Another Step Taken To*
ward State Championship by Baseball
Team.
The baseball team from the University of Florida played Stetson the
first game of the series last Friday
afternoon, and it didn't take more
than three innings for the most inattentive observer to discover that the
Stetson baseball players are no gentlemen. Why? For the same reason
that no gentleman would take candy
from a baby. The Stetson boys playing ball with Florida strongly reminds one of Jim Jeffries boxing little Boy Blue. But the games had
been arranged and so they had to be
played- Umpire Bennett announced
that ,Smith would pitch for Stetson
and Davis for Florida. And right
here let it be said that "Smitie"
heaved a beautiful game. He seems
to have overcome his tendency to
wildness and his breakers were of the
best. Neither team scored up to
the fourth inning, but after that the
Stetson boys began stinging the ball
in great shape. In justice to Davis,
Florida's pitcher, it must be said that
the result of the (jrame was not due
to his poor playing. The fact is he
seemed to be about the only real ball
player on the Florida team. He
fields his position beautifully and is
a first class batter. ■ He received
wretched support at all stages of the
game, and no pitcher can win without
help. All the Stetson boys played
jamb up ball. Calhoun had a little
difficulty in handling ground balls
around the short field, but most of
his chances were mean bounders.
Garner caught in an unusually bril
liant manner, and his throwing to
second was the best seen at Stetson
for years. Maybe the coach is not
there with the goods. Blount got
three hits the first three times up.
Hasn't that kid developed some this
year? The final score was 8 to 3,
simply due to the fact that Stetson
has fielders, batters, and pitchers that
are "bound for the big league," as
the coach says.
Second Game.
The second gam*; was played Saturday. Umpire Fountain, formerly
.snort-stop on the University of
Michigan varsity, announced the
/batteries; ,Stetson, Bird and' Garner;
Florida, Miller and Tenney. Bird
has never pitched before for the varsity and much interest was taken in
the showing of this man in the capacity of pitcher. Following is an
account of the game just as it happened.
First Inning.
The first two balls thrown by Bird
were strikes, but the next four went
wild and Bouis walked. Edgerton
sacrificed to the pitcher. Hunter
grounded to the pitcher and was out
at first. Smith took three healthy
swings and the side was out. Runs o;
hits o.
Calhoun was given a free pass to
first. Snediger grounded to the
pitcher who threw wild to first, Calhoun going to third and Snediger to
second. Galloway hit nothing three
times and was out. The squeeze play
was then worked to perfection by Allen's bunt, Calhoun scoring. Jones
fanned. Blount grounded out to the
pitcher. Runs, i; hits, o.
Second Inning.
Eangston struck out- Powers
walked. Davis singled through third,
too hot to handle, Powers going to
second. Tenney fanned. Miller was
hit by a pitched ball and the bases
were full. Powers was caught napping off third by ;\ quick throw Garner to Allen. Runs, o; hits, I.
Garner walked and immediately
pilfered second. Campbell out catch
er to first, Garner taking third. Bird
fanned. Calhoun hit to short who
threw wild and Garner scored, Calhoun going to second. Srfediger
fanned, but the catcher threw wild
to first and Calhoun scored. Snediger then stole second, third, and
scored on a wild pitch. Galloway
walked, but was thrown out trying
to hook second. Runs, 3; hits, 0.
Third Inning.
Bouis went out, second to first. Edgerton ballooned rat to left- Hunter
punched. Runs, c; hits, o.
Allen grounded \o pitcher, but was
safe on a fumble. Jones sacrificed
him to second. Blount popped out to
second. Garner lined out to second.
Runs, 0; hits, 0.
Fourth Inning.
Smith aeroplaiW to center field.
Langston grounded out to second.
Powers out, short to first. Hits, 0;
runs, 0.
Campbell walked. Allen, running
for him, stole second. Bird fanned.
Calhoun grounded to second who
fumbled, Allen ta\ing third. On a
bunt by Snediger both scored. Galloway singled over second, ,Snediger
taking third. Allen popped up to
third and Snediger was doubled.
Runs, 2; hits, 1.
Fifth Inning.
Davis hit a short fly to third. Tenney grounded out to first. Miller
grounded to third and was safe on a
fumble. Bouis singled over second
and was out trying to stretch it into
a two-bagger. Runs, 0; hits, 1.
Jones walked, and was out a mo-
meat later trying to steal second.
Blount flew out to right. Garner
singled over short and stole second.
Campbell hit up a weak infield fly.
Hits, 1; runs, o.
Sixth Inning.
Edgerton walked. Hunter sacrificed him to second- Smith hit safe
