(Photo by Irvin) Hon Hall Cops Third Quiz Bowl Championship By DAVE LAVOY Tuesday night Hon Hall claimed its third consecutive Quiz Bowl championship by thrashing a valiant Palms team 23-12 in the final round of the annual event. It was wistful moment for the Hon Hall team, two of whose members 'Larry Clarke and Scott Hauger) have played on all three championship teams; for it was the last Quiz Bowl match for Hon Hall, the oldest campus men's residence, which will be demolished this summer. The third Hon player (besides Clarke and Hauger) was John Charles King. The Palms was represented by Angel Castillo, Frank Quina, and Allen' Watts. HARD-FOUGHT BATTLE These two teams battled three times on the final night; the Hon won the tiist game handily i30-12., the Palms squeaked by in the second (20-19), and the Hon triumphed again in the chird (23-12). In the past two years only the Hon has beaten the Palms, and only the Palms has beaten the Hon. 33 TEAMS Tliirty.three teams started the annual competition early in March, and six teams remained in contention on the night of the chajnpityiship. Behind the Hop and tlie Palms finished Lambda Chi Alpha*Carson Hall, Carson Annex, and Alpha Xi Delta. Six teams played in at least 3ix games. Their records and the average game score are as follows: Team Record Score Hon Hall 6-1 24-12 The Palms 712 19-16 1-ambda Chi-Alpha 6-2 17-13 Carson Hall 4-2 17-16~ Carson Annex 4-2 17-16 Millard Fillmore Fan Club 4-2 16-16 HIGH SCORERS Several players scored a minimum total of 40 points. The statistics follow: The exemption test for G101 will be given -Monday, 24, at 2:30 in Room 221, New Science Building. Interested students should sign up for this test at the Counseling Center. The G105 exemption examination will be administered at 2:30 on Thursday, April 20, and the G106 at 2:30 on Friday, April 21."Please sign up for this examination with Dr. Colwell in the English department. By RACHEL PIKE With Student Government and Publications elections set for Tuesday, April 18, campaigning is going, full speed ahead on the Stetson campus. Heading u? the platfrom of unopposed SG presidential candidate John Welch is the proposed creation of two new SG Cabinet posts. Welch intends to appoint a Secretary of Student Employment and Co-Secretaries of Student Housing. NEW CABINET POSTS The duties of the Secretary of Student Employment would be to work with the administration representing students on financial aid, to help secure local parttime employment for .students, to compile a list of available summer jobs for students and to assist the Placement office in securing permanent jobs for seniors. Welch's Co-Secretaries o f Student Housing,, a boy and a girl, would be responsible " for "ameliorating problems in student housing and aiding the administration in planning future housing." EXECUTIVE BRANCH Candidate Welch told the REPORTER that "My job will be to go ahead with the development of Stetson's' Student Government into the three branches —executive, legislative and judicial—that, were began last Tuesday with the passage of the constitutional amendment creating an executive branch." Welch proposed to work with the executive branch of the SG— getting more students involved in student government and extending such services as theSG Book Exchange and the Travel Bureau. "I'm also in favor of continuing the curriculum evaluation program. If a student is going to pay for his education he has the right to some guidance in selecting courses that would-be- the most valuable to him." .. Welch said that he intended to participate in a SUSGA program to better the evaluation form. "This is not something that you can go about in a irresponsible manner." V-P CANDIDATES Marsha Gelbart cited the two main functions of student government, and related her part as SG vice-president in performing them. . Marsha said that the vice- president is important in the area of communication b etween students and administration. "Since the vice-president of the Sutdent Government sits on the Student Affairs Committee, the iPublications Board, she has the duty of being a link of com- cunication. She has the job of relaying student wants to the porper authorities." The other job of the SG she added,, is to provide student services, an'area where its vice- president can be a - sounding board and a prodder to action. Beth Spiro, the other lady candidate for SG vice-president, told the REPORTER, "Vice- presidential candidates don't ordinarily have platforms as such. I am running to work with the student government president, to keep the Student Senate unified and disciplined so that it can work effectively." Beth said, too, that she would work to better such student services as. the SG Book Exchange, plus improving concerts and entertainment.
