Capriccio on the Departure of his Beloved Brother - Bach wrote this piece when
he was 19 years old. In it he is describing the events that took place when his
brother Jacob went to Poland to be an oboist in the army of Charles XII of Sweden.
First, Jacob's friend and family try to persuade him to stay home. Next, everyone is
saddened by the thought of the dangers that might befall him. Then, realizing that
Jacob will not change his mind, they all say good-by. The army marches into town
and Jacob joins the parade. The song of the postilion (the lead horseman) rings
through the air. Throughout his career, some of Bach's best music came in the form
of the fugue. The Fugue based on the postilion's horn call is no exception. This
capriccio is the only programmatic work that Bach ever wrote.
