ROLLINS STETSON FOOTBALL GAME
FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON
Stetson's first football game of
the season was played with Rollins
College at Winter Park Saturday,
November 23, and was a battle
royal between teams very nearly
evenly matched, although Stetson
showed up in a little better form
than Rollins and won the game
after a stubborn contest by the
score of 4 to o. Stetson's score being a brilliant 30yd place kick by
F. Botts.
The Stetson team left in a special
train, together with over 200 supporters, students of Stetson and
enthusiastic people of the town,
and arrived in Winter Park at 2 :i 5.
The game was called at 3 130 with
Mr. L. Mace, of Lake Helen, as
referee and Mr. Hoskins, of Orlando
as umpire. Mr. Del. Mason of
national baseball fame, and Mr.
W. Tilden were timekeepers, The
game was a "fast" from start to
finish, with considerable time out,
on account of Rollins' players being
overcome with heat and dust: the
latter was thick and handicapped
the Stetson players exceedingly.
The Stetson team played excellent ball, every man playing his
position all the time. The "kick
off's" by Fred Botts were long and
high, enabling our men to get down
under them, thus making the returns short. Bedortha, by his fine
kiching, helped Stetson out of several tight places. Stetson's defense was open in the centre of the
field, but a stone wall inside her
30yd line. Considering that this
was Stetson's first game, the tsam
as a whole, played a very strong
p-ame.
A brief summary of the game
follows:
FIRST HALF.
Rollins won the toss and chose to
kick off to Stetson, the ball went
out of bounds and was brought
back and kicked over again. Stetson returned the ball 30 yards and
lost the ball on a fumble. On three
plays Rollins is forced to the front.
The ball rolled behind Stetson goasl
where L. Botts fell on it for a touch
back. Bedortha punted out 45
yards to Rollins. Rollins made
several games but lost the ball on
downs. Bedortha, for Stetson'
made a pretty game of 8 yards, and
F. Botts 2 yards. Again Stetson
lost the ball to Rollins. Rollins
kicked, after two attempts to gain.
Bedortha, Speck Campbell and F.
Botts made substantial gains, but
on the next we lost ball on a loss of
10 yards. Rollins then advanced-
for 30 yards in two downs, but lost
the ball on downs. Stetson advanced the ball by F. Botts and
Pounds, and L. Botts made a
pretty end run of 15 yards. Campbell made 5 yards, Bedortha 3
yards, and Campbell 2 for first
down. On the next play Stetson
bucked 8 yards across Rollins' goal,
but fumbled the ball, a Rollins man
falling on it for a touch back. Stetson soon obtained the ball and F.
Botts advanced it for 6 yards,
Campbell 3, and Mickle 5 more by
a pretty forward pass.
After kicking out of bounds and
making no gain, Stetson tried a
goal from the field and F. Botts
booted the pigskin squarely over
Stetson rooters. Score, 4 to o in
favor of Stetson.
Stetson kicked off 45 yards, and
Rollins returned the ball 10 yards
before being downed. Rollins here
made several substantial gains on
"fake" plays, but finally lost the
ball on downs. Campbell made a
fine gain of 10 yards for first down.
After a slight gain by Pounds, the
ball went over to Rollins and the
whistle blew for the end of the half
with the ball on Rollins' 30 yd line.
SECOND HALF.
Stetson kicked to Rollins, who
lost the ball after an advance 12
yards, and were siioved back for a
loss of 12 by a splendid tackle by
L. Botts. Stetson also was forced
back for a loss and the ball went to
Rollins. Rollins forced her way
up the field but lost the ball on a
fumble.
Mickle was sent through for 5
yards, and Bedortha around for 10.
Stetson was here penalized 5 yards.
F. Botts made 5 yards, and Speck
6 yards. Stetson kicked the ball
out of bounds and the ball went to
Rollins.
Rollins by a fake made a gain of
20 yards, tried another but failed,
gained 10 yards then lost 6 more.
Stetson defense strengthened and
Rollins lost the ball on downs.
Stetson lost 4 yards, then Bedortha
punted for 40 yards. Rollins ball.
Rollins punted, which gave Stetson
the ball again. Stetson lost on
two downs and punted on the third.
