(Photo by Irvin) Dancing, Athletics, Sun At DeLeon Springs Hatters Abandon Academics April 26 In a large voter turn-out at Stetson, John Welch was elected president of the Student Government Tuesday. About 50 students heard Secretary of Elections Veda Jo Bunting announce the following winners of the other executive positions: Marsha Gelbart, vice- president; Julie Wilson, secretary; and Carole Davis, treasurer. Pre-Register May lst-5th Pre-registration for students planning to attend Stetson during the summer and in the fall will take place on May 1st thru 5th. Registration will be held in the renovated data processing department on the ground floor of Flagler Hall. Class schedules and registration appointments will be sent out during the week of May 24th. New teachers and classes will be included in the catalogue. Appointments are scheduled according to student classification. A fifty dollar pre-payment for the Fall semester which is due before July 10th may be paid at any time in the Business Office. The registrar encourages all students to pre-register since this will facilitate final registration in the fall. Because voting machines were not available for use in the election, and_ ballots had to be counted by hand, the returns .were not announced until after 9 p.m. By that time tension and excitement had risen to a peak around the front of the SUB. Heading the Liberal Arts School delegation will be President Nan Smith. The five other senators are Jim Jarrard, Hal Cauvel, Tim Baughman," Cathy Brown, and Dave Finley. Topper Keefe received the largest number of votes, and' was named President of the Business School. Senators will be Roy Brown, Dick Colyer, and Nick Thompson. Dale Duncan was elected president and ~ Margaret Hardy senator for the Music School ■ Thursday. Robert Fore and Ronald Crews will vie for the third music school Senate seat in a runoff Tuesday. Elected president of the Senior Class on the first ballot was Steve Hobbs. Senators, also elected on the finst ballot, were Wayne Crosby, Mike Eagan and Walt .Kilcullen. " The president of next year's Junior Class will be Rodney Morgan, and senators Russ Buchan, Bill Gaventa and Frank Thomas. Leading the Sophomore Class will be president Bennie Guthrie and Senators Dick Mahaffey (Continued on Page 2) Stetson's seventeenth annual Hatter Holiday, a day of freedom from the academic grind, will be held at DeLeon Springs this Wednesday. Co-Charmen Elaine L'Heureux and Steve Shoemaker have announced that it promises' to be the biggest and best ever with an all-day dance at the Springs being added to the traditional program. "Little Willie- and the Adolescents" will be providing music "off and on all day" at the spring-side. ATHLETIC EVENTS Also featured will be men's and women's athletic events. Fraternity, sorority and independent groups will be sponsoring contestants for such events as the egg-and-spoon race, three legged race, whellbarrow race, innertube race, egg-toss, plus water relays. Teams will be competing for a large trophy, one each for the winning men's and women's teams. '" The Mr. and-Miss Stetson contest will also be held at the Springs as part of the day's activities. The contest will get under way at 2 p.m. with Steve Shoemaker as emcee. The Commons will be serving box lunches at the Springs around noon-time, which will be free to students with meal tickets. DOOR PRIZES Over 30 DeLand merchants have donated door prizes to be given away periodically during the day. Prizes include everything from gift certificates to a free hair wash and set. Students " may register for the drawings at the* gate as they enter. Transportation to the Springs will be provided by Green- briars which will be leaving from the SUB Circle starting at 10 a.m. The activities will last until 4 p.m. at which time, the Greenbriars will return students to the campus. SUB DANCE The Student Union Board will sponsor a "Mad Hatter" Holiday Dance on Tues. night in the Stetson Room before the day of academic abandon. The "False Prophets" will play for the dance, which will last from 8 to 12 p.m. Co-Eds' hours will be extended to 12 p.m. Tues. night. Hatter Holiday is a seventeen- year tradition at Stetson sponsored annually by the freshman class. On this year's Hatter Holiday Committee are; Doug Jones, Vern DeSear, Maureen Jarrell, Ed Harrison, Betty Gaskins, Liz Sorrell and Charlie Craig. Baggett Io leach At Alabama Bill R. Baggett, dean of men at Stetson University, has accepted an invitation to a full- time member of the College of Education faculty at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, for' the summer session. Dean Baggett learned of his invitation from Dr. Palph Roberts, chairman of the Department of Counseling and Guidance at the University of Alabama. He will be teaching Principles of Guidance and Student Personnel Services in Higher Education. A native of Cullman;- Alabama, Baggett earned his A.B. at Howard Coilega He joined Stetson in 1960 as Assistant Dean of Men and became Dean in 1962. Bunch, deMiranda Win Hot Publications Race By RACHEL PIKE After some hard-fought campaigns, some neck-in-neck races, an. all-time high number of ballots cast, and some bitter disappointment, the editors and business managers of Stetson's four publications were announced Tuesday night. Dean Bunch was elected editor of the REPORTER over Rick Badgley with a hair's breadth margin of five votes. The ballots were counted three rimes by disbelieving tabulators. Bunch, a junior from Jacksonville, has been News Editor of this year's REPORTER. The only comment we heard last night from one of next year's most-controversial campus figures was, "I just hope I don't have to spend another day like this!" With a vote of 396-379, Franc deMiranda defeated Sandy Guard in the HATTER editor's race. Skip' Rupp was named " Business Manager of the HATTER, defeating Judge Hardee by 55 votes. deMiranda worked on this year's annual as editor of the Senior Directory. This is his third year on the staff. Bill Millward, running unopposed, was named Business Manager of the REPORTER. He is a junior in the Business School. Barbara Gillespie and Laurie Lawrence, both also running unopposed, were elected editors of the REVIEW fine arts magazine, and the COMPASS student handbook. Miss Gillespie has served this year as co-editor of the REVIEW, and Miss Lawrence has served on the COMPASS staff.
