»ET32!r* OFFICIAL STUDENTS' PUBLICATION OF STETSON UNIVERSITY. Vol, xix. DeLand, Fla., Wednesday, April 17, 1907. No. 22 STUDENTS SING THE PINAFORE A Remarkably Fine Crew, Says Critic. It seems to have become the established custom of the Univer sity that, at least once during the school year, a musical event of some kind shail be given. Last year we all enjoyed The Messiah. a beautiful Oratorio. This year, to show the versatility of our Stetson and DeLand musicians, it was decided to present Pinafore, the comic opera With Prof. Orwin A. Morse as director, and a most efficient company, it was given last night at the auditorium. The opera which is a charming little thing, has been popular throughout the country for years, and we felt as though welcoming an old friend in a new and charming guise when Miss Ouscaden, gowned most becomingly in palp yellow, appeared as "Little Buttercup.'' The Gallant Captain of the Pinafore, too, delighted all with his "No never well, hardly ever.'' •Sir Joseph's iron clad conceit sat oddly on our friend, Mr. Carlton ; but he carried out his part we 1 and was even dignified enough for the ''Ruler of the Queen's Navee," while the chorus of his sisters and his cousins and his aunts and the men before the mast made a charmiug background of youth and color. Mr. Cotton as Dick Dead-Eye made good his claim to the title of "a New Star," while Ralph. Rackstraw and Josephine, the Captain's daughter, especially de- SISTKHS | AND ' COUSINS OF I SI K.JOSEPH lighted the entire audience by! their rendition of the song, "Oh Bliss! Though few of the contestants have been doing anything like consistent practice there is evidence of some interesting playing, and all who will attend the matches will surely be repaid for doing so. This afternoon a meeting of all who entered was held at the courts to perfect arrangements for the play. The list of entries reads as follows: W. T. Christy, Pierce, Tilden, Walker, Hamlin, P. Selden, Taylor, Jones, Moffatt, Q Woodward. Blocker, Cotton, ATHLETIC SEER PROBES FUTURE Gives Hints on Next Year's Teams of Stetson. G. Selden, J. L. Christy, Turnquist. Shay. Everybody says that the charm of Mr. Cotron's acting in the Pinafore performance lay in the suitability of his part to him. Now that Stetson has completed another successful year in athletics, players and coaches instinctively begin building teams for the future and wondering who will take the places left va- cant by the departure of the gridiron and diamond heroes. It is nearly always true tfTat the men who leave the teams are the men who will be most surely missed. They are men who have played for a number of years, men around whom teams of previous years have been built. This is true of Stetson. In football we lose such men as Kirby, Wilder, Campbell and Black. No one needs to be told that their places will b^ hard to fill. Each of the^p men would be a severe loss to the team, but when we take them all it seems at first that it would be impossible to make a team without them. The case however, is not as it seems. Kemember that of the teams that in the fall of 1905, won the State championship, Duncan, Frank Pounds, Cox, little Botts and Underhill did not return and yet the team of the past season was one of the strongest that ever represented the school. Let us see what material is at hand. Of last year's team those who will report for practice next fall are Hendricks, center and captain; Waterman and Garwood, guards, F. Botts, tackle, John*
