No. 26 History of the Stetson Oratorical Association Splendid Career of Local Organization Stetson's Orators Gain for Her not only State-wide, but a National Reputation The Oratorical Association has made wonderful progress during its short life and promises a prominent place in the future catalogues of Stetson University. A brief history of the association may be of interest to the readers of the Collegiate. In February of last year Prof. Suhrie issued a call meeting of the student body of the University, at which meeting Messrs. Hull, Spencer and Carlton were elected as a committee to draft a constitution. After several conferences with Dean Carson, Prof. ,Suhrie and others, a draft of the constitution was submitted to and adopted by the association. At another call meeting in March of 1909 Mir. Doyle Carleton was elected president of the association. The time until the close of school in May was so short that nothing further was done last year. Soon after school opened last fall the association met and elected new officers as follows. Roy V. Sellers, president; Miss Dorcas Broward, vice president; W. B. Cone, secretary; Claude Jones, treasurer. These officers together with Dean Carson, Prof. Suhrie, Prof. Rosa, Prof. Stover, constitute the executive board. The main purpose of the association is to foster and encourage public speaking in all its phases. During the fall term of 1909 a debating contest in which Miss Boor was the winner of a $10 prize, was given with marked success and a display of excellent talent by all the contestants. On April 15, after some expenditure of time in preparation, an oratorical was given,*the contestants being representatives from each of the literary societies, Mr. Frank Wideman was the successful one in this contest, and was presented with $10 in gold by Dr. Hulley who was presiding officer of the occasion. Then later on, April 28, Mr. Wide- man was the winner of a prize in a contest at Gainesville, consisting of a representative contestant from every college for boys in the State except Rollins. The financial part of the organization so far has been kept up by private donations from Mr. Wood Mr. Conrad, Mr. McBride, E. O. Painter Ptg. Co.,, John B. Sellers, during the recent Intercollegiate Oratorical contest at Gainesville, as Florida's representative to Valpariso, Indiana where there will meet this summer delegates from all over the United States to the national convention of the Intercollegiate Prohibition Association. Announcement of the Stetson Annual by its Publishers. The Stetson Annual is named "The Cracker." After having spent a great deal of time and good nature, (no mention need be made about the spending of money) the Senior classes of the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Law have succeeded in bringing the Cracker to the point where he is now in the bands of the binders. Whether the binders shall be worked overtime rests with the Stetson students—they are judges. Some new ideas have been adopted' in the publication of this book. The cover is in a subdued red of sheepskin with the name and the seal of the University on the outer cover. We wont tell you what is within the cover. Be sure to save your money for The Cracker as he shall be presented to you for payment within the succeeding week— at least he expects to find you willing to take him off some sad Senior's hands. STETSON ANNUAL COM. , Another honor won by ,Stetson University through the Stetson Ora- Senior Academy Picnic. Oh Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Hear Ye! The most wonderful class in the history of ,Stetson University (of course you know that was the Seniors of 1910) had a picnic Saturday morning, May the 7th. The members of this most notorious class gathered at the homes of Misses Hibbard and Stephens, where they awaited the arrival of Cannons' hacks to carry them to De- Leon Springs. The Episcopalians realizing the benefits to be derived from a day's association with such sparkling wit and intellect were awaiting this party upon their arrival at the fountain of youth.
