These students were chosen on the basis of their excellence and sincerity in scholarship, leadership and participation in extra-curricular and academic activities, citizenship and service to the school, and most important, their promise of future usefulness to business and society. Election to Who's Who is regarded as the highest student-leadership honor on our campus. Students are nominated for Who's" IVho in the following manner. A joint student - faculty committee neets to select a list of prospective aominees, the numbr not to exceed iwice the final quota. This conr- nittee supplies the list of prospect- .ve- nominees, plus complete infer- nation about their student offices md activities, to the members of ;he Academic Council, the highest administrative group on the campus. Final selection of the Who's Who nominees is made by this commit- ;ee in terms of the aforementioned sriteria. . The number of students eligible for this honor varies each year in jeeordance with; the enrollment. This year Stetson submitted twenty nominees: seven from the Law School, and thirteen from Stetson ■ proper. ,-. . > ,.. ■ Nominees from bur campus are Carol Belcher, Joanne Bolton, Patricia Byrd, Harry Conner, Bill Drayton, Malcolm Glass, Jim Hodge, Jackie Hogue, Merrill Maguire, Dave Marcell, Mary Alice Emith. Roger Williams, and Jack Woodall. Those named from the Law School are Paul Barnard, Joseph Cardozo, Clinton Curtis, Harvey Delzer, John .VTcPherson, William Strode, and Peter Taylor. For the next consecutive thirteen weeks the Reporter will publish a ?oIumn entitled "Who's Who" consisting of personal interviews and personality sketches of each of the nominees from our campus. NOTICES The University Women's Club will hold its annual Christmas Tea in honor of ALL women students attending Stetson in the Parlors of Chaudoin from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 18th. Tournament TEAMS TIE FOR THIRD MILLSAPS CONTEST NEXT Yule Log Lighting Set For Sunday Julia Britt Steanson Sunday night, December 15, at 9:15 P.M.. the Student Christian Association of Stetson University will sponsor the lighting of the Yule Log in Allen Hall. This Stetson Christmas tradition is a direct descendant of the old English and Scottish custom of lighting the largest available log at the beginning of the Christmas season and celebrating until it burned away. The Yule Log Ceremony Ras been practiced for centuries in almost every Christian land, and each part of the ceremony has an allegorical meaning based on ancient superstitions. Each- guest, as he enters, will be given a sprig of green to symbolize the woes of the past year. As the Yule Log Procession passes, he is to touch the log with -the sprig to ward off evil spirits. Christmas Caroling Party, Student Lounge, SUB, 9:43 P.M. « Joanne Bolton To Represent Stetson In Bowl Miss Joanne Bolton, a senior in the Stetson University School of Music, will represent the uni- rsity in the Holiday Bowl Queen for the football game between Hillsdale College in Michigan and Pittsburg State College of Kansas. The game will be in Stewart Field, Saturday, December 21, St. Petersburg', and will be televised by the Columbia Broadcasting System over 107 statons . coast to coast. The game will decide the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics championship. The NAIA has a membership of 465 small colleges including Stetson. The teams were selected by a special committee of the association and is the, second championship game. The St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and the Holiday Bowl Committee hope to make the contest an annual affair on the Suncoast. A graduate of St. Petersburg Senior High, Joanne attended St. Petersburg Junior College for a year before enrolling at Stetson where she is majoring in history and is planning a teaching career. A brother. Bill, is a senior at the University of Florida and another brother, Bob, has just completed his service requirements and plans to enter college in January. Her father is a printer with (Continued on Page Seven) Stetson University's Debate teams tied themselves for third place at the Florida Junior Debate' Tournament held last weekend at the University of Florida. Stetson Affirmative team number 8 took second place in affirmative argument for the tournament. The -University of Miami took first place and Florida State University captured the second place spot. The only defeat that the Miami team suffered came at the hands of the Stetson Affirmative team number One. Members of the Stetson affirmative were: Team One, Grant Cole and Arthur Stone; Team Eight, John Robert Moore and Patti Lamar. Representing Stetson on the negative were; Team One,. Wes Johnson and Ann Severance, and Team Eight, Joe Crankshaw and Cherry Dell. This year's debate topic is; Resolved: That membership in a labor organization as a condition of employment should be illegal. Represented in the Junior Tournament were: FSU, Miami U of Fla., Mercer; St. Petersburg- Junior College, Pensacola Junior College and Stetson. With nearly all of its members in the experienced class the Stetson Debate squad is making plans to attend the Millsaps Speech Contests at Millsaps College in January. See story, page 8 ADVANCED SUMMER PROGRAM MEETS LEADERSHIP DEMANDS Messiah Presentation Tonight A summer preparatory program at Stetson which will enable sup- -npe.iS 0} sjoiunf joouos q.8iq ,io;.i9 ate from college one year early has just been announced by Dr. J. Ollie Edmunds, president of the University. Carefully selected high school students who have fininshed three years of college preparatory courses will be admitted to a special - eight-weeks summer program on the DeLand campus, Dr. Edmunds said. The group will live in University residence halls and will concentrate on mathematics, English, and basic skills necessary to exceptional achievement in college. Thus, the high school juniors who complete the course with distinction may be admitted to Stetson or another college in September, 19133, skipping their senior year in high school. Also .eligible for the summer program will be able high school seniors who wish to improve their chances for advanced standing in collegCi The program will be limited to 100 students from Florida and the Southeast. Financial aid will be availabel for those who need it. "This program is Stetson's first response to the increased demand of the nation for leadership and 'high -ability manpower' in all fields," Dr. Edmunds said. The future of our country depends upon the human leadership available. The earlier we can discover potential leaders and encourage them to train for the exacting demands of the future, the better we shall serve the cause of freedom." Dr. Edmunds is a member of President Eisenhower's Committee for Scientists and Engineers and is president of the Association of American Colleges.
