Sandy, who was sponsored by the E^S.U., won over a field of 18 contestants. The first runnerup was Terry Frazier, right sponsored by Stetson Hall with Lindy Jackson, left, sponsored by Pi Kappa Alpha, placing third. Geren Inauguration Set For January 26 • Dr. Paul F. Geren, fifth president of Stetson, will be inaugurated during a formal University Convocation on January 26, 1968, in the DeLand First Baptist Church. The inaugural c e r emony, which will climax a two-d'ay program of events, will attract to DeLand many educators and otiher noted persons representing "Dr. Geren's diverse bf'cj*' ground. Invited guests include representatives from colleges and universities throughout the country, government officials from' Florida representing both the state and national level, and many international educators. Dr. Geren will be the first president at Stetson to be formally inaugurated. He succeeds Dr. J. OUie Edmunds who announced his retirement in February, 1967. Dr. Eci- munds was elected by Ji}e Stetson Board of Trustees to tlhe office of Chancellor of tne University. President Geren assumed his duties in September of 1967. The two-day inauguration program begins on Thursday, Jan 25, with a reception for guests and dignitaries at the Stetson Union Building. The Concert Orchestra will perform a concert on Thursday evening in honor of the University's new president and his family. On Friday, January 26, there will be a luncheon for invited •guests and delegates from other colleges and universities. Fallowing the luncheon, the official delegation will, move to the First Baptist Church for the inaugural ceremony. Concluding the activities will be a reception for guests at the Stetson Union Building, and a basketball game with the University of Miami later that night. "We have taken great care to choose a date which will be most, convenient for the city of DeLand and for the. many representatives which we expect to attend the inauguration,"- Ralph Parkman, coordinator of the Inaugural Committee, said. "The inauguration of Dr. Paul F. Geren will undoubtedly be a major event in the history of Stetson and the DeLand community." Sino-Soviet Split Widening? 'Communism: National or International?' Is Topic For Institute, Feb. 22-24 Chapel Discussion Aired By DEAN BUNCH EDITOR Speculation concerning the status of compulsory chapel at Stetson next semester is Increasing as. the President's Task Force on Chapel continues its deliberation. The Task Force which contains no students, was created to study the problem last semester when Geren noted that it was evident that experimentation with the chapel program could not be postponed until the arrival of a chaplain or Dean of Chapel. The University was looking for a man to fill this position but as yet there have been no indication that anyone has been found. One of the discussion groups in the President's Seminar on the Future of Stetson is concerned with this subject. Plans under discussion call for one compulsory meeting at the beginning of the semester to be followed by a series of voluntary sessions. Then at the end of the semester is is speculated that there will be several more mandatory chapels. Jack Mabry, Director of Religious Activities and a member of the Chapel Committee, which also contains no students, confirmed that Ihis is the type of plan under discussion. The Student Senate' recently- defeated a resolution calling for the abolition of the mandatory nature of chapel. The majority of the senators rather suggested that more discussion of the matter was' in order. Compulsory Chapel of one form or another has been in existence since the University came into existence, a period of over. 80 years. Unofficial preliminary re suits a poll recently taken by- students in a marketing re search class in the Business School indicate that there is much dissatisfaction with the present system and that most students do not feel a worship atmosphere is evident at the service. "COMMUNISM: NATIONAL OR INTERNATIONAL?" is the theme of Stetson's Seventh Annual International Affairs Institute. The three-day Institute (January 22-24) will bring to our campus two noted specialists on the Communist world: Dr. William Grif- ,'ith, Professor of Political Science and Director of the International Communism Project at Massachusetts. Institute of Technology, and Dr. Herbert J. Ellison, Professor of History and Chairman, Council for Ih- .ernational Programs, at the University of Kansas. The Student Government needs students (21 years old and holders of. valid driver's licenses) to drive Greenbriar buses to the Armory for home basketball games. The SG will pay drivers $2 per game. SEVENTH ANNUAL In previous years our Winter Institute has dealt With a particular area of the globe — Sub- Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, Russia, India, Latin American, etc. This year the Associated Mid-Florida Colleges are choosing a theme (Communism: National or International) and each college will apply it to its particular area of study. Stetson's emphasis will be on Rus- .sia because of its Russian Studies Program. The topic is one of keen current interest since no longer can we speak of a monolithic Communist party or world. The iron curtain terminology of the 1940's and early 1950's no longer fits the facts of international life. Within the Communist world there are rival factions and dogmas. Age-old national rivalries (China vs. Russia) have reasserted themselves; arguments grow hot over Communist orthodoxy versus revisionism. EXPERTS TO LECTURE The Stetson Community is invited to participate' in the public lectures (see the Schedule of Events) and to ask questions of the lecturers after the sessions. Professor Griffith of MIT serves as Professor of Soviet Diplomacy at the Fletcher School of Law and Diploma'cy and directs the International Communism Project at MIT's Center for International Studies. He has served for many years as political advisor to Radio Free Europe. His many publications include the Sino - Soviet Rift (1964), Sino-Soviet Relations, 1964-1965, and two volumes on Communism in Europe. He will speak primarily on . the theme of the Collapse of Communist Unity. Professor Herbert Ellison is a specialist in Soviet and East European Studies and has one of the finest textbooks available on the history of Russia. Party organization and cultural ferment in Russia will be two of the areas he will deal with at Stetson. The Institute is planned by a faculty committee chaired by Dr. Harold J. Schultz. Other members include" Dr. Andrews, Mr. Alssen, Dr. Bailey, Dr. Budina, Mr. Evans, and Dr. E. Johnson. The Institute provides an excellent opportunity for Stetson students and faculty to keep abreast of rapidly changing event in world affairs and to hear the assessment of these changes by nationally-known specialists.
