All joined in making Christmas tree decorations • and popping popcorn. Sunday night the Alpha Xi's and Lambda Chi's got together again for an evening of Christmas caroling. The. group enjoyed hot chocolate in the Alpha Xi apartment afterwards. We are very proud of Sharon Estes, Nina Pylkas, Joanne Cheshire, and Mary Prichard, who were tapped for Phi Society. Our congratulations also go to Carole Giffin, Sarah Ash- craft, and Anne Stephens, who were tapped for Kappa Delta Pi, the Education Honorary. We would like to give special recognition to Linda Gregory, Senior, who was selected for Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. Best wishes go to those who were pinned last month: Nina Pylkas and Jim Thompson; Judith Wright and Mike Abies. A miscellaneous Wedding Shower was given in honor of Linda Gregory last Wednesday night. Linda will be married during Christmas vacation. Sunday, ten Alpha Xi's cooperated with the Sigma Nu's in their annual visit to the Children's Home. Tuesday we will 'be playing for first place in the basketball tournament. The Alpha Xi's have been undefeated so far. DELTA DELTA DELTA Last weekend Tri Deltas joined the Sigma Nus in their annual Christmas program at the Crippled Children's Home in Umatilla. Monday afternoon Tri Delta held'its annual Apple Polishing Party. Members of the faculty came to the apartment for ap-. pie'pie and coffee. Thanks go to' Gwyrine Williams who was in charge of ,the arrangements. Wednesday afternoon the pledges gave the actives a surprise Christmas party. Joyce Hewitt was Santa. Everyone had a.good time! Given Ndtfl Coverage The American Broadcasting Company will carry 55 minutes of excerpts of Stetson's Concert Choir's presentation of the "Messiah" by Handel, on a coast to coast hook-up this Saturday afternoon, December 19, from 1 until 4:55 p.m. This is being done through radio station WJBS and its president Ralph Hatcher. The "Messiah" was presented In two ' performances this past weekend, at which time a tape recording was made. This tape has now been edited by Harold M. Giffin, professor of voice in the School of Music and director of the production, and has been sent to New York for the coast to coast broadcast. PRINCIPALS AT. The selection of students for this honor is an annual tradition, thirty-one years old, at Stetson and other colleges. The candidates for the Stetson selection are nominated by a screening committee composed of the Dean 'of Students, the Dean of Men, the Dean of Women, the Director of Religious Activities, the Student Government President; "the president of Omicron Delta Kappa men's honorary and the president of Mortar Board women's honorary. SELECT LIST The functions of this screening committee is to select a list of prospective nominees, the number not to exceed twice the final quota, and to supply complete information about their student offices and activities and a list of nominpes to the student affairs committee. The student affairs committee considers each nominee and votes to select the most outstanding of those competing. The criteria considered by the committee are: —excelencie and sincerity in scholarship; Orchestra, Choir Spread Holiday Joy With Music By GLORIA HUNTER "There's a song in the air." This first line of a Christmas hymn is a perfect description for this season of the year. Once again it is Christmas and the time to celebrate the birth of Jesus. It seems that at this season of the year more than any other, everyone is filled with music. The Concert Choir -and University ushered this season in at Stetson last Friday with •their ■ presentation ' of "The Messiah" by Handel. The program was repeated on Sunday afternoon. This great work of art was presented for the first time on the Stetson campus in 1905. Since then it has been given every year except for 1961 and 1963. Every year people come from miles around to hear the program, many having to stand for the two hour performance. "The Messiah" is Handel's best known and most successful oratorio. It was composed in twenty-four days in August and September of 1741. The first concert was held in Dublin, Ireland, on April 13, 1742 with Handel conducting the performance. It is a work that has been enjoyed by millions the world over and continues to be a favorite at the Christmas, time of the year, PART ,OF LIFE Music is a vastly important part in the life of almost, every individual. It is at certain seasons of the year that it takes on an even more special meaning. Often so much more can be expressed through music than through mere words. Music can send thrills and chills through one that words alone are unable to do. It is for this reason" that works of such magnitude as "The Messiah" have come to mean so' much to so many people. Soloists for the performances were: Ivey Bedell, Monica Hester and Prissy Jones, soprano; Karen Anderson, Betty Bedsole, Diane Bethea, and Caryl Giffin, contralto; Ken Steele, Bing Vick and Grover Wilkins, tenor; and John Burchette, bass. In both performances a number of choir alumni joined in the program. "The Messiah" -performances are lust a beginning of the Christmas musical programs on campus. Each year is held the annual candle lighting service and the carol sing around Hulley Tower, in which the Choir is a loading participant. The choir, under Prof.'s direction, leads the student body and visitors in a number of Christmas carols and also sings several numbers itself. This year in connection with the English theme of Christmas and the lighting of the Yule Log after the carol sing, the Choir .sang the English carol "God .Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" as the students filed by the log with their sprigs of holly into the SUB. Another activity of the Choir this year was the singing of carols downtown. This was done in connection with the DeLand merchants and their observance of Christmas. ,/ —leadership and participation in extracurricular academic activities ; —citizenship and service to school; —and promise of usefulness to business and society. It is customary, during this vote, for students on the student affairs committee to abstain in their right to vote and to excuse themselves from the balloting to prevent embarrassment, since these students are often on the list of nominees. After the vote, the students selected are notified, and a list of those students is sent to editor H. Pettus Randall Tuscaloosa, Ala. The honor of being selected is, according to Mr. George W. ' ; Supreme Court justices upheld j unanimously the controversial public accommodations section of the civil rights law. In another decision Tuesday j the court ruled that the new law requires the dismissal of charges ahd reversal of convictions against civil rights sit-in demonstrators prior to the passage of this law. Because of this pronouncement, approximately 3.000 cases in the South will be affected. Despite strong French opposition, Secretary of Slate Dean Rusk addressed NATO officials concerning the, possibility pf an "allied nuclear "command. This proposal would give all member nations an allotment of tactical weapons from American, English, and French nuclear stockpiles — the decision to use them still remaining with the U. S. President. IMP, an American satellite that resembles an Insect' and orbits the earth from deep in space once every three days, has reported the discover}' of a region of'little or no magnetic activity. Ness, designer of this satellite, ihe IMP has confirmed indications that the earth Is a "magnetic comet" whose tail, always on the side opposite the sun, produces magnetic force lines to and beyond the moon. "Dear Heart," the latest song from composer Henry Mancini, now has 20 different versions at the record shops and is on its way to set a precedence. Warner Brothers have signed Glenn Ford and Geraldine Page to star in a not-written-as-yet movie of the same name in order that the song can vie for, an Academy Award. Junior Miss fashions, marketed by Bobbie Brooks — second only to Jonathan Logan in the field of women's clothing — will soon become international. Plants are being constructed in Canada, Mexico, South Africa, New Zealand, and Japan to produce American clothes for the teenage customer. Richard W.Fearce, a member of the Stetson faculty, De- Land attorney and Volusia county " school board member, was the principal speaker; at the tapping. Aspley, chairman of the board of the Dartnell corporation, Chicago, El., and his wife have established a permanent scholarship at Stetson University, to encourage'and reward' deserving students, in the .University's School '• of. Business- Administration. . The,' initial check for $4,000 was presented by Mr. and Mrs. Aspley'to Stet: son President J. ' Senate Okays Honor Code : By a roll-call vote of twenty to four, the Student Senate endorsed the adoption of an Honor Code by Stetson University. The Vote was taken at a meeting Tuesday night,- December 15th, after several weeks of deliberation on the-Senate floor. Copies of the Constitution as it now stands,. subject to revision, and brochures describing the nature, purpose, and general mechanics of an Honor System will be distributed to the student body at the beginning of the second semester, and a vote will be taken later in the semester.
