Dr. Paul F. Geren Inaugurated
Today As Stetson's Fifth President
First To Be
Officially
Inaugurated
Firmly In Command
DIPLOMAT, SCHOLAR, INITIATOR, a man
with a passion for getting things done. On the
job only 6 months, yet there is no doubt among
us, a leader of men: our President Paul Francis
Geren.
Today marks the inauguration of Stetson's fifth
President in its 85ryear
history as one of Florida's
oldest institutions of higher learning.
Dr, Paul Francis Geren,
career diplomat and former vice-president of Baylor TJniversity, will be invested this afternoon at
2:30 in the sanctuary of
the First Baptist Church
adjacent to the campus by
former Governor Doyle
Carleton, Chairman of the
Board of Trustees.
The ceremony is the climax
of events of during the past
weeks of the Winter Term highlighted by the President's seminar on the Future of Stetson.
Invited guests include representatives from colleges and
universities throughout the
country, government officials
from Florida representing both
the state and national level, and
many international educators.
Dr. Geren will be the first
president at Stetson to be formally inaugurated. He succeeds
Dr. J. Ollie Edmunds, two announced his retirement in February of last year and has since
been invested as Chancellor of
the University, a post created
especially for him.
Since assuming his studies on
September 15, President Geren
has instituted a program of
international studies, an effort
to bring closer ties with the
Florida Baptist Convention, and
a push for more intercollegiate
cooperation in the central Florida area.
PRINCIPAL SPEAKER
Dr. Samuel H. Miller, dean
of the Harvard Divinity School,
wil deliver the Inaugural Address. He is a noted theologian -
and scholar as well as a personal friend of Dr. Geren.
Dr. Miller, a national leader
in the parish minstry, was
named Dean of the Harvard'
Divinity School and John Lord
O'Brian Professor of Divinity
in 1959. He was minister of the
Old" Cambridge Baptist Church
in Cambridge, Massachusetts,
next door to Harvard "University
when Dr. Geren was studying
there for his Masters and Doctorate in economics, 1938-41.
Geren worshipped in Old Cambridge Baptist Church and' was
often in the home of his pastor, Dr. Miller.
