\ .Volume 80 THE FLORIDA'S OLDEST COLLEGE NEWSPAPER Friday, September 22, 1967 Number 4 Dr. Geren Begins Duties As Stetson President WJBS Radio Hails Geren And Stetson Last Monday and Tuesday, Radio Station WJBS of DeLand presented as the first of its new news features, a Salute to Stetson and "Profile of a President " featuring the life to Dr. Paul Geren and comments by faculty and administration on their new leader. Dr J. Ollie Edmunds, Dr. Harold Schultz, and Dr. John E. Johns. University Business Manager, spoke about the prospects for the University under Dr. Geren's administration. Dr. Edmunds expressed confidence that the University would grow as never before during the next twenty years. Dr. Schultz, a professor of History said that the general reactions of the faculty towards the selection of Dr. Geren were .\ery favorable. Sehult_: said, "He understands the contemporary crisis in education." The role of the Faculty Senate was pointed out H_y Schultz in that they submitted to the Selection Committee some criteria which the faculty wanted to see in their new leader. The Faculty Senate also unanimously recommended Dr. Geren for the post of President. THE GREAT SEAL IS PASSED from new Chancellor of the University Dr. J. Ollie Edmunds to new President Paul Geren. Dr. Geren assumed his duties last Monday. Freshmen Beauty Contest To Be Held September 30 By DAVE MACHETTE The annual Pi Kappa Phi Freshmen Beauty Contest is being sponsored again this year for the Stetson community. It will be held this year- on Sept. 30 at 8 p. m. in the Stetson Room, after which there will be a band party open to all students. Every year the contestants will be judged by a panel of girls elected by each sorority and the independent women's organization. The girls will be judged in both day clothing and formal evening wear. Contestants for the 1967 crown will be Linda Brett, Anne Knight, Paula Vitello, Lane Taylor, Debbie Thompson, Ro- chelle Waters, Virginia Peter- man, Robin Overstreet, Ruthie Gehres, Patsy Cole, Martha Hardinan, Suzanne Clark, Kathy Sumer, Virginia Rand, and Lucia Smith. The music following the contest will be supplied by the Roadrunners of Orlando. Due to the increased attendance, the contest and the dance have both been moved to the Stetson Room in order to provide adequate facilities. Mark the date on your calendar—Saturday, Sept. 30th! for the Pi Kappa Phi Freshmen Beauty Contest. LAST YEAR'S FRESHMAN BEAUTY QUEEN, Ingrid Erickson is crowned by the 1965 winner Karen Peterson last Septmber. This year's queen will be chosen Saturday, September 30 in the Stetson Room. Exemption tests for mini-mester courses will be given during this semester by the Guidance Center. The-first of these •will be the G-103 test from. 2-5 p.m. on September 26. The G-104 test will be given at the same time period on September 28. Both tests will be given in Room 206 Sampson, require a $25 fee and give 3 hours credit if passed. Students who wish to take these tests must sign up in the Counseling Center, 145 East Michigan, at least 3 days before the test. A Special Orientation Week By JEAN ANSLEY Stetson's new president Dr.. Paul Geren began his duties this week by thoroughly acquainting himself with the campus and students. Rather than starting office appointment's immediately, he has spent the last four days touring the facilities and meeting with faculty department heads and administration. This morning Dr. Geren and new Chancellor Dr. J. OUie Edmunds will leave for St. Petersburg to visit the Stetson Law School. While there he will confer with Dean Sebring of the Law School and eat lunch with the 200 students. Saturday, Geren will lunch with Ex-Florida Governor and Chairman of Stetson's Board of Trustees, Doyle Carlton and Mrs. Carlton and will'then return to DeLand. During the past week the new president has visited almost all of the various offices and departments and confered with top employees in each. Monday morning he also visited the men's and women's dorms, the fraternity houses and the ROTC Headquarters. Tuesday Geren was escorted by Acting Dean of the Liberal Art School, Dr. Ray Sowers and visited the Registrar's Office, the library, and the new science building. Later on that'day he toured the music school with Dean Paul' Langston and the new School of Business Administration with Dean Edward Furlong. The faculty were officially introduced their new boss at a reception and 'dinner for Dr. and Mrs. Geren Tuesday night in the Union Building. Turning to financial matters on Wednesday, the budget for the coming year was reviewed with Dr. John E. Johns, University Business Manager, and H. Graves Edmundson, Comptroller. Director of Admissions Gary Meadows explained the facets of the Admissions and Financial Aid Offices. Luncheon . Wednesday .was held for Dr. Geren with Student Government President John Welch, SG Vice-President Marsha Gelbart, Union Board Pres- dent Jeff Ledewitz, and Reporter Editor Dean Bunch. Thursday was mostly devoted to Stetson's relations with the church. During the day Geren met with the Directors of Religious Activities and Church Relations, and he was a guest at a dinner given by the Baptist Ministers of Volusia County yesterday evening. After having had his own special Orientation Week the new President will begin regular of- r fice hours on Monday. Beginning in October, he and Mrs. Geren and their youngest daughter will reside in the President's Mansion on the Boulevard. Tryouts For Stover Today Stover Theatre announces that tryouts for Spoon River Anthology, -by Edgar Lee Masters, will be held today at 4:00 P. M. and 7:30 P. M. They will be held at Stover Theatre. All students are eligible to try out. There are approximately 30 parts available. Singers, especially female, are encouraged to come. Those students who wish to try ou^ for the acting parts do not need to prepare anything. Singers will need to prepare a folk song to be performed. Please provide your own accompaniment. Spoon River Anthology tells the story of a small town and its people.
