Stetson University Takes an Active Part in Prohibition Movement
Much Honor Brought to Stetson by Young
Men Representing Her at Gainesville
Frank Wideman Winner of
State Oratorical Contest;
Arthur Milam Elected
President of Intercollegiate
Prohibition Association.
In all intercollegiate activities for
the year 1909 and 1910 Stetson 'lis
shown herself a winner and the latest
victory, the oratorical contest, is the
first intercollegiate work of this kind
Florida has known for some years.
First we won the football championship last fall, then came baseball,
Stetson tying for that championship.
Athletic possibilities were then exhausted, not in (Stetson but in the intercollegiate organization, so we resorted to the literary field and entered the oratorical contest, where
it takes big thinking and big men.
The series of annual intercollegiate
contests to be held in the State of
Florida under the auspices of the Intercollegiate Prohibition Association
was inaugurated in Gainesville on last
Thursday evening. The four best
colleges of the State, Sutherland, Columbia., University of Florida, and
Stetson were ably represented and regarded from an oratorical point of
view, the contest was eminently successful.
The audience was small, only about
150 people in the auditorium, owing
to the many other attractions in
town on that date-
Mr. Roy Sellers, the State president of the association, called the
meeting to order,, and after the invocation by Rev. Wilson of Gainesville,
delivered an appropriate address, welcoming the delegates and thanking
the people of Gainesville and the
University for the hospitality extended to the association. The contest was on and the judges were then
busy men for about an hour and a
half. The decision was awaited with
impatience while the judges were
conferring and' later while Mayor
Matheson was delivering the presentation talk. The applause following
the announcement of the decision
showed that every one agreed heartily with the verdict of the judges.
Stetson should justly feel proud of
this victory, for it means that she
has put forth the best college orator in the (State of Florida. Every
school was represented by her best
and a victory among victors is well
deserving of applause.

The contest for next year will be
held at Columbia University in Lake
City and preparations for this meeting will start early in the fall term.
Mr. Wideman, the winner and representative of all the colleges in the
State of Florida will go to Gettys-,
Pa., to take part in the interstate contest of all the eastern states. Florida
will be ably represented by this Stetson man and there is a good chance
for the victory at Gettysburg to be
awarded to the South instead of to
he North and to a Stetson man rather than to a Union general.
Stetson Reserves vs.. Florida Military
Academy.
Stetson Reserves defeated the F.
M. A. baseball team at Green Cove
/Springs last Saturday by the score
of 11 to 5. Tillis and Calhoun were
the battery for Stetson and both
showed up in great form. The feature of the game was Skinner's base-
running. Carl Blount's coaching on
the side lines also aided greatly in
Stetson's victory.
The Reserves were royally treated
by the F. M. A. boys and President
Geo. W. Hulvey while in Green Cove.
The Reserves next game is with F.
M. A. here, Saturday. The line-up
of the last game for Stetson was:

"So your wife wrants to vote?"
"Not exactly," replied Mr. Meek-
ton. "She wants the opportunity of
voting if she wishes. Then she will
do as she likes about it."
