Nominations Today, 10a.m. Students Compete For Four-Year Scholarships Here Twenty or more seniors from Florida high schools will compete tomorrow, April 5, at Stetson for five four-year University Scholarships, worth $1700 each, Dr. John V. Vaughen, chairman of the Scholarships Awards committee announced this week. High schools at such distant points as Miami and Tallahassee and many" in between these points, will send representatives. The contestants have been invited by the University to arrive the day before examination and get their first taste of University life by spending the night in the dormitories. The examination begins at 9 a. m., tomorrow and continues until noon when those participating will be guests of the University at dinner. In the evening, they will be given tickets for the play "Holiday" at the Stover Theatre. These awards were established in 1950. Five were selected in that year and five more the following year. The plan for the future is to have twenty students from Florida .enjoying these scholarships in the University at all times. The purpose is to reward academic excellence and to aid worthy high school students who otherwise might not be able to obtain a higher education. The awards are renewable semi-annually for the four years provided the recipient continues to demonstrate outstanding ability, scholastic achievement and contribution to life on the campus. Funds for these scholarships were made available by friends of Stetson including: Carrie F. Conrad, Mary S. Grozer, Mary E. Gun- (Continued on Page Two) Open Annual Hays Contest At Stetson The Walter L. Hays contest, an address on "Free Enterprise and the American Way of Life" is now open to all regularly enrolled students at Stetson University. They should be about 1500 words and be submitted to a Stetson committee on or before May 10. The winner will deliver the oration in chapel May 16. Awards of $200 for first prize and $100 for second prize will be made at commencement. "The American Way of Life" is the privilege of the individual to live where and how he pleases; work, play and worship and compete with others in business and professional life. The American College Dictionary defines "Free Enterprise" as "The doctrine or practice of a minimum of government control of private business and industry." *' The Stetson committee will be composed of Dr. Irving C. Stover, Dr. Byron Gibson and Dr. Gilbert Lycan. President J. Ollie Edmunds is to be ex-officio chairman of this committee. Revival Team Travels Another of Stetson's talented youth revival teams will be in Palatka this weekend, at the First Baptist Church. The preacher will be Dick Flood, the songleader Bobby Sawyer, and the recreation and seminar leader Jackie Rich. At 2:00 Friday afternoon, the team will put on a chapel program at the Palatka High School with the church services beginning Friday night. Visitation, sou] wining, and counciling will be the goals of the Stetson team. Last Traveling Art Exhibition Of Season Here The last large traveling exhibition of the winter art displays is now on exhibition at- the Elizabeth Hall gallery until April 15. Prize winning pictures from the annual exhibition of the Florida Federation of Art and honorable mentions are included from 1951 exhibition of 110 paintings. The Florida Federation of Art celebrates its 25th anniversary as an organization this year. It serves to unite all art organizations in the state of Florida and its annual exhibition of oils, water colors and prints represents the best of student and professional work done during the past year. Stetson University is a member of the organization. In connection with the annual Federation of Art exhibition, selected works of Chester Tingler will remain in the color section. Faculty and student displays will follow to complete the exhibition calender at Stetson. Co-Op Students Sought Stetson students who know of high school seniors in their home towns who .would like to work their way through college with the Cooperative Education department are advised to give the names and addresses to E. B. Crim, director of the Stetson Cooperative department. NOTICE Easter holiday vacation for Stetson students will officially begin at 6 p. m., Wednesday, April 9. Classes will resume again at 8 a. m. Wednesday, April 16. Five Offices Open; Two Active Parties Vie For Student Government Positions This morning at. 10 there will be a Student Government Association meeting in chapel. At this time nominations for the Student Government officers will be made. Applications for the positions on student publications must be in the Office of the Dean of the University by sfcthis afternoon. These applications are subject to the approval of the academic council. Aspirants are asked to note the following qualifications: Article III Section 2. Candidates for all Association offices shall not be on academic probation. A candidate's academic average shall be determined by the Registrar. Section 3. Qualifications for President and Vice-President, candidates shall be members of the incoming senior class, eligible for graduation by August and no sooner than May and shall have been in residence at the University for a period of one academic year, including the period in which they are candidates prior to the date of the general election. The President shall not hold any other office- in any campus-associated organization. Section 4. Qualifications for the Social Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary: a candidate shall be a member of either the incoming junior or senior class and shall have been in residence at the University for a period of one academic year, including the period in which they become candidates, prior to the date .of the general election. Virginia Davis Virginia Davis To Represent Lambda Chi In Contest By ROS KENNA The Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity is proud to announce that Virginia Davis will represent the fraternity in the Cresent Girl contest to be held at the national fraternity assembly in New York, in June of this year. The brown eyed coed has had many honors for her beauty. She is a sophomore at Stetson and lives in Tampa, Fla. with her parents?- At present she is engaged as the costume director for the 1952 Alpha Xi show. Shown above with Deari L. A. Glee Club Plans Easter Cantata The came and date of the pre-1 Easter cantata to he presented by the Stetson Glee Club travel squad has been announced by Conductor Harold M. Giffin. "The Last Words of Christ," a sacred cantata, will be given at 3 p. m. Sunday, April 6, in Elizabeth Hall on the Stetson University campus. It was last given in 1950. This is usually alternated with "The Crucifixion" and both sacred cantatas have drawn large crowds of music lovers from Central Florida. The introduction is a soprano solo this spring. "Oh all ye who travel upon the highway, hearken to me, and behold me: was e'er sorrow like unto my sorrow?" The seven immortal words of the Christ follow. Fifteen Students Make Honor Roll Fifteen students from the De- Land area were listed on the semester honor roll at Stetson University. Seniors are: Lillian Eurle- son Demarest, Robert E. Kim- broug'h, Susan Jeanne Wilson; juniors: M. Ethel Getman, Walter Charles Grady, Rachel Bryant Perry, Norman Allen Tharp, Winifred E. Tompkins; sophomores: Edith Baker, Robert Harry Breyfogle, Lake Helen; Ann Russell, Edna Miller Smiley, William Franklin Warden; freshman: James Allen Dator, and Louise Farris DeLay. Rachel Perry. Norman Tharp and Robert Kimbrough are also on the Dean's list. Harvey, Freund Judge Augustine Art Exhibition Prof. Edith Harvey, head of the Art Department of Stetson University, Mr. Louis Freund, artist in residence at the University, and Airs. Freund, will journey to St. Augustine next Saturday where they will judge the April exhibition of the St. Augustine Art Association. The three judges will be. guests at a reception and luncheon given in their honor by members of the association.
