army will first report for duty in their U.S. Army Reserve status immediately after being graduated from the University on 31 May 1959. Both will go on duty 1 June 1959. However, Sullins will have a ten day period to reach his first duty station, San Pedro, California, whereas White must icport to Fort Campbell, Ky. 3 June 1959. White has been assigned to the oht-micai Corps but for two years aill seivu in a combat arm, Infantry, in the 101st Airborne Division. Sullins has been assigned (Continued on Page Four) Although the R.O.T.C. was es- ablished in 1916 under the National Defense Act of that year, its antecedents reach back to 1819 when Captain Alden Partridge founded the first institution of higher education which prescribed military training as part of its curriculum. 8TH YEAR AT STETSON This year Stetson celebrates the 8th anniversary of R.O.T.C. on this campus. The Corps, became a reality in 1950 under the leader- hip of Lt. Col. Isaac Frances Bonifay. The new unit shaped up right way, for in 1951 a Superior rat- ng was handed them in their first Formal Annual Inspection. Since then the unit has grown in size and t is still rated one of the best R.O.T.C. .units in the U.S. It has roven itself superior in summer amp and the ability of its commissioned officers. General Chorpening To Speak Here This coming Friday night, Scabbard and Blade shall present its nnual banquet in honor of the raduating seniors. It will be held t 7 P.M. in the Stetson Room of he Student Union Building. Guest peaker will be retired Maj. Gen. "laude H. Chorpening who is now esiding in DeLand with his wife rid daughter. Chorpening is a graduate of West Point and was a .lieutenant for seventeen years, erving in many responsible positions in engineering projects in Montana and Louisiana.
