Volume 80 THE FLORIDA'S OLDEST COLLEGE NEWSPAPER STETSON REPORTER Wednesday, December 6,1967 Number 11 Science & Business Dedicate Their New Homes Science And Christianity Are Partners Sage Hall for the natural sciences was formally dedicated on Friday, Nov. 17 as a tribute to a man with a dream for his son. The dedicatory address was delivered by Dr. John David Maguire, associate provost at. Wesleyan University in Connecticut. Honored at the occasion w_us Mrs. Henry J. Sage, St. Petersburg, who made possible a greater portion of the finances for the $1.5 million structure. The building was named in honor of her husband and their son, Jeffery Carver Sage, as a tribute to the "Sage family. Recognized as a distinguished businessman, Henry J. Sage was president of H. J. Sage Insurance Co. Inc., New York City, for '27 years before retiring to St. Petersburg with his wife. Their son. 'Jeffery Carver, was born in December 1911, and died in January of 1920. The Sage's decision to help Stetson provide a new science hall was, according to Mrs. Sage, "determined out of a dream for the education which our son might have had. and which so many young people need." The two-story structure, which houses Stetson's departments of biology, chemistry, and physics, was named in honor of both Mr. Sage, who passed aiway in St.-, Petersburg in 1963. and their son. Mr. and Mrs. Sage came to Florida to live in 'St. Petersburg in 1952 from their home in Newark, N.J: They live quietly in St. Petersburg and traveled extensively after 'his retirement. He passed aSvay'in St. Petersburg in 1963. Henry Sage, born in Hagges- town. Md., was educated ir. Brooklyn schools and earned a degree from the New York Law College. He was a Mason for over bO years and a past-commander of the Jersey Comman- dery. He was a member of the Salaam Temple of the Shrine and collected items of geology and minerology as a hobby. His coilectaon is presently on display at the Newark Museum. After tiheir son's passing, Mrs. Sage returned to school and earned a degree from the East College of lOhiropraotics in Newark as a method of self-treatment. She never intended to practice-. On Stetson's Campus Stetson's Link To Capitalism: Davis Hall WINN-DIXIE MAGNATES, J. E., Tyne, ahd A. D. Davis, leaders of food retailing in the South at Stetson's new School of Business Administration which bears their name. Davis Hall was dedicated at a ceremony attended by the brothers and their wives last Wednesday. Exams And Traditional Festivities Merge To Form Stetson Christmas Christmas a time for friends to gather and enjoy the special atmosphere that it alone can produce. The Religious Life Council has helped to arrange it so that Stetson students will be gible to enjoy the spirit of the season twice.. Naturally, when we reurn to our homes for the holidays we shall Wave a family Christmas. Here at Stetson, starting of Thursday, December 7, students shall get their head start in joing in and promoting the Spirit of Christmas. Officially the Christmas Season at Stetson starts on Thrus- day, December 7. During this first day a Christmas tree shall be set uip in each of the women's dorms. Each of the dorms decorates its own tree, which makes for a festive wav to start the season, and a good way to pass some extra time .with vour friends. On Friday at 8 the Concert Choir will present a program of Christmas music in Elizabeth Hall. The music school shall repeat its holiday program at 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, giving ifehe remainder of the people living in .and around DeLand the opportunity to listen to Stetson's excellent Concert Choir. Hrday night from 8 to 12 shall find the Stetson Room the .scene of the splendor of the traditional Christmas Snowball The formal attire and good music- make it a special part of the Srririt of Christmas here at Stet son. At 6:30 Monday night the dhlmes of Hulley Tower will an nounce the beginning of the series of events which will bring to a close the special Christmas Season which began on the proceeding Thrusday. Although the official season will have ended the spirit Which these events will help to enhance should carry Stetson through a few hurdles that remain until everyone departs for their own personal Christmas at home. The Monday night festivities will "start with the traditional candlelighting which will occur in the women's dorms at 6:30. .More going to the Yule Log Lighting which 'shall be the climax of the evening there >wi_l be the singing of some of the traditional songs of Christmas. After the singing around Hulley Tower and the Music Annex the scene will shift to the- front steps of the SUB for the enactment of one of the oldest traditions of the Christmas season: the lighting of the Yule Log. After these activities wel- . oome "refreshment will toe" found in the SUB. NOTICE The Student Government will sponsor Green- briars to transport students to and from the De- Land National Guard Armory for our home basketball games. Any persons over 21 with a regular driver's license who would like to drive to these games should send a note to SG, Box 1223, Campus Mail. "Bricks, mortar, steel, and bricks do not make a business school. We dedicate this building to you at Stetson because we think' you can make a business school out of it." With these words A. D. Davis, senior brother in the vast Winn-Dixie food chain formally dedicated Davis Hall to Stetson. The ceremony was held at the main entrance to the building last Wednesday afternoon after . a luncheon for the Davis brothers in the Stetson Room .-attended by many faculty and upper-division business students. Three of the four brothers, A. D. Davis, chairman of the executive committee of Winn-Dixie; J. E. Davis, chairman of the, Board; and Tine W. Davis, senior vice-president in Montgomery, Alabama and their wives were honored at the occasion. Austin Davis 'of Miami was unable to attend. Chancellor Edmunds traced the history of Stetson and its many benefactors. Edmunds Co-enciding with all the events said that Stetson had been built of our special Christmas Season by -men like Henry DeLand, will be the presentations of Spoon River Anthology on Dec. 7. 8,: and 9 at. 8 p.m. in the Stover Theater. Christmas is a 'spirit which a part of ea'c'h of us and to spread the spirit requires a lot of people to share it with. Merry Christmas. John B.
