(Photo by Hockaday) Howard Hanger Trio At Stetson On Sunday, Nov. 1, at 8:45 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the First Presbyterian Church, the Howard Hanger Trio, a jazz group whose music is religiously orientated, will present "A Worship Experience." The trio, sponsored by the Westminster Fellowship, has a wide assortment of arrangements ranging from Brubeek; Ramsey Lewis, Bob Dylan and the Beatles to many of the traditional humns of the church. The group will make another appearance at 8 p.m. that night in the Stetson Room of the Carlton Union Building where they will present a program of music entitled "A Concert of Jazz in the' Stetson Room of the Carlton Union Building where they will present a program of music entitled "A Concert of Jazz in the Round." The concert will be sponsored by the Religious Life Council. The group includes Paul Reeves, drums, a pre-dental student at Georgia State University. Paul has performed with several rock groups, combos and bands, and when not appearing with the group, models professionally. Howard Hanger, piano, organized the group in 1965. A member of the Experimental Worship Project of the Commission on Worship of the United Methodist Church, he enjoys spending his spare time teaching music and working with children of a foster care basis. Mike Givens, bass, is a business administration major at Georgia State University and also studies music from members of the Atlanta Symphony. Before joining the Trio he traveled for several years with a popular folk group playing guitar and bass. Usually, The Trio plays a variety...from Gregorian Chant in 13-8 time, church hymns, and Bach to Beatles and Dylan. The sound is solid jazz-rock. Participation and involvement are the key words to describe The Howard Hanger Trio's aim for their concert Sunday evening. The trio intends to eliminate the audiences role as an audience and replace it with an active, creative part of their live presentation.' Other media are employed with the music, aiming at involving the audience not only By ALYCE HOCKADAY , "The Total Woman, a Composite of Femininity, Leadership and Service," was the theme stressed during Women's Emphasis Week, held October 19-22, at Stetson University. The Week's activities began Monday with a kickoff tea given by Miss Etter Turner and Mrs. Samuel B. Walls, deans of women, honoring the Associated Women's,Student Council. On Tuesday night, display booths were set up in the Stetson Room of the Carlton Union Building and representatives from a well-known figure salon, cosmetic line, wig shop and women's clothing were on hand to give demonstrations and to counsel the women as to what was best suited to their type. This event stressed the feminine side of the total woman. Leadership Day Wednesday was leadership day, highlighted by the appearance of Miss Elizabeth Kovachevich, attorney, member of the Florida Board of Regents and a Stetson alumna, at the luncheon meeting in the Stetson Room. Miss Kovachevich stressed the importance of women training themselves for a career. "Women in the world today are playing a new kind of role," she said. "It is imperative that you get involved and be interested in what's going on around you," she remarked. "Service Through Children". was the subject discussed by Mrs. Robert Sherer, Wednesday evening. Mrs. Sherer is the wife of a Stetson professor and serves as co-ordinator for the Starke Elementary Tutoring program. "It is important to establish a person to person role as well as one on a broader level," she noted. She explained ways in which women can bring the worid to children" by affecting national decisions such as welfare programs for vocational advancement. On the local basis, she told how they might help in such projects as Helping Hand, Evergreen Day School, the Neighborhood Center and the Tutoring Programs. Service Day. was observed on Thursday, featuring Dr. Lynn 'Bartlett of the University' of Miami as the speaker at the luncheon which was open to the men students on campus. Dr. Bartlett's topic was "What is Love" and she explored the various love relationships each person experiences in their lifetime. She stressed the need for developing love in the world today, the art of caring for others more than one's self, of- being willing to give more than to receive. She noted, that everyone needed love and if this need were unfulfilled it may find an outlet in forms of frustration, violence or sexual promiscuity. During the afternoon, Dr. Bartlett conducted informal discussions in the Stetson dormitory on subjects vital to all college students. She also consulted with students informally, Friday morning in the Student Lounge at the Carlton Union Building, and at a luncheon attended by the head residents and assistant head residents of the dormitories and the AWS Council. Special Project As a special project, booths were set up in front of the Commons on Thursday where women students personally signed more than 500 Christmas cards, originally designed by service club members, to be sent to servicemen overseas. This project was sponsored by the Women's Service Clubs of the University. The entire week's activities were well attended and were definitely not associated with the so-called Women's Lib Movement in any way. Miss Linda Dallager served as chairman of Women's Emphasis Week. with the jazz, but totally with An Experience In Jazz each other. These include light r shows, multi-film projections, "soul games", and encounter- type experiences. "If you remain comfortable during their performance, if you remain thoughtless, emotionless, and uninvolved...you're dead," was the comment of a participator in a concert in Charleston, S.C. The Howard Hanger Trio is representative of our NOW generation because they are multi-faceted. They seem to be part of the ever growing trend to have popular music include all styles of music in their original forms, from the 13th century to . folk-rock jazz. The cost for the concert will be a 25 cent donation by Stetson students and a $1.00 donation by the public. All donations will go toward the Green Feather Charity Drive. J Tj_.V_.
