Vol. 83 Friday, Nov. 6, 1970 No. 10 Chambers Brothers To Appear In Orlando The Chambers Brothers wiU be at the Orlando Sports Stadium, tonight at 8:00 p.m. The Folk-Rock Chambers Brothers quintet have been on the road steadily during 1969 to 1970, including a second European tour, a 10-week, 10-nation spectacular success. Everywhere they found keen interest in American music, American ideas, and peace. "Young rock or folk music fans today," said Lester, "are not involved just in music. It's a whole way of looking at life. They want to know us and talk to us about friendship and a better world. Because of our records, they know us — we're kind of a connecting link for many kids with other people around the world." "When we were in Fayette, Mississippi, the night before: Thanksgiving," recalled George Chambers, "Mayor Evers had a . reception for us in the restaurant, and dozens of kids were waiting for us when we got there and kept peeking in the windows. They just wanted to make sure we'd reaUy gotten there. "Those people — andl mean white and black — don't reaUy want much," said Lester, "but they do want to be included in the outside world. They feel like they've been unfairly left out of things. The police told us of our concert was the best thing that ever happened in Fayette." "Got people together, eatin' together, clappin' bein' happy together." The Brothers, with Lawrence's help, plan to produce such shows all over the South, gathering together the plain folks and giving them music and entertainment by performers particularly admired in that region. "The whole world is. going to change, because of things like this," said Brian, forcefuUy and firmly. "You watch theat TV film made at Fayette, and you'U understand. "This isn't a revolution, it's a solution. And we'll make it with love, peace and happiness." AU Stetson students wiU be admitted free with their Student I.D. card. When you drive into the stadium area, you don't have to spend 50 cents to park, as they make you believe. Go by the 50 cents area and park in front of the stadium — it's free. The Bridge An Interview With Don Chauncey The. foUowing is a partial transcript of a recorded interview between Jack Rochford, Campus Editor of the Reporter and Donald Chauncey, House Director of The Bridge. Its purpose is to help clarify to some extent, the purpose and function^) of The Bridge. (ROchford) What is The. Bridge? (Chauncey) It is an organization to try to eliminate immediate crisis or immediate panic whether it be through telephone therapy or whether it be.by having the person come in and talk himself through the crisis stage. The Bridge wiU be available to aU who are in a crisis. (Rochford) In other words it is an availability center. (Chauncy) Right,, If somebody has anything that is a problem — which is reaUy anything that is giving them a hard time — they can come and talk it out and seek a solution to it.' (Rochford) What is the purpose of The Bridge? (Chauncey) The purpose of The Bridge is to try to erase the panic state and to try to match up people and their needs. HopefuUy, the Bridge wttl serve to create some kind of force in DeLand to help to better the community in some way. (Rochford) What is the geographical scope of The Bridge? (Chauncey) WeU, the people that we're going to try to be set up to handle will be the people in West Volusia. Daytona has so much stuff already, that they don't reaUy need The Bridge' as much as the West Volusia area does. (Rochford) Are you associated with any such other institutions, (for example, the ones in Daytona.)? (Chauncey) We will refer people to any existing agency in Volusia County that we think the person might need. Other than on a referral basis we have no official connection with any other institutions. We wiU refer people ..to the Half-way House if they have a dope problem that they are trying to break or if we get a town kid who thinks he needs a psychiatrist we wiU refer him to the Guidance Center in Daytona where they're set up to handle things like this where people can't afford to pay a regular psychiatric fee. Other than that we have no connection with anything. (Rochford) Who runs "The Bridge? (Chauncey) WeU, right now John DuPree (who is the President) and I run it. But once we're setup the people who work there wiU nm it. We have a Board ; of Directors of business-men from the town. They are there primarUy because our charter as a non-profit; organization requires that we have a Board of Directors. They lend us respectabiUty and they try to find sources of income for The Bridge. They wiU not take an active part in the running of TheJEiridge. (Rochford) As a non-profit organization, are gifts to The Bridge tax-deductible? (Chauncey) Yes! But I think we have to be in existance six months or a year before we can get our own tax-exempt status. Right now, the Mental Health Association of Volusia County is kind of taking us under its wing and if people want to give money that is tax-deductible, they should send it through the West Volusia Mental Health Association and ear-mark it to be used for The Bridge. (Rochford) Where does The Bridge get its money besides contributions? (Chauncey) It doesn't. We can't legaUy solicit contributions for another couple of weeks when our charter is approved and we become official. So far, most of our money comes from Stetson — from the Student Government Association. We've gotten a few personal contributions and Dean Turner has given us a bit every now and then so that we can meet our bills. (Rochford) Where does the money go? (Chauncey) Right now it doesn't go anywhere because there isn't any; But when we get the money, most of it wiU go for running the house. We are trying to operate on a budget of about $3000 dollars per year. I think we'll be able to get that much. We want to have another phone put in for outgoing calls but that wiU have to wait until we get the money. We want to keep the Continued on pg. 2 C ®' _-3 -531___f-«BS*- -_y 6. .£,*. .7.
