Wins Tallanassee Game, but Loses to Lake City.--Th.ree Good Games. Our boys did themselves proud on their recent baseball tour to Lake City and Tallahassee. Although handicapped by the loss of several of the best players, our team crossed bats with the University of Florida team, April 8th, and demonstrated to that institution, and all such institutions of the State, that the American game can be played wrU purely amateur men of passing grade, a thing sadly neglected at both our rival schools against whom we played. The first game at Lake City, April 8th, was indeed an exciting one. With Mr. Sears in the box we played them a fast game, and it was not until the last man was out that the contest was decided. Stetson" earned one run by clean hitting, and the University of Florida earned one. The remaining three scores for the University of Florida were given them on errors, the ball being thrown away once by Stetson. Stetson thus handicapped, U. of F. won by a score of 4 to 1. Our boys, with more confidence in themselves than ever, left for Tallahassee and met the Florida State College team April 9th, in the second game of the series. Pelot in the box and Pounds behind the bat soon showed the boys their Waterloo. Pelot struck out seventeen men, demonstrating the fact that he was cut out for a pitcher. Early in the game F. S. C. scored two runs. Finally Stetson scored one. Thus the game ran "nip and tuck" till the last half of the ninth inning. Pounds went to bat and hit to third, and, on an overthrow to first, made second, then stole third. Cook came up next and knocked a ground ball to pitcher and made first while Pounds, the pitcher, catcher and third base man were playing fox and geese between home and third. Finally, however, Pounds, by a desperate slide, was again "safe on third." Now "Speck" was fanning the air with the stick in such a way that Liddell forgot to catch the ball and Pounds shot home like an arrow. In the meantime Cook landed on third. Now, what would happen? Score, 2 to 2, with Cook on third and only one man out. In the twinkle of an eye the end had come. Cook wa,s stealing off third when pitcher Shears fired the balPpast third, letting Cook home. Score 3 to 2 in Stetson's favor. The feature of the game was the excellent pitching on both sides, Sheats for F. S. C. and Pelot for Stetson. The team was given a most delightful reception in the evening and enjoyed meeting many of the charming young ladies of Tallahassee. Truly we voice the sentiment of all the Stetson contingent when we ,say we've always esteemed the F. S. C. boys above those of other schools of the State against whom we've contested, but now the cry is, "Long live the lovely ladies of Tallahassee!" Many a throbbing heart came home longing for a speedy return to the red hills of our capital. Both Stetson and F. S. C. were anxious to play, the tie off on Monday, but the date at Lake City prevented it. So again we met the foe on her own field and with a greater determination. The most exciting game of the season followed. Again Pelot was given the box and pitched excellent ball. Sears had plenty of two- baggers, and succeeded in getting to third just in time to ride home on Pounds' single. Score: Stetson, 1. U. of F., 0. Soon, however, U. of F. scored one, and, a nttle later, is supposed to have scored again; but long will the doubt remain in Stetson's mind as to the validity of the decision of the U. of F. umpire. The saying, "You can't beat U. of F. at Lake City," has become a cry for all those who attempt such a thing. They are to visit us soon, and we hope to beat them, professionals and "flunk ers" thrown in, by a larger score than 2 to 1. McQuiston-McCoy. On Monday, April llth, Mr. Harvey Malcolm MacQuiston and Miss Agnes McCoy were united in the holy bonds of wedlock in San Antonio, Texas. Miss McCoy, of Smethport, Pa., was a student here for several years, and is a graduate of the music department. She is remembered here as an excellent vocalist, and has a host of friends in the city. Mr. MacQuiston is from Chicago. Illinois, and spent several seasons here in Stetson as student and instructor. The young couple left immediately for Southern Texas where the groom has a responsible position. The Collegiate joins with the many friends of the two popular yonng people in wishing them a long and happy wedded life. Pretty Church "Wedding. Thursday at high noon, St. Barnabas Church was the scene of one of the px*ettiest weddings that ever occurred in DeLand. At that time, Miss Ruth Winifred Morris became the wife of Mr. Henry Marsh Burrows, of Rangeley, Maine. The bride was exquisitely gowned in white satin, with trimmings of real lace and pearls, witn large white picture hat, and with het was her sister, Mrs. William Stone Taylor, who was beautifully gowned in lavender and white silk, with hat and gloves to match. The bride's onlj attendants, besides her sister, were Miss Minna Meyer and Miss Maysie Emery, both of Jacksonville, who were gowned alike in white French lawn over white taffeta, with large white picture hats. They carried huge shower boquets of pink bridesmaids roses. Mr. Burrows' best man was Mr. Don Morris, and the groomsmen were Mr. Litchfield Colton, of New York, and Mr. Wilmshurst. The beautiful Episcopal marriage service was impressively read by Dr. Little, of the Ocala Episcopal Church. Following the ceremony the wedding guests were entertained with a most elaborate "Breakfast party, at the home of the bride's sister, Mrs. Taylor, the color scheme being pink and white. Mr. and Mrs. Burrows left on the afternoon train for New York and later they will be at home at the attractive home of Mr. Burrows, "Rangemore," Rangeley, Maine. Judge Parker's celery patch is a thing of beauty now and of course is attracting a good deal of attention — The Judge has accomplished what he had in view when he first began the enterprise, i. e. to demonstrate that this crop could be grown as success- ully as elsewhere in the State. He has-done more than that for he has already shipped a profitable crop of lettuce off the ground and his celery is pronounced to be much above 400 crates to ship from the patch Avhich contains about one half acre of ground. At $2 per crate there's big money in it, but the Judge expects more.—Kissim- mee Valley Gazette. Pearson Nichols has a fine crop of vegetables growing and his grove is in fine condition. He is shipping Tardiff oranges.—Sarasota Times. A New Orange. Louisiana Evolution That Will Stand Zero. (Avoyelles (La.) Bulletin.) The hibridizauon of citrus fruits for a number of years has been a special study of the United States government, as well as the State governments through their experimental stations, together with all the progressive citrus growers of the country. The chief object to be attained was by the hybridization of hardy varieties to perfect an orange which would be able to withstand a very low temperature and at the same time preserve all those qualities essential to a palatable, marketable orange. Some idea of the time consumed in the evolution of such a desirable orange can be estimated from the fact, that from the original fertilization from one flower from the pollen of another variety, the seed thus produced has to be planted and reach fruiting maturity before the result can be determined. At the present time there are hundreds of these crosses now in the experimental stage, probably developing with each succeeding season some new variety of orange. Thus far, however, and until the recent development by J. L. Norman, of the Hillside Nursery, Marksville, La., there has been none that comes as near to reaching the coveted goal as his does. Mr. Norman began his experiments ten years ago, using the citrus trifoliata to infuse hardiness and great freeze-resist- ing power into other varieties. The citrus trifoliata is a Japanese hedge plant. Its fruit is very small and worthless, being virtually a bag of seed with a bitter juice. The trifoliata has been used in Japan almost exclu- srvely by the nurserymen there for for budding other varieties of fruit upon its stock on account of its hardiness. One of the first experiments Mr. Norman made was to hybridize the trifoliata into the satsuma and the plants thus obtained are just now coming into bearing. The satsuma orange is also a Japanese variety. It is unlike the trifoliata in its foliage and its growth. While the trifoliata is a very thorny plant and defoliates in the fall, the satsuma is thornless and dos not defoliate. The satsuma fruit is flat snaped with a glove-like skin, and while the flavor is not so fine as the mandarin, it resembles that fruit in appearance. It also has the advantage of being the next hardiest orange in the world, the trifoliata alone taking the precedence. In making this combination, it would appear that Mr. Norman has at last succeeded in accomplishing the result which others have been so long striving after, as evidenced by specimens which he has sent the Times- Democrat, the first bunch of good oranges reached by the cross. The accompanying illustration gives some idea of their distinctiveness. They measure six and one-half inches in circumference; in color they are of a bright yellow. The skin is very smooth, thin and clean. There are fewer seeds than the ordinary sweet orange, and in flavor it is almost all that could be desired. The tree from which these oranges were taken is said to be very prolific. While the foliage is not that of the satsuma, the trunk and branches have the thorns of trifoliata. Mr. Norman calls his orange "No. 1 Cross-bred." Writing of it Mr. Norman says: "It is the earliest of any of my new creations so far, out of many seedlings. By infusing the hardy trifoliata blood into the semi-tender satsuma, I have obtained varieties that can stand a zero temperature. You will find this orange of good quality, with possibly a little bitter taste, which is, however, almost imperceptible. In size the fruit is intermediate between the parent varieties. It is globular in shape, thin skinned, with few seeds. The tree is thorny and very prolific. The crossing and intercrossing of the orange and the combinations that can be made are very numerous, as numerous as the moves on the chessboard. I am much encouraged Avith the result so far attained within the brief time of ten years that I have been engaged in this fascinating work in the vast field of dnexplored horticulture, but it seems that when one embarks in these interesting experiments he never tires of trying to fathom the unknown—always after the unattainable. It is from the second generatioji of seedlings that I am expecting many sports from the original type. You will notice from the foliage I send you their varied form brought about by artificial means. It seems like a fairy-tale to talk about growing shiny-leaved trees laden with golden fruit along the banks of the great lakes of the North, where the temperature drops lower than zero, but this is by no means an impossibility. Stranger things have have been brought about by artificial means." The above graphic and correct description of a new orange grown here is taken from the Times-Democrat. We have seen and tasted this new production, and as Mr. Norman is not only our friend but connected with this paper, we take an interest and a pride in his success, and gladly reproduce the comments of so intelligent an expert as is on the staff of our city con* temporary.—Pineapple. Cane Cultivation in the Hawaiian Islands. The following from The Louisiana Planter is interesting because of the showing of the different methods used in other parts of the world. In Hawaii, where cane is cultivated by methods so entirely different from our own that they scarcely seem comparable, we yet find many very interesting features, and some from which we can gather valuable suggestions in their relation to our own industry. Cane cultivation in the Hawaiian Islands was the subject of a report of a committee, delivered at the recent session in Honolulu of the Hawaiian Sugar Planter's Association. Elsewhere in this issue we reprint from the Hawaiian Planters' Monthly this report and its references to the use of water in irrigation and especially to the economical advantages of the disc plow, are of great value to us. Reference is made to the fact that ten or twelve years ago there was not a single disc plow in Hawaii, and that they are now being used wherever circumstances permit. We thintf that our sugar planters in Louisiana have been rather slow in taking up the disc plow, which from a dynamic point of view will certainly do a given amount of work with far less expenditure of power than can otherwise be secured. In the matter of cane planting, it will be noticed that the rows vary from 4 feet 6 inches apart up to 6 feet, while the average !s more nearly 5 1-2 feet. It will be understood that in Hawaii the canes are planted in deep furrows, down which the water or irrigation is applied, and the earth is gradually filled in to these deep furrows as the plants progress in their growth. The matter of the stripping, or trashing of sugar canes, as it is generally called in the English tropics, seems to be of doubtful expediency, and neither recommended nor advised against.
