The building is a gift from the Florida Baptists through the efforts of Dr. John Maguire, executive secretary of the Florida Baptist Convention, and Dr. J. Harrison Griffin, secretary, of the Department of Christian Education. The program (began with the singing of the Doxology led by the BSU chorister, Jack Coldiron. Dean Garwood spoke on the topic, "Do Dreams Come True?" He said that the new building would be the busiest on campus with meeting rooms and offices for all religious organizations represented at Stetson and arrangements for audio-visual and broadcasting facilities. The new Religious Center will be known as the William Sims Allen Memorial Religious Center Building. Dr. Maguire read a telegram from Dr. Allen expressing his appreciation for the honor given him in the naming of the new building and his joy in knowing that "our Stetson goes forward for Christ in education.'' The ceremony ended with groundbreaking by Dr. Maguire. Bill Mc- Cammon was master of ceremonies. Special guests included Miss Lola Miller, Dr. John Maguire, Dr. Warren S. Gordis, Dr. J. Harrison Griffin, Dean Garwood and Rev. R. Grady Snowden. The corner-stone laying will be held during the Florida Baptist Assembly on June 13. Cbmjpletion date has been set for September 30. JEFF CLARK TO WED MISS ELOISE NEWELL TODAY AT 4:30 P.M. Students, faculty inembers and town friends are invited to the wedding of Miss Eloise Newell and Mr. Jeff Clark at 4:30 p.m. today in the First Baptist Church. Dr. R. E. Clark, father of the bridegroom, will perform the ceremony. Following the wedding, a reception will be held in Chaudoin parlors. No formal invitations are being sent. Campus Cutie This Week ?'• Clemmons Takes Coaching Job At Leon High School Ben Clemmons, former football line coach and head basketball coach at Stetson, has taken over the head coaching duties at Leon High school. Clemmons will report for duty next August. Clemmons is a native of Tallahassee and for over a decade was head basketball, baseball and line football coach under Brady Cowell. He resigned last year when the athletic policy of the university was. changed. Since that time he has been operating a business in Tallahassee. While attending the University of Florida in the late twenties Clemmons was one of the most outstanding all-round athletes ever to participate in-Florida sports. He has been named as center on the all time Gator all star football team. Applications Still Being Received For Reporter and Hatter Jobs By TED GRISSETT The rules and Procedure Committee of the Student Government Association, headed by Mack Cleveland, ruled Harry Hinckley ineligible for election as student body president Monday afternoon. Hinckley was ruled ineligible on Section 3, Article 3 of the Student Government constitution. This section states that-a candidate for president must be eligible for graduation no sooner than May nor later than August of the year in which he is to serve. Hinckley is eligible to .graduate in June or fAugitst ofi (hist year. Chairman Cleveland recommended to Student Body President George Everett that nominations be reopened this Friday for president in order to allow the Independent Party to put up a candidate for this office. At press time the Reporter was unable to contact a spokesman for the Independent Party in order to find their reaction to the ruling of the committee. Another unknown point was brought to light when the Faculty Publications Committee met Tuesday afternoon to approve candidates for heads of the student publications. There were two candi dates for editor of the Hatter, Jeanne Van Dorn and Gloria Kline. For business manager of the Reporter, two men were approved and placed on the ballot, Homer Cooksey, present manager, and BUI Towne, unsuccessful candidate for editor of the Reporter last year. Cooksey was appointed to the job at the beginning of the spring quarter to succeed James Michael. There were no candidates for the position of business manager of the Hatter. This position and that of editor of the Reporter have been kept open. Applications will be received in Dean Garwood's office for these positions until further notice. Richard Kale was the only applicant for editor of the Quarterly. He was approved and will be placed on the ballot for ratification. Parties Provide Qualified Candidates For Student Offices; Campaigns Begin Stuart, Florida, is the home of our Campus Cutie this week. Jsan Dare is her name but everyone around the campus calls her "Jinx." She is majoring in elementary education arid is a freshman at the University. Jinx is 18 years old, has blond hair and brown eyes. She is 5 feet, 2 inches tail and weighs 108. Jinx is a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. By JUNE COSSIN Campaign speeches, cheers, and 1 voiced opinions have already begun to circulate on the Stetson campus and we are once again on our merry way—this time for the excitement that comes and goes with the annual student body elections. In order that each Stetson student might have the chance to know a little more about the candidates they have chosen to run for office, we are taking this opportunity to give a thumbnail sketch of each candidate. Ruth Mary Dickson and Jimmie Nell Fleming are the two promising candidates for the office of vice- president. Ruth Mary is a charming miss, bom February 26, 1931 in Adel, Georgia. She is a member of tho junior class and majoring in sociology. Ruth Mary's hobby is people. When asked if she had any statement for the press, Ruth Mary declared: "I am grateful to the Stetson Party for selecting me as their candidate for vice-president of the Student Body. If privileged to be the majority choice in i this election, I intend to fulfill my responsibilities of this office and ! to the entire student body to the | best of my ability." i Another charming candidate hails .' from Orlando—her name is Jimmie . Noll Fleming. Jimmie Nell was born February 27, 1930. She is 'now a junior and majoring in religious education. As a hobby, Jimmie Nell finds collecting miniature pitchers quite interesting. In answer to the same question concerning a statement, Jimmie Nell says: "The most important element in this election is not the individual candidates concerned, nor the party they represent, but the future of Stetson. "Any of those elected will realize their responsibilities, and show their loyalty to the student body of Stetson." Running for secretary of the Stetson student body are Betty Land and Virginialee Culbreth. Betty Land is a bundle of personality from Orlando, whose hobby it is to collect records of everything from "The Volga Boatman" to "Kiss Me Kate." She is majoring in biology and is a member of the junior class, Betty was born May 13, 1929. Another candidate well known for her dry wit and wonderful sense of humor is Virginialee Culbreth. Okeechobee is Virginia's hometown. She is a junior in law school, her major being law, and she celebrates her birthday on March 3. Virginialee expressed her belief in democracy with the following statement: "This is not just an election concerning ten people—the candidates, this is an election concerning all of us—the students. W!e each have one vote to contribute to the future of Stetson. Let's use it!'' Jack Griffin and Roger Dancz are the candidates for the office of social vice-president. Jack was born October 18. 1928 in Wildwood, N. J., but is sew making his home in the sunny south—Ft. Lauderdale. Jack is a sophomore, majoring in business administration with photography taking up a great deal of his spare time as a hobby. When asked to state his platform, Jack stated: "I will do my best to give the students more and better Planned activity." "I build my platform on one thing—to do the best of my ability in fulfilling the expectations of this office." These are the words of Roger Dancz, who is also a candidate for the office of social vice- president. Roger is from Ludington, Michigan, is a music education major, was born May 25, 1930, is a member of the sophomore class. Roger's hobby is mastering music. For the office of treasurer we have two students from Jacksonville—Johnny Hodges and Kenneth Hansen. A junior, majoring in law, and a candidate for treasurer, Johnny states: "The money in the student treasury belongs to the student body. It is derived ultimately from each and every student and I certainly believe that the wishes of all students should govern the spending of their money. To this end I would exert whatever influence I might have towards its use." Johnny was born June 17, 1925 and has a hobby, that "strike-happy" game—bowling. Kenneth Hansen, a naturalist at heart, has as his hobby photography and biological collections. Kenneth was born October 20, 1928. His major is religious education. Kenneth also expressed his belief in democracy with the following statement: "I hope that every student expresses his democratic duty by vol ing iri the coming election. Nothing can better further the ideals of democracy than each individual doing his part.'' Here you have it, a brief idea of what each candidate is like. There's no excuse for not voting. Let's all do our share in bettering campus politics!
