h- THE FLORIDA'S OLDEST COLLEGE NEWSPAPER STETSON REPORTER Volume 80 Friday, May 3, 1968 NUMBER 21 Chorus And Orchestra Set Brahms' Requiem The German Requiem of Johannes Brahms will be presented by the Stetson University Chorus and Orchestra under the direction of Robert E. Fort, Jr. on Saturday, May 4, at 8:30. p.m. in Elizabeth Hall. This work, one of Brahm's -most famous, has for its text not the liturgical Latin Requiem but familiar passages of scripture chosen by Brahms himself. The work is to be sung in English, with soloists" Diana Hoagland, soprano and~Alan Celoria, baritone. On the same program Miss Hoagland will sing Wolfgang Mozart's solo motet "Exsultate, Jubilate" with the Stetson University Orchestra conducted by L.,Frederick Maraffie. The program is free and open to the public. SUB Names '68 Officers 20th Anniversary Year Hatter Holiday Wed. Begins Finals Push By MARTI HUGHES Congratulations to the new 1968-69 Stetson Union Board: President, Susan Daye; Vice- president, Ray Johnson; .Secre- Ann Morris Publishes Theme Book Everett Edwards, Inc., De- Land publishing firm, announced today the publication of a new Short Guide to Writing Better Themes, written by Dr". Ann Morris, Assistant Professor, English Department, Stetson University. The new Short Guide Is the result of more .than two years or testing and experimentation by Dr. Morris, and is one of a series of such guides "published by Everett Edwards, Inc. Drs. Eliot Allen, Ethel Colbrunn, and Byron Gibson have written previous titles in the series. " A Short Guide to Writing Better 'Themes features sample essays written by actual students instead of by professional writers, thus offering students attainable goals. A new Writing Rating Sheet, for use by teachers, is included in the guide, which is publishers, say wilL shorten grading by one-half and simultaneously given a student a graphic, detailed, explicit explanation of his strengths and weaknesses. These chairmen need .committee members and your support to carry out their ideas successfully. Applications for committee membership and Hostess Bureau will be available until Monday, May 6, at the SUB lobby desk. Already the Board has been hard at work to have more activities on campus. Hatter Holiday. Dance on Tuesday, • May 7, will reflect the wild'30's of BONNIE AND CLYDE fame. So, girls, down with those hemlines — the new word is SLINKY. The Clyde -'look' is ,easy with a suit, hat, cigar, and of course, don't be without" that revolver. For those who want to be different, try C. W. Moss .or that bad guy — the Texas Ranger. The only thing not out of the '30's is the music provided by the MASQUERADE PARTY. Afters will be granted until midnight, since no class on Hatter Holiday. Tonight there is no SUB movie, but take heed, next week it is OUR MAN FLINT. On Saturday, May 11, the SUB is sponsoring a trip to BUSCH GARDENS in Tampa (watch those samples!). Look for time and place of departure and price of bus ticket later this week. Bad news for ice cream ticket collectors. Mr. King has announced that the present ice cream tickets will be void af-. ter June 1, 1968. The SUB special for Mother's Day is a concert by the pa triotic folk singers. SING OUT '68. They will perform the evening of May 12 in Elizabeth. The Twentieth Anniversary celebration of Hatter Holiday will be held next Wednesday at DeLeon Springs as a one-day rest from classes and a signal that final examinations are not far away. The festivities will begin Tuesday night with a SUB-sponsored masquerade ball in the Stetson Room. Sutdents are expected to awaken earlier than usual Wednesday morning since there are no classes and give the day a first-class start with Mr. King's breakfast fare. •Action at the springs will start at 10 a.m. with contests and games of skill at which the men can display their physical dexterity developed in Pn 97, et al. The contestants will toss eggs at each, other, swim in the waim springs, run in three legged races,- and other excitements. Lunch will be served from 12 to 2. At 2, the Miss Stetson contest will begin with 20 lovelies from many organizations vying for the title presently held by Bev Darnell. The winner of the Mr. Stetson -will also be announced at this time. Door prizes will be awatded at various times during the day and the boats and canoes will be available to students free. The Pancake House will be open all day for those who don't indulge in the Commons fare. ACCOUNTING SCHOLARSHIP is received by senior accounting major Mike Marston from Dr. Anderson. The $500 award is made to a college senior who intends to enter the practice of accounting by the Florida CPA firm of Ring, Ma- hony, and Armer. Langford Honored KENAN CHAIR is awarded by President Geren, left, to Dr. Ted Bieler, Professor of Chemistry. The chair was established by a grant of $50,000 announced at commencement in September. At right is proud Dean of Sciences, Dr. Robert Chauvin. Dr. Richard E. Langford, associate professor of English at Stetson University, has recently been appointed Regional Chairman of the International Conference on General Semantics, to be held at the Denver Hilton Hotel, , Denver, Colo., August 5-9. The Conference will bring together scholars and leadins: professional people from" many disciplines who will share their experiences with general semantics, problems of communication, and human adjustment. The Conference is jointly sponsored by the International Society for General Semantics and the Institute of General Semantics. Anyone interested in communication is invited to participate in the Conference and in the seminar workshop which will precede and follow the Conference.
