PRACTICE STARTED WEEK. THIS Abundance and Quality of Material Assures Good Team for Season 1913. CO-ED ATHLETICS. CALL ISSUED FOR BASKETBALL AND MANY RESPOND. *" Basketball practice was begun in earnest last Monday, and every afternoon this week has found over two full teams hard at work on the basketball court in the gymnasium. Prospects for a fast team are exceedingly bright, and ► it is an assured fact that a quintette will be out that will do credit to Stetson in this line of athletics. Fischer is playing the center > position in fine style, and with him there the pivot position of tile team will be well taken care ^ of. Dunkle and Farriss are looking after the guard positions, while McPherson and Turnquist who have been playing forwards in all of the regular practices, are making good and will probably be used in the games , ► that are to be played this season. \ Stetson will get. her first try out m when they line up Friday night f against a former bunch of Michigan stars, who are wintering at DeLeon Springs. They have played on some of the strongest teams in Michigan and a very fast game can be looked for. On Saturday evening the strong Daytona High School team will be taken on for a game. On Thursday, Dec. 11th Southern College will stop off here and give Stetson battle while on their way to Winter Park to play Rollins College. They have been mak- l ing a tour thru the State of Florida and from newspaper accounts they are credited with having one of the best college teams in Florida. Stetson by that time will be going at their best and one of the fastest games that has ever been pulled off on the local court is looked for. It is hoped that the students will turn out and support basket ball as they supported football and the future success of the great indoor sport at Stetson will be assured. Other games are being arranged for and if the students and townspeople show that they arc interested, the very best teams in this Tennis Tournament to Be Played Soon on New Courts. Continued on.Page 8 The men are not the only members of this institution that are in line for a good season in basketball. The co-eds have issued a call for candidates and quite a crowd has responded. By the end of this week practise will be in full swing and judging from the large and capable squad that have turned out, a most successful year can be prophesied. The new candidates are showing much interest in the work and to judge from their actions, the old girls will have to hustle in order to retain their places on the team. The Women's Athletic Association, organized this year, is prospering. The meetings are uni- formally well attended, and much enthusiasm is manifested over their plans for the coming year. All the co-eds are requested to join but it is not compulsory for one to be a member to participate in the games. It is hoped however that all the candidates will be interested enough to join. The Association makes it possible for the women to have intercollegiate j basketball and it needs the support of all. The benefits are many and the dues are small. A good schedule has been arranged and a number of games will be played here very shortly. An exhibition contest between the old "S" girls will take place at an early date. This game will be played w thout much practice but it will be interesting to see the veterans again on the floor. Besides the basketball team a ennis tournament will be shortly held for the women. The two new courts near Dr. Hulley's house will be used by them unt:l the Chaudoin courts are repaired. Prizes will be offered, the same as last year. A large number of entries are expected and the tournament promises to furnish plenty of cx- | citement. TENNIS TOURNAMENT. MUCH INTEREST MANIFESTED IN SPORT. THE EVOLUTION. OF THANKSGIVING TURKEY IN CHAUDOIN. Two New Courts Finished, Bringing Total up to Seven. As evidence that Tennis is ex-i pectcd to take a prominent place-in Stetson Athletics of the future, comes the news as announced by Dr. Hulley in Chapel of two new courts having been' constructed and placed in first-class condition by the University. This will somewhat relieve the situation which obtains with respect to those courts j in front of Chaudoin, which at times are rather congested. Final disposition of the courts has not yet been made but the Chaudoinitcs will be allowed and are requested to use them until after the holidays when the regular Chaudoin Courts will have been re-constructed and re-fitted. The two new courts together with the old ones will make seven for the University and will give everyone who likes the gam* a chance to indulge. The tournament that is progressing towards the semi-finals has passed off smooth ly. About sixty men were matched and that number has dwindled down to eight or ten at present. The winner will be declared the champion of the school and will make a secure berth on the tennis team. The other members of the team will be chosen by the tennis manager who is engaged at pre in looking the matches over carefully. There are quite a number of I good players in school and Stetson j should be a hot contender in the i intercollegiate matches, both in J singles and doubles. Games are being negotiated with I several of the colleges in this' State and a number of good matches will be pulled off soon. o Miss Priscilla Bishop entertainer] most pleasantly Mondaty night at dinner. Another birthday party was the occasion, and everybody had a regular birthday time. Miss Alice Clark presided over the chafing dishes, and concocted some delicious "eats."
