Kokopeli (1990)
Kokopeli, the flute player, was a great mahu, or legendary hero of the Hopi Indians. He is said to
have led the migrations through the Southwest, the sound of his flute echoing through the great
canyons and cliffs. In this piece 1 have tried to capture some of this sense of spaciousness, and of
the Hopis' deep kinship with this land.

Les folies d'Espagne
Many composers have used the famous sarabande melody called "folia" as the basis for cycles of
variations (Folies d'Espagne). Hans-Peter Schmitz' flute arrangement of this work, originally
conceived for gamba, thoroughly agrees with the flexible scoring and performance practice of the
first half of the eighteenth century.
