-Is. ^j^ ' Top ranking curve analyst of last year's world series, Johnny Mize, lias announced his choice for the 1953 Hatter beauty section. "Big Jawn" selected Ginger Rich, sponsored by Sigma Nu Fraternity, for first place. Caroline McGinnis, Delta Delta Delta Sorority candidate, was second place Winner. Other beauties chosen were: Ann DeLaney, Delta Sigma Phi; Joan Mace, Pi Beta Phi; Mary Glenn Lowry, Pi Kappa Phi; and ?Bunnie Stephens, Zeta Tau Alpha. The contest was judged from pictures submitted by twelve campus organizations. Mize, DeLand's number one citizen and prominent- player for the New York Yankees, recently won the Babe Ruth Memorial Award for Outstanding Player in the World Series. "Florida's Oldest College Newspaper" 66th YEAR - STETSON UNIVERSITY, DELAND, FLORIDA, Friday, January 16, 1953 No. 14 [RATION ; ADVISERS ARE LISTED During the period beginning Monday, January 19, and ending Saturday, January 24, faculty advisers will assist their advisees in planning courses of study for the Spring Semester. Students may find the names of their advisers by referring to the Faculty Adviser Lists on the Bulletin boards. Before selecting courses, each student should give careful attention to the adviser's "Check Sheet" which is an up-to-date summary of the college credit the student has earned and the courses he will be required to take. After the adviser has signed the student's Faculty Adviser Card, which shows the complete schedule of classes for which the student wishes to register, the card should be taken to the Registrar's Office immediately. Only those cards which are in the Registrar's Office by January 24, will be included in the pre-registration procedure. On Registration Day, February 9, students whose pre-registration is complete may obtain their class cards at the Library. Those students who wish to change their course of study or have not yet made out their schedules may do so by conferring with their advisers and going through the regular procedure at the Library. The Business Office will accept (Continued on Page Two) E. Stanley Jones Speaks Before Large Audience Dr. E. Stanley Jones, missionary, evangelist and author, speaking to a large group of town and school listeners, completely captured his audience in a special chapel service Tuesday afternoon, in Elizabeth Hall. After an introduction and opening prayer by T. H. Wise of the Reeves Memorial Methodist Church in Orlando, Dr. Jones spoke in concerning the need of a positive faith. "Men do not live by 'no's", he said, instead, they must manifest themselves positively, with 'yes's." Outlining four choices which every person must make in life:— life work, life mate, life happiness, and life philosophy—he emphasised the necessity of faith and stated several arguments for the exis- (Continued on Page Two) Advance Plans For Religious Emphasis Week Released; Evans To Be Speaker Dr. D. J. Evans of the Hunter Street Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, will be the speaker during Religious Emphasis Week, Feb- 18-19. This week of religious meetings, discussions and lectures is an annual event presented by the school. During Emphasis Week, one guest speaker conducts a series of speeches on the different aspects of Christianity. This week is usually alternated annually with Religious Focus Week, during which a number of speakers express their different views on one point of Christian living. This year, however, instead of alternating as usual, there will be only one speaker. This week will be climaxed by the Opera Work Shop presentation of the oratorio, "Elijah." Jim Dator, chairman of the committee, has asked for suggestions from the students as to speakers and subjects, and announced that any one wanting to help make arrangements for Emphasis Week would be welcome. LITTLE THEATRE PRESENTS ONE-ACT PLAYS TONIGHT, SAT Two more "performances, tonight and tomorrow are scheduled for three one-act plays, the current Stover Theatre productions. The three short plays comprising the evening's entertainment are "Spreading the News", a comedy; ''Ephrata", a drama; and "Master Pierre Patelin", a farce. Curtain time is 8:00 pm. Seniors Enjoy First Skip Bay Yesterday wasn't Thursday. At least it wasn't for the Stetson seniors. For them it was "Skip- day" and the 1953 grads were excused from all classes. This was the first time a "Senior Skip Day" has been held at Stetson. "The idea behind Senior Skip Day", said James "Booty" Nance, chairman of the event, "was to get seniors from all phases of activity on the campus to have one big social event." Assisting Nance were Carolyn Baltzer, Charlotte Naylor, George Schriver, Jack Collins and Bobby Marks. Honor To Tap New Members In Chapel Today Five women students will be formally tapped for membership in The Honor at this morning's assembly. Dean Etta Turner, a charter member of the organization will be the speaker. The Honor was founded in 1934 by Dean Turner to fulfill the need for an organization to promote leadership among Stetson women. The requirements for membership are: good character, prominence in three major fields on campus, scholarship and citizenship. Membership in The Honor is the highest recognition a Stetson woman can achieve. Each year The Honor presents the Outstanding Freshman Girl Award to the most deserving freshman girl who has contributed the most to Stetson's campus activities and maintains a high scholastic average. This year the organization joined with Ye Mystic Krewe in sponsoring the Alumnae Homecoming breakfast. "Spreading the News" is an Irish folk comedy by Lady Gregory that has maintained a particularly wide and enduring popularity. The cast, mostly students making their first Stover Theatre appearances, is headed by Vola Therrell, Ellen Driggers, Carl Storey, Kelly Weeks, Redden Thames, Hugh Young, Mark Hollis, Patricia Taylor, Robert Thurman and Jack Shaw. Mrs. 0. G. Brockett is director. "Ephrata", directed by Virginia E. Griffin, is the dramatic tale of the conflict between love for a sweetheart and devotion to religion. Appearing will be Jack Coldiron, Marilyn Talton, Bill Holley, Met Burgess, Barbara Bron- son, Mildred Crowe. Anne Gatlin, Joy Nichols, and Shirley Lowe. "Master Pierre Pateline" is considered by authorities as the greatest Medieval French farce. Heading the cast of this loth century- product are Joe Purnell, Carole Hummelgard, Howard Smith, Burt Holmes and Ed Townsend. Carl Storey, Kelly Weeks, Ellen Driggers, Hugh Young, Mark Hollis, Patricia Taylor, Robert Thurman and Jack Shaw also appear, O. G. Brockett directs. Eighteen Outstanding Seniors Selected For Feature Section of 1953" Annual Eighteen seniors, nine boys and nine girls, have been announced as the outstanding seniors of the 1953 Hatter. These Students were elected by the student body from a list, compiled by a committee from the Hatter annual staff, of seniors who had contributed the most to the school in the fields of leadership, scholarship, and school activities. The outstanding senior girls are: Mary Jo Braddy, Joan Mace, Carolyn Baltzer, Merrilee Middleton, Jackie Rich, Barbara Rutter, Nancy Lightfoot, Donna Jean Newcomer, and Marilyn Talton. The senior . boys chosen as outstanding are: Jack Coldiron, B. J. Leathers, Bill Holley, Harry Rutledge, Jack 'Morgan, Carroll Lewis, Tom Mahaffey, George Shriver, and Bobby Marks.
