Geren Upholds SAC Vote On Campus Cigarette Ban Stetson University will con- - tinue a regulation against the sale of tobacco products on campus, according to a statement by President Paul F. Geren _ URGING CIGARETTES ON CAMPUS Stetson's 'Smoke-In9 Draws Nattional Attention Stetson's campus proved last week that it is not beyond reach of the protest demonstrations which have occured on the nations campuses during the past few months. In what was thought to be a first, Stetson SG senators Russ Buchan and Dave Finley, sponsored a smokein protesting the ban against the sale of cigarettes on the campus. The meeting was held in response the action of the Student Affairs Committee, who last week recommended to President Paul Geren that cigarettes not be sold by a vote of 8 to 7. One Senator said that the "Smoke-In" badly miss-represented the Student Affairs Committee. As well as free cigarettes and. the folk music provided by Miss Shannon Keating, the "Smoke- In" brought on much national publicity. It was probably the first protest of its kind. The Associated Press estimated a crowd of 350 students — which in fact was closer to 250. The Orlando Sentinel dubbed the "Smoke-In" as a "Hazy Protest". We asked Senator Dave Finley what his committee planned to do if the proposal was defeated." We will gather more data, And more inclusive information to use in support of our wantons. Even if defeated, we will not take a defeatest attitude". He also assured us that his committee had no plans for another "Smoke-In" in the immediate future. Wednesday morning. The decision came following a "smoke-in" last week by students demanding the sale of cigarettes in residence hall's and other campus buildings. President Geren's decision followed a recommendation of the Sut- dent Affairs Committee, a faculty-student board which voted to uphold the ban. Official notification of his decision was conveyed in a letter to Miss Marsha Gelbart, chairman of the Student Senate and vice president of the Stetson Student Government. The original request for sale of cigarettes was sent to President Geren in the form of a resolution from the Senate after that body woted in favor of eliminating the ban. Geren's letter to Miss Gelbart stated in part: "The ban on sale of cigarettes on campus ■ was first ordered following the early reports of the Surgeon General concerning the relationship between smoking and cancer. Recent reports make the case even stronger. "Note as an abridgement of student choice but as an expression of a hope that Stetson students will be smoking less and enjoying life more, I uphold the ban on sale of tabacco products on campus." After the Monday and Tuesday night kick-off of the annual Green Feather charity drive with dorm collections, and Wednesday's sports (?) spectacle between the girls' intermural all-stars and some of our talented male faculty members, paced by "Hands Han sen," the co-workers of the com- . mittee are looking forward to a successful wrap-up of the drive, climaxed by the carnival Saturday night. The weekends', activities begin tonight at. seven with the Miss Hatter Beauty Contest, followed by a S.U.B. sponsored dance, featuring the Tentacles Of Time, all proceeds "of which will go to the drive. Saturday morning the organizations participating in the carnival will begin setting up their booths on the midway (Hulley Field) anticipating large crowds. At nine that morning a feast-in "Pancake Day" will begin at the Presbyterian Church and will serve until seven that night. The carnival will get under way at seven with all of the traditional favorites as well as several new innovations being featured.by the various campus organizations. Highlighting the carnival will be the Omega Phi "Soul Show" featuring Clarence (Soul Brother) Anderson, and other brothers of the recently formed local fraternity. Pi Kappa Phi and Zeta Tau Alpha wUl present a variety show; and Sigma Nu and Pi Beta Phi will give you the opportunity to put egg on the faces of people for the sake of sweet charity; The Lambda Chi's will be. paired wtih the Alpha Chi's and will present their ever-popular burlesque show while the Sig Eps will take to the water with, the Phi Mu's at their dunking booth. Coffee House-a-go-go will be the theme of the Pike-Tri Delt show and the Delta Sigs will present a varity of fun and games with the Alpha Xi's at their midway. After the carnival, the S.U.B. will feature the movie "Bridge on the River Kwi" with all of the proceeds going to Green Feather. This years committee chairmen Nan Smith and Dave Falkins hope- that everyone will turn out and help make this year's Green Feather week-end a tremendous success for charity. Political Luncheon Discussion 'Concluding t h e Religious Focus Week's activities will be the weekly Friday luncheon discussion featuring two of the guests who have been on campus this week. Mr.. WiUiam A. Lawson, pastor of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, and Mr. L'arold L. Schulz, director of the anti-poverty program for the National Council of Churches, and former worker with Dr. Martin Luther King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference, will lead the discussion on: "Hbw Involved Should the Church Become in Social Conditions and Problems. "How involved should the chui'oh become with political candidates and issues." The discussion will be held in the Stetson Room at noon today with all interested students encouraged to go through the line in the Commons and bring their lunches upstairs to participate in the discussion. Next week's discussion will feature Stetson History professor, Dr. Harold Schultz. Dr. Schultz spent the summer in Africa on- a Fulbright — Hay program and will discuss "Problem's of new nation building in Africa" next Friday. WEEKLY CALENDAR J Friday, October 27 S. TJ. B.
