Or Administration Holds The Fate Why John Cusack of Hookah in Their Hands is Relevant by Natalie Wearstler High Fidelity is one of those stories that divides fans into two groups: those with die-hard allegiance to Nick Hornby's 1995 novel, and those with unwavering adoration for Stephen Frear's 2000 film. There are a few obvious differences between the two presentations, such as changing the heartbroken protagonist's name from Rob Fleming to Rob Gordon, moving him from London to Chicago, and, of course, the presence of John Cusack. Overall, though, the story is the same; 30-something-year-old tries to understand why all of his relationships have ended by composing "Top 5" lists for every situation, re-connecting with ex-lovers, and hanging out at his record store, Championship Vinyl. Having never read the book, I fall into the latter category of fans by default. I'm not alone, though; I'm joined by Donwill, a member of the ■firprhuu ukr Tanya Morgan.-He admitted in a recent interview with New York Magazine that he hasn't read a single page of Hornby's novel, either, but he's changing the dynamics of the High Fidelity fan universe. Thanks to the savvy hip- hop artist's latest solo project, Don Cusack in High Fidelity, fans don't have to choose between reading or watching the story unfold. Now, they can hear it. Just in time for the ten year anniversary of the film's release, Donwill recently unleashed his concept album online (it's available on Amazon and iTunes, and can be streamed for free at myspace.com/donwont). Regarding his idea to put his spin on Hornby's story, he told Hip Hop DX that "it's one of those things where a lot of my ideas come from discussions with Tanya Morgan, and Von Pea and I were sitting around saying, 'It would be cool for somebody to do a soundtrack for a movie.' It was an idea that I was hell bent on finishing. I conceived it, and it went through all these different mutations and went from being just a simple five song EP to being a full-length album." The opening track, "The Monologue," features the rapper reciting one of the most well-known excerpts from the movie: "What came first, the Please See "Fidelity," Page 3 Soon to be legal on Campus? by Liz Bogart The SGA's proposal to legalize hookah smoking on campus in the upcoming semesters caused a stir amongst senators. Senators voted for the resolution 30 against 12. The policy could go into effect as soon as the end of this semester if approved by Stetson's administration and faculty senate. To achieve success with this bill, Senator Jeffrey Shapiro, a sophomore said "education of culture and equality at Stetson will be key." Shapiro is adamant about passing the resolution and permitting hookah smoking because "It's an equality issue, if tobacco is allowed why isn't hookah?" Senator Shapiro, who represents the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, introduced the bill he wrote earlier in the year in regards to Stetson's current prohibition on hookah smoking. Shapiro's presentation of the proposal was met with some opposition. Senator John Lynn, a senior representing the Catholic Campus Ministry, strongly reacted to the proposal and actual hookahs that were brought in for display. Lynn, who has been in SGA for three years, opposed the resolution. "I strongly reacted when hookahs were brought in for display because they are not permitted Please See "Hookah," Page 2 Hookah Could Revive the Stetson Station by Joseph O'Brien Well, this could be fun, hookahs on campus, providing me a nictoine fix that I don't feel guilty about. But do you know what would better? Taking the print out of it central location and putting the Stetson Station there. With hookah of course. If Stetson really wanted to make a splash and create a lounge environment that students would congregate at, a hookah lounge in the middle of campus would definately catch people's attention. Is it a good idea? If you're not an anti-smoking nut, then probably. It'd provide a social area for students besides the commons, the perpetually frozen Hat Rack and the quad and would also provide a sustainable location for the Stetson Station (I miss the Green Tea Mint Smoothies). This idea could provide the atmosphere some of my friends who've gone on the Innsbruck trip say is missing in DeLand - a relaxed, open environment. Plus, it'd combine Hookah and Green Tea Mint Smoothies - sounds like a triumph. Qc&d
