Literary Society
Holds Open Meeting
Most Excellent Program
Brings Fourth Favorable Comment
The open meeting of the College
literary society was the most successful and interesting meeting of the
society yet held. A hundred and
twenty-five people were present,
crowding the room to its utmost capacity. The members of the Kent
Club, and Stetson Literary Society
attended in a body, and were welcomed by the ac ting chairman, Mr.
Hugh Jones, in gracious words.
Frank Wideman, always fine in his
delivery, and who has the making of
an orator, spoke Henry W. Grady's
speech on the "Home."
Gordan Haynes delivered a mock
oration which was most excellently
done, and was extremely well received.
Then came the debate which on the
whole was good.
Mr. George Coleman, and Miss
Helen Boor took the affirmative of
the question, "Resolved that the government should o^'n and operate the
railroads."
Mr. William Stultz and Miss Wilma Davis were on the negative and
secured the unanimous decision of
the judges. Miss Davis' speech was
especially good, being lucid, logical
and well delivered.
Edwin Spencer, president of the
literary society has never been seen
to as good advantage his very excellent and well prepared oration on
"Conservatism vs. Radicalism."
Miss Ninia Phillips, one of the
representatives of the society in the
young ladies declamatory contest,
was called on extemporaneously for
a recitation. Although unprepared
beforehand her recitation was as good
as Miss Phillips h».s thus far delivered in the society, and that is paying her a very high compliment.
Thus concluded a program absorbingly interesting from the opening to
the close of the meeting.
The open meetings of the Eusophian Literary Society are the most
talked of events in the student lite
of Stetson.
They are looked forward to by the
entire school with expectation, and
thus far the Eusophian has not disappointed an expectation.
Dr. Farriss then announced to the
society a check from Mr. E. B. Solomon for $so and Mr. D. H. Terry
has added $25 in addition to that
amount. These two gentlemen are
friends of the school and of the students, and in thu? giving to the Eusophian to aid them in so worthy an
undertaking as the furnishing of
their room in a manner worthy of all
acceptation, they have again manifested an interest in the school fully
appreciated by the entire student
body.

MEET JOINTLY
Inspiring Services Attend Dedication
of New Hall.
Tn a most interesting and impressive service before a joint meeting
of the Young Men's and Young Women's 'Christian Associations of John
B. Stetson University, the new association hall in the library building
was dedicated last Thursday evening.
It was very gratifying to the leaders
of both of these flourishing institutions to see so many out for the dedication services and such an interest
shown in this important branch of
University work. Miss Wilma Davis, president of the Y. W. C. A.,
spoke of the work and' purpose of the
young women and Mr. Harry Garwood, president ol the Y. M. C. A-,
outlined briefly the growth of this
association in the past few years. The
solo, "Come, My Redeemer," by Miss
Conkling was up to the usual high
character of this popular soprano's
work. Fallowing came the responsive service of dedication by President Hulley, and no comment could
do justice to the <cope and impres-
siveness of this service. Following
