Student Body Meeting Friday ■ To' Discuss■. Semester System A meeting of the Student Government Association will be held Friday morning-. December 3, at 10 o'clock in. the Elizabeth.Hall chapel President Frederick Owen has announced. ' - ■ Owen stated that he has been asked to call tile meeting by various student groups on campus who wish to protest the proposed switch from the'.quarter system to the semester system advocated by the administration recenl>y. The president pointed,out that this is not a "protest meeting" 1jut is rather a meeting to sample the student opinion as to the suggested change. During the meeting these, groups, in addition to discussing the chprige. are expected to pass out ballots asking the students for their opinion.of the change. Also" scheduled for discussion will be plans for a huge Christmas tree which will be erected in front of Elizabeth Hall. Owen has appointed Jack Fountain as chairman of. the Christmas Tree arrangements committee. ./" Jack is" expected to announce plans for a brilliant tree decoration and a program of music possibly featuring the Stetson Glee Club for some night before school is out for the holidays. Brings asses, otter: Vacation As of late, there has been much talk of adopting the Semester System here at Stetson. The majority of colleges and universities operate under the Semester System. Why 'shouldn't we ?". I'll answer this from the standpoint, of the students,: and not-the faculty. When the time for decision is at hand, we'll find out what they think about it. .. Under the Semester System, we are likely to be confronted with Saturday classes. Exasperating? Fa tiguing! We-both need and.enjoy the three vacations we now have each school year. . Under the Semester S;steni .wf:vwou.rd have only two vacations. That will never do! We wou'd be carrying five subjects per semester/ holding class in some three days a week, in others, two days a week.- Hence an irregular and confused schedule. •-'■■' What next? The next is horrible. You may scream! After Christmas vacation, we would return riot to begin a new semester. We would return to take our final examinations for the Fall Semester. So take that. .. No more; needs to be said. If the Semester System is adopted, we will grin and bear it. . But I find it difficult to smile under such circumstances. The titne for our decision is at hand, let's voice our sentiments at the student body meeting Friday. I, for oije, will have much to say against it. At present, Pfui! Roy Fry© STETSON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA GIVES FIRST CONCERT OF SEASON The Stetson Symphony Orchestras Frances Buxton, conductor, was heard in its first concert of the. season Thursday, December 2, at 8 p.m. in Elizabeth Hall auditorium. The major work of the evening was the Beethoven Symphony No. 3, the "Eroica". Following its tradition, the orchestra's Thursday night program included a group of works of American composers. Fop the first time in a number of years, the string Orchestra of the Stetson Symphony was heard. It performed the "Christmas Concerto" (Concerto Grosse No.^8) of Corelli. written for the night of the Nativity in 1712. Solo parts of this concerto were played by William Stark and Dorothy Flory, violinists, and Eleanor Leek, celr list. The program opened with "Komm, Susser Tod" (Come Sweet Death) by Bach, orchestrated by Stokowski, and also included three dances from' the opera "The Bartered Bride" by Smetana. Dr. Arjona Writes : Outstanding' Text A textbook written by Dr. Doris King Arjona, professor of Spanish at Stetson University, has been chosen as one of the "outstanding textbooks of the year" by the textbook clinic of the American. Institute of Graphic Arts. It was selected from among textbooks submitted by. publishers in the United States and Canada. '; Dr. Arjona's book,, ''Fronteras", is a first-year course in Spanish, published by Scott; Foreman- and Company. Dr. Arjona was' given leave of absence from Stetson for a part of last year to complete her book. She is also author of other outstanding texts in the Spanish language. •■ ■ ... Thomas And Chapman Law Clubs Plan ToRevive Annual" "Law Day" For April The weekly argumentation presented by the Thomas 'ikad Chapman Law Clubs at the Stetson College of Law featured Margaret Berg and Paul Stewart both Freshmen against Bert Davenport and William Singleton. J. R. Durden was the presiding officer for the meeting. At the meeting Dean L. A. Has- lup stated that plans are being made for the holding of Law Day, an annual event in April, when the two contestants with the highest argumentation score from each law club will compete for the Dean's cup and other prizes. "Law Day", said Dean Halsup, "Will be held each year." Distributes Baskets For Mission Projects Ten baskets of food were distributed to the. jail, prison and old folks home by the Young Women's Auxiliary last week as part of their community mission project for November. . - Six baskets were taken to the jail during the regular Sunday mission program which were filled with fruit, candy, cookies and other food. The others were taken to the -srkon and old folks home to be distributed by the attendants. . "I REMEMBER MAMA" OPENS THREE DAY RUN DECEMBER 9 By BARBARA BRUNDAGE On Thursday night at 8:00 o'clock the curtain goes' up on the second Little Theatre production'pf the year, "1 Remember Mama," by John van Druten, which is scheduled for a three day run. The story, told in a series of flash-backs, is centered around mama (Marilou Horton) : her trials, her laughs, and her family as remembered by the eldest daughter Katrin (Phyllis Ballentine). Ollie Edmunds, president of Stetson University, Dr, Win.1 McEinry, head of the department Of English, and Dr, Ray V. Sowers, director of field services, attended the annual meeting of the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools iri Memphis, Tenn., November 28 through December 2. for lack of funds. German Club Ships Packages Overseas- A welcome Christmas " present including forty-five packages of clothing and two C.A.R.E. food cartons was sent to the German students at the University of Goet- tingen, Germany by Der Deutsche Verin and the German classes of Mrs. John V. Vaughen, faculty advisor of the German club. The food and clothing will be distributed among students in particular need by Dr. Arnold Eucken, head of. the Department of Science, Dr. Vaughen studied with Dr. Eucken at Breslau. Germany. Money to pay for the food parcels was collected through student and faculty donations. Money is still being received to defray the $31 postage charge for the shipments. The theft of $3 from the collection jar at Homecoming was replaced by a, faculty member, and the shipments were not held up Debaters Plan Non-Decision Match At New Business School Saturday Fifty six debaters, which represent six different colleges and Universities throughout the South, will participate in a pre-season; non-decision debate tournament here Saturday December 4. Debaters are scheduled to meet in the business school's building where the question of "Federal Aid to Education" will be bandied about for four rounds. Richard C. Brand, Professor of Speech and director of forensic activities at Stetson, said that the purpose of the debate was to give each member an opportunity to get acquainted and to exchange ideas with other southern debaters. The various schools represented expected are: Florida, 13;. Miami, 18; Florida Southern, 6; f Mercer, 5; Palm Beach Junior College, 6; and Stetson, .8.
