Description
First manufactured in 2012, the Replicator 2 was one of the first consumer machines to offer PLA extrusion through an all-metal hotend for fused filament fabrication 3D printing. This machine was acquired by the duPont-Ball library for the nascent Innovation Lab in 2014 alongside an enclosed Makerbot Replicator 2x. These were the first two printers purchased by the library. It could print objects up to 11"" x 6"" x 6"" - quite a small build envelope - and it lacked many quality-of-life features found on later printers. It didn't even have a heated build plate, relying instead for adhesion on the application of blue painters' tape after every print to give it a grippy texture. At the time of purchase this machine cost $3000 - adjusted for inflation, more than 4x what we pay for a much more capable Prusa MK4 in 2025. This machine was available for use in the library's Innovation Lab from 2014-2021.
