THE COUNTESS OF SANTA EULALIA.
The Guests of Honor of Stetson University.
The great social feature of the University year at Stetson has been the
visit of the Count and Countess of
Santa Eulalia on February 19 to attend the Presentation Day exercises.
They found a warm welcome awaiting them both in DeLand and at the
University.
The Countess is well known here
for her many good works, for her
interest in Stetson University, for her
large gifts in money and endowment
to education. She is wealthy and
gifted, and abounds in good works.
The Count is very popular in the
highest circles of society in Portugal,
and in the foreign diplomatic service
in his country. He is one of the few
who combine the artistic and practical. In art circles he has the reputation of being one of the foremost in
the ranks of sculptors, and in the
diplomatic world he is respected and
esteemed as one of the representatives of Portugal in the United States.
The Count is a remarkable person.
He comes of one of the most distinguished families of Portugal.
One of the marked elements of his
personality is his modesty. Another
is his sincerity, and still another his
simplicity.
Early in life he developed a taste
for the fine arts, especially for sculpture. His father being of an artistic
temperament, indulged his son's
tastes. He was sent to Paris. He
there studied under some of the best
artists for fourteen years. He has
since exhibited a number of times in
the Paris Salon.
He designed and built the Statue
of Liberty in Sofia, the cap.tal of
Bulgaria. For this statue he was dec
orated by the King of Bulgaria, receiving the title of "Officer of Civil
Merit of Bulgaria."
The Count has been decorated a
number of times in Portugal. On his
last visit his numerous titles were
still further augmented, in recognition of the beautiful piece of statuary
representing the present queen which
he recently placed in Lisbon, the
capital of Portugal.
Last summer he was appointed
''High Commissioner to the United
States of America and to Mexico."
Distinguished as the Count's family connections are, and eminent as
he is among the nobility of Portugal,
and efficient as he is in the capacity
of a diplomat, his chief interests are
in his art. He loves art for art's
sake. He has a passion for beauty.
He is full of poetry.
