hups Cfje teteon Reporter 'Florida's Oldest College Newspaper" 72nd Year No. 8 THE STETSON REPORTER Friday November J4, 1958 University Plans Gigantic Weekend Dorsey's Band To Appear At Armory Dec. 13 > The Fabulous Dorsey Band will be the first of the name bands to visit the Stetson campus. The Tommy Dorsey group will stage an hour-long concert from four to five on the afternoon of December 13, and a three hour dance that night. The SGA sponsored concert will be free to students, while the dance tickets will cost $3 a couple. * The dance will be in the Armory from 9:00 till 12:00 p.m. sponsored by a special Dance Committee under the direction of Bob Sullins. The SGA will pay $1,000 for the concert and the Dance Committee will raise the $650 for the dance by ticket sales. SGA plans to sponsor other such concerts of well known performers later in the school year, according to Walter Prather, social vice president. FEA Faces Busy Weekend This weekend is a busy one for education majors. On Friday evn- ning, Nov 14, we will have an Assembly for Educators as part of our Diamond Jubilee. It wil be held in Elizabeth Hall at 8:00 p.m. and will feature a panel discussion: Florida Education in a Changing Age. Ray V. Sowers will be the moderator. The panelists are: Rober M. Strozier, President of Florida State University; Kenneth R. Williams, President of the Central Florida Junior College and Vice-President of the Florida Association of Junior Colleges; Ed Henderson, Executive Secretary of the Florida Education Association; and H. Franklin Williams who is Vice-President for Community Relations at the Uni- veristy of Miami. On Saturday, November 15, at 8:30 a.m. the State S.F.E.A. will have its General Session with an address, "The Letter You Write". This meeting and others will be held at the Princess Issena Hotel at Daytona Beach. At 9:30 group discussions will be held on the following subjects: 1. Every Member an Active Member, 2. Growth through Professional Organiza- :on, and 3. The observance will overflow the campus into the City of DeLand. Leadership in planning for the Diamond Jubilee Convocation and Homecoming has been assumed by townspeople—from the mayor to the smallest store-owner. Earl W. Brown, who for a half century has been developing and staging public events across the nation, has served as general chairman. His keen foresight in arranging this program has already been recognized publicly by Dr. J. Ollie Edmunds, president of the university. The vision in planning the program has cause the spirit of more than three-quarters of a century age when Henry A. DeLand, pf Fairport, N, Y., and a closely-knit band of settlers established the city and the university as companion projects to provide comfortable living in a community of culture under the Florida sun. This same spirit has been evident in the planning for this week's convocation and homecoming program. General Chairman Brown has given the credit for the program to the members of his steering committee—the chairme nof the various groups whose work now has a great celebration in readiness. Members of the steering committee include Mayor R. E. Lee, T. H. Scovell, president of the DeLand Chamber of Commerce; J. Phil Wahle, Uriel Blount, Jr., John R. Godbee, Walter E. Smith, Jr., Orlando; B. Fred Grantham, James P. West, Mrs. Arthur Lane, Mrs. Hugh West, Harry C. Garwood, J. Winston Pearce, Francis P. Whitehair, George W. Marks, H. W. Hurt and Doyle E. Carlton. Since early in the week the city has assumed a festive atmosphere with elaborate street decorations provided by the City of DeLand, "no vacancy' 'signs at the hotels and motels, and downtown show windows displaying items from De- Land's and Stetson's early days as reminders of the week-end program. Mayor Lee and Chamber of Commerce President Scovell have asked every person in DeLand to be a committee of one to work with the student body.and faculty at the University in extending a warm and sincere welcome to visitors.
