PRESIDENT Mrs. Virginia Giffin, professor of speech at Stetson University, has just returned from Tallahassee where she was elected province president of Alpha Xi Delta sorority. Mrs. Giffin, serving as president of Province 4 by appointment, will continue in that office for two years. Nine active chapters and 18 alumni chapters from nine states were a- mong the 12S delegates at the meeting. The Stetson chapter was represented by nine members. June Krause Jones, of Atlanta, a Stetson graduate, was named province treasurer. Another Stetson graduate, Lydin Theurer, of Miami, also a Stetson graduate, was province banquet speaker. Mrs. Mikell is a past national vice-president, j YWA HOLD STATE MEET AT STETSON The Young Women's Association of tlie Baptist Church will hold its State Convention here on Stetson's campus this weekend, in Allen Hall. Theme of the conference will be ''Such Love Demands." The meetings are open to everyone, according to announcements from the Stetson YWA. First event on the agenda will be a' general assembly afc the First Baptist Church in De- Land, at 7:30 p. m„ followed by a party at Allen Hall, at 0:15. Saturday will feature meetings in tlie morning at the church and a recreational assembly that afternoon a: DeLeon Springs, with a supper being served at 6. At 7:30 p. m. the Reverend James Stertz will be tho guest speaker at the closing assembly. Delegates and members will attend church iu a body on Sunday. Reporter Wins Honorable Mention > i h: The Stetson REPORTER was a- warded honorable mention last week in tlie eighth annual College Newspaper Contest on Safe Driving which is sponsored by Lumbermen's Mutual Casualty Company of Chicago, Illinois. Along with the honorable mention, the editor of the paper was awarded a certificate of Editorial Excellence. Some three hundred colleges and universities in the United States participated in the contest. Winners in the non-daily class, the group in which the REPORTER competed were: first prize, The Baronette of the College of Steubenville, Steubenville, Ohio; second prize, The Bulletin of the Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, Kansas; and third prize went to the Trinitonian of Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas. Pi Phis Tops In Scholarship Pi Beta Phi sorority led all fraternity groups on the Stetson University campus in' scholarship for the fall semester, it was disclosed today in grade ratios released by the office of the registrar. The Pi Phis had a ratio of 1.669 as compared with the all university average of 1.281. Second was Alpha Xi Delta with 1.534. A year ago Alpha Xi led with 1.652, followed by Delta Delta Detal with 1.607. The women's totals were 1.401 this year, down from 1.436 last. The men's average for the fall term was 1.200, down from 1.234 last year. Pi Kappa Phi led the men's fraternity with 1.501. They also led last year with 1.472. Lambda Chi Alpha was second with 1.201. Last year Sigma Phi Epsilon was second with 1.275. Fraternity men and women made higher grades than non-fraternity men and women. Tlie Greeks had an average of 1.300. .033 above the non- Greeks. RUNOFFS COMPLETE The University Party completed its selection of candidates last Wednesday in a special runoff for the vice- president's post. Elected to fill out the already announced UP slate were: Mary Alice Smith, nominee for secretary, and Peggy Livingston for the vice-presidential spot. Miss Smith was elected by a margin of ten votes over her nearest opponent, in tiie Tuesday election, while Miss Livingston and Mr. Mc- lin went down to a 210-210 deadlock with several persons not voting. SIG EP HOLDS DISTRICT MEET HERE Florida, Beta Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity will be the host chapter of the annual District Twelve Leadership Training School this weekend. Visiting the campus for the weekend besides the representatives of the six district chapters will be the new District Governor Bonnie I. Smith and several prominent alumni. , District Twelve consists of the State of Florida and has as members the following university chapters: University of Florida, the University of Miami, The University of Tampa, Florida State University, Florida Southern, and Stetson University. Special guests of the District school will be a petitioning local from Val- dosta State Teacher's College in Val- dosta, Georgia. Highpoint of the 'District School will be the formal banquet which will be held at the Chimney Corners Restaurant. The Training School, itself, will meet in the Episcopal Church. Planning and coordinating the event is George Lux, past vice- pi esident of Florida Beta' Chapter.
