Guest Conductor
Dr* Earl Slocum holds degrees from Albion College and the
University of Michigan. He is professor emeritus at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he served as
director of bands and conductor of the university orchestra for a
period of 33 years. Dr. Slocum served as a member of the Board
of Advisors of the Stetson School of Music for nine years. He was
elected to the American Bandmasters Association in 1941 and
served as their president in 1963. He is one of only six Honorary
Life Members of that distinguished organization. Dr. Slocum
enjoys an international reputation for his band transcriptions. On
December 6, 1988, The Symphonic Wind Ensemble honored Dr.
Slocum by performing a concert of his transcriptions, three of ,
which will be performed on tour with Dr. Slocum conducting.
Faculty Soloists
Lynn Cholka, Assistant Professor of Clarinet, received her
Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in clarinet performance from the
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1983, and her Master of
Music degree, also in clarinet performance, from New Mexico
State University in 1986. She is currently completing
requirements for the Doctor of Music degree in clarinet
performance at Florida State University.
Dr* Jean Rickman, Associate Professor of Flute and Director of
the Community School of Music, received the Bachelor of Music
Education degree from James Madison University, her Master of
Music degree and Doctor of Musical Arts degree in flute
performance from The Ohio State University. Dr. Rickman is
Chairman of the Board of Advisors of the Florida Flute
Association and a member of the National Flute Association.
