1 j A-?>; ujfrtCG cf-Public Relations' $25,000 Challenge Grant Is Pledged By Stetson Alum A Stetson University alumnus has offered his alma mater a $25,000 gift that.can be claimed if other" alumni, parents, and friends of the University raise an additional $50,000 before May 31, 1967.-President J. Ollie Edmunds revealed the -challenge gift in DeLand yesterday at a meeting of the Stetson University Board of Trustees. The announcement of the gift comes on the threshold of the opening of three new buildings on the Stetson Campus. Classes are already being held -in a new School of Business Administration building, and the opening of a new science center and a new residence hall for men is planned for the immediate future. The addition of these three new buildings will bring anan- ticipated $100,000 annual increase to the operating costs of the University. ."This valuable contrubution from a Stetson alumnus and the accompanying challenge comes at at ime when the need for additional operating funds could not be more apparent," stated President Edmunds. In making his gift to the University, the donor commented, . "I. count the years I spent at Stetson the most rewarding ones of my life. I appreciate this opportunity to do something in return for Stetson, and I have the feeling that many of the University's friends would like to do the same." Doyle E. Carlton, President of the Stetson Board of Trustees, accepting the challenge on behalf of the University, said, "in raising- $50,000 to claim an additional $25.0ttp- from the donor, we will be able to meet many commitments, to our students in tho area of student financial aid that might otherwise be strained. 'At a time when we - are faced - with - a steady increase in "operating costs, a gift of this nature from one of our graduates -is most encouraging. The spirit in which this gift was made available to the University is indicative of the concern our graduates have for the growth -and prosperity of Stetson'and Christian education." (Photo by Irvin) Coach Berner Resigns; Takes Position At USF (From a story in the Sun News) A Stetson University official announced Sunday that 19-year veteran Coach Wes Berner has submitted his resignation effective at the end of the school year. Coach Berner will become the golf pre and manager of the' new 18-hole championship golf course at the University of South Florida in Tampa. He assumes his new poht July 1. The new course is under construction but is expected to be ready for play sometime- in October or November. It is located only two and - a half blocks from the housing area of the university. Commenting on his new position, Berner remarked "I'll be leaching two or chree golf classes, be coaching the varsity golf team and serve as pro and manager at the club." Berner has spent his last few summers teaching golf in Massachusetts at various country clubs. He has played golf all his life and is a top flight player. We are happy to know that plans for a Florida Episcopal College are moving ahead . .." While retaining its own au- Lcnomy, the new college will use Stetson's academic buildings, library, union, and athletic fields. Sanford will, construct its own dormitories, chapel, commons, annd seminar rooms. It is expected that- faculty members for the new college will be--appointed concurrently by Stetson and Sanford to supplement existing Stetson faculty' and to initiate new departments in which both Sanford and Stetson students may take courses. Academic .requirements and curriculum will be determined by Stetson; - Sanford faculty members will have a voice in University affairs through the academic departments of which the;/ are -members. "Stetson, (Trustees and their TONIGHT At 8 Teen Theatre's Our Town First Adult Presentation Stetson Stover Theatre's Teen Theatre, under the direction of Miss Jane Furlong, will present Thornton Wilder's Pulitzer Prize- winning play. OUR TOWN, on Jan. 13 and 14. This production marks the first adult presentation in the history of Stover's Teen Theatre. The group of players is composed ' of very experienced per- sonnnel. They have appeared in three original musicals, "The Adventures of Harlequin," "Co- media d'ell Artes," and several summer theatre productions in connection with Stover Theatre. ~Miss Furlong says that the group has put' a ' great. deal of work into the production and that they "hope very much to please thc audience." "OUR TOWN" depicts the life of a New Hampshire village — with its humor, picturesqueness and pathos — set against a background of centuries of time, social history, and religious ideas.
