SALUTATION '76 by Richard Feasel
Stetson University granted Sabbatical leave to Richard Feasel in
1975 for the purpose of concentrating on composition.
SALUTATION '76 was composed then as a salute to the U.S.
Bicentennial. It was premiered by Geoffrey Gilbert, conducting
the Stetson University Orchestra in February, 1976. It was chosen
by George Trautwein, conductor of the Savannah Symphony, for
their Bicentennial concert in March, 1976. The Savannah reviewer,
Marshall Reed, wrote that "SALUATION proved excellent in
humor, in Bicentennial mood, and well put together. It had a
flaw; it was much too brief." Although the composer had sketched
a slower contrasting section in 1975, it was not scored or incorporated into the first two performances. Now, responding to
Reed's concerns about brevity, the composer has scored and added
this section to the piece, and the completed score will receive its
premiere in this performance.
Out of courtesy to the performers, it is requested that
cameras and recording equipment not be operated during the
performance.
