Students And Chapel Services

Wc had an idea several months ago which has been bothering
lis but only recently have wc had facts to substantiate it.
First proof that our idea had possibilities came from an editorial published in the Highland Comity News. The editorial was
written in gratitude to John C. Howell, Stetson Ministerial student,
for services rendered as pastor of thc First Baptist Church of
Sebring.
Wc were particularly interested in this paragraph of the editorial which read, '". . . We have been impressed with his studied
preparation of his sermons, the air of calm assurance with which
he spoke, the manner in which he carried out the service.''
Tf Howell can please the people of Sebring surely he could
please the students of Stetson.
Our idea received another big boost when Herb Dudley, Stetson's nat;onally famous diamond-ball star, stood proudly before
classmates in Chapel services Monday morning and told how he
became a Christian.
In simple, sincere, everyday words Herb made more people
want to be Christians than most preachers do in months. No
chapel speaker that ever spoke in tlie Elizabeth Flail has had/more
respect from an audience than did Herb Dudly Monday.
Herb had a story to tell and told it straight from the shoulder
and the people wore impressed. They listened for everv word and
when he finished, it made you feel nice and clean inside. It is
good to say you know a swell guy like Dudley.
"I'm not an ordained pastor or even a ministerial student,"
Dudley tcld the students. Maybe he isn't, but he should.
We don't mean to say that Howell and Dudley are the only
examples we have . . . Wallace Webb, Wallace "Register, Bob
Pinder, Roland Barrington, Bryon Brasington and many more
are equally representative.
To get to the point, our idea is, "Why not let the students play
a more active part in chapel services?" Thc idea sounds logical
to us. It would be good experience for the students; it would
better acquaint the students; and last, the students prefer students
and less announcements, book salesmen and the like.
A\ e realize that planning chapel services every dav is too
much for any one person. Why-not give the students a chance to
exercise some of their ideas?

DR. LEAVELL TO LEAD CAMPUS'
FIVE-DAY RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES

xA. group of seventeen visiting men and women under the
leadership of'Dr. Frank II. Leavell, head of the department of
student work of the Southern Baptist Convention, will visit the
Stetson campus next Monday through Friday to lead in Religious
Focus Week activities with its theme this year—Maximum Christianity. |
These laymen and religious workers have for their purpose
to make a definite application of Christianity to every phase of
college life.
The program for the Avcek will start with class visitation bv
thc team members .Monday morning, and in the chapel period Dr.
Leavell will speak on the Focus Week theme.
At each chapel period during the week there will be student
leaders presiding and leading thcx singing as well as the presentation of special musical numbers by student soloists ..and the Stetson Glee Club.
One highlight of Focus Week will be a campus Party at 9:00
-Monday night. This party will be under the direction of the Hospitality Committee of the general student Focus Week committee
and will offer an opportunity for the students to join in a period
of fun and fellowship with the visiting team members.
At 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, seminars will be
held which arc directed piimarily to presenting experienced advice
relative to family life after college days.
